Using "setup" It Says "Bad Command Or File Name"?
Jul 6, 2006
Every time I try to enter a command line at the D:> using "setup" it says "Bad command or file name". I just want to wipe this drive(C:) clean and start all over. I am doing this on an old 6 gig HD that was Windows 98 upgraded to XP. How can I get this drive wiped so I can reload WIndows all over? Thanks in advance.

I can't seem to run the setup.exe command. I don't know if it had to do with the recent virus that I had. I'm still using Windows XP. What happens is when I try to enter setup.exe in the run menu screen I get a message, "Please go to the control panel and install and configure system components."

I think i may have just made a big mistake, whilst messing around with command promt and researching on websites i wanted a program to run when my comuter started, a website stated to add it to the autoexec.bat file as a 'call' program or in config.sys, so in cmd i entered edit autoexec.bat and a blank edit screen appeared, i did the same with config.sys and another blank screen appeared. It said beneath to open sysedit from start>run, i did and the autoexec.bat file was empty and so was the config.sys file, is this serious or am i jusy being

Recently after a Windows defender update (about 3 days ago) I stopped being able to run file extensions from a Windows XP command prompt. (Coincidental or not I don't know). Before typing 'todo.txt' at a command prompt brought up todo.txt in notepad.exe. Currently if I type todo.txt at a command prompt it will respond with "The system cannot execute the program specified."

I am having odd freezes, mostly with Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer freezes when: I right-click on any file. I try to use the 'Edit' command from the main menu, unless I am in 'My Documents' or at a higher level. I right-click Windows 'Start' button. Can I re-install Windows Explorer? Is it a registry problem?

At work today I was running a program in windows by typing:> clustalw.exe file.txtat the command prompt. On this computer, clustal.exe takes file.txt as an argument, processes it, and exits. I tried doing the same thing on my home computer (also windows XP) and it says:"/file.txt" is not an option.

I reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd.
2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after).
3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.
I have 2 DVD drives and tried both with the same result. I tried a differant Windows XP disk with the same results.
The motherboard has a backup facility which i had backed up previously with XP but not fully and can restore to that point but i want a complete reinstall.
I have formatted and installed windows XP with that disc loads of times without any problems before.
what should i do?

I have gone through the above thread. I have a specific requirement to count the files in a folder and set it's count value to a variable in the batch script. I will then use this value later in the program. e.g. for /f "delims=" %a in ('dir /a-D /B /s "C:codedepotinstallData File DistribProductName" |find /c /v ""') do Set tempVar=%a I am having trouble with the space in the path. I tried using escape with slash '' but didn't help. Can anyone correct my above command and get the count in the tempVar?

I am using Windows XP Professional, service pack 1 is installed. A few days ago the PC would not boot up. I had to reinstall Win XP Pro. All my programs had to be reinstalled because Windows did not acknowledge they were there. All 23 of them work fine. Here's where I ran into a problem. I use a Matrox G200 Quad card with TV Tuner. I downloaded and installed the software for the card and that too is fine. When I download the software for the TV part of the card to work, I double click on the unzipped set up file and it starts working, that gets to the part where it says "Preparing to Install" then it just disappears. It worked before the reinstall of windows. How can i figure it out.

I've got a message popped up that says I need to install XP service pack 3.
I let it install, but it gets stcuk on the following error:
"Setup cannot copy the file wscsvc.dll"
It gives the path for the file as:
c:windowssystem32
I've checked in the path and the file definitely exists.
The message below the error says:
"Ensure that the location specifield below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP System Files'in the drive you specify"
This message does not make much sense to me.
Is there a particular application running that could be stopping access to this file?
I've tried closing down all applications: but still no joy.
What am I doing wrong?

I get this error when i launch a setup file
<<16 Bit Windows Subsystem>> //Title\
<<C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close to terminate the application'>> //Description\
and there is another button 'ignore'
<<>>
i tried both choices and neither of them worked
i think it's a compatibility issue but the problem is that i launched the same setup files b4 and they worked,,i have WINXP Pro SP2 and i think i've had this problem after i installed the SP2,,i right-clicked the setup file and i changed some of the compatibility options and it still doesn't work.

My mainboard is an Asrock AOD790GX/128MI am trying to set up a fresh install of windows XP pro SP3 on a single hard drive.I don’t want the RAID feature just the AHCI.I have set OnChip “SATA Operation Mode” option to AHCI and connected my HD to the SATA1 port and my DVD drive to SATA4 port.I have made a floppy disc with the AHCI driver “AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller- x86 platform” for xp from the included mainboard CD. The only driver present although I don’t need RAID I have booted my computer with my windows XP CD in. Then pressed F6 when prompted. I then put my floppy disc in with the driver on and press "S" I then select "AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller-x86 platform" and press enter.

Two computers running windows xp professional and each computer has 3 different NIC cards. 1 wireless, 1 wired through switch and 1 wired directly. I used the network setup wizard to configure file sharing however neither computer can see the other's shared folders. The only firewall running is the default windows firewall. I suspect it has something to do with the different NIC cards and it is trying to find shared folders using the wireless as opposed to through the LAN.

I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?
