I have been with NTL now Virgin Media for a year, and have used there Sec package for the same amount of time with no problems, within the last two weeks, I had to uninstall and then reinstall PC Guard, I had a problem with the activation page, it was there fault they had a problem, I now can down load it, but at the end of the install it says, unable to load required security drivers [pkt] and then this no. 2146500093.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a brand spanking new HDD into a machine. Used the XP setup disk to format the HDD and ran thru the complete installation. It as too late before I noticed that the boot drive was designated as F instead of C. I thought it had to do with the way the IDE cables or the power plug are sequenced inside, but apparently you cannot change the drive letter for the boot drive. It is not too late to re do the install, but how can I designate HDD as C instead of F.I don't even know why it would do that.Would there be any problems with keeping the boot drive as F instead of C?I am giving this PC to someone since I don't need it, but I have never had the boot drive other than C before.
We had pcguard as the defences provided by blueyonder, our broadband provide,r for about a year and it worked very well. They then announced a new version and when I downloaded it, the windows were too small for the screens behind them and the procedure was unusable. I asked blueyonder for help but ended up with a frozen pc. I managed to restart it myself and then, tried to uninstall the new pcguard but it won't go away. There is a possibility to instal a new version of the pcguard, but it will not install because the former version will not go. The computer has been behaving strangely since. e.g. :
1] Saying it has to configure HP1Z423 for some things like email or internet, which it did not do before.
2] Starting up in something which looks a bit like safe mode screen, but when enter is pressed, it starts up normally.
know how to stop windows messenger from launching when opening Outlook or Express?? (and sometiimes it wants to automatically log in?) don't wish to disable it as i use it. Just want to launch when i want and log in - Using XP Pro

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a malware disguising as an anti-virus software. This thing is pure evil, it simply can't not be gotten rid off. I have tried restoring my system, I have used LavaSoft's Ad-Aware, AVG, SpyHunter and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which has worked the best but still has not eradicated the vermin. I have found the Registry line for this thing but it can not delete and I have full permission on the computer and it is set to permission for everyone. Anytime I try moving or deleting this thing I just get an error message. Worse yet I hooked up my ipod to the computer and now I think the virus is is my Ipod. So will I have to toss out my Ipod because it might infect any thing I hook it up too?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi am tryng to upgrade a machine from 2000 pro to windows xp pro. the pc has a C drive with 23.5 gb free and a D drive with 60.5 mb of free space. when i try to do the upgrade frm the cd it tells me that there is not enough disk space and that i need at least 640 or so mb of free space.
it looks like it is tryng to install it on the D drive. how to get it to use the C drive?
i have went to start properties and customize and advanced and it still dont show up. what does show up is a magnafiing glass that wasnt there b4. it dont let me look up files and folders.

Tried deleting the files, and registry data for it....still didn't work....Finally the machine shut down and now wil not boot up..... The Dell POST screen loads, but then it sticks trying to load Windows.

A few days ago while online several pop-up windows kept coming up and among them Spyware Guard 2008 came up and said there was security threats/alerts. At that point we tried the trail scan, it identified 200 threats and advised to remove the threats.We removed the threats, however since then Spyware Guard continues to pop up and scan during every start up. We havn't purchased this and can't remove from our start up remove. More importantly, since this episode our laptop 99% of the time completly freezes and won't even start

After Installation, however I have been totally unable to get Windows Media Player to open. I downloaded Version 10 of Windows Media Player and installed it but again I was unable to get it to open. I cleared all traces of WMP from registry and turned off system restore and then re installed WMP10. Still would not open and the system will not permit me to use version 9 anymore.

I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I can see the file structure on the drive, but I can't see the files and folders in My Documents for my old profile. How can I access those files adn copy them to the good drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter a huge fiasco with ending with me reformatting my hard drive, I've finally updated windows xp. I upgraded SP1 to SP2 most notably. But after a while, I started noticing something- no sound. All except for the internal beep comming from my computer to replace the nice sounds that would usually come from the computer. After doing windows update a few times I noticed that it was trying to install something called "C-Media Electronics Incorporation - Sound - CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device". Since I still had my motherboard CD, I double clicked on the icon, and tried reinstalling the driver. PS. I noticed after a few web searches, Windows XP seems to have problems with C-media stuff, but I haven't read anything about this problem.

My question is does Windows Media Center come automatically on the XP installation CD or is this something that is separate? I have done the following:
1. disabled it in MSCONFIG
2. checked it in SERVICES.MSC and it is disabled
3. ran highjack this and removed the 04 wmpnscfg.exe from the list
4. Deleted wmpsncfg.exe and the wmpnssci.dll from the cprogram fileswindows media player.
and the thing still is in msconfig startup after i opened and closed Windows Media player,so has anyone been able to totally remove this crap form startup?
I use WMP for everything but dont need all that other crap running i dont even have a network cable connected to my pc.
dose anyone know of a good all in 1 media player i could try instead?
No wonder you need a newer pc to run windows Vista, Microsoft puts so much crap in there programs and OS that even when its disabled or windows says it is ....... it still runs !!

View 11 Replies View Relateda program called "System Guard 2008" has installed itself. It slowed down quite a bit and eventually crashed on me. Now it wont boot up all the way. I turn it on, it will get all the way to the Windows password screen, then once I enter my password and click on the green arrow, I get a warning message that my paginf file is either non existant or too small. Then once I click "OK" on that warning message, the screen blacks out, restarts the boot process, gets to the password screen, and that cycle just continues over and over. Ive tried to boot into safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration

I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this. I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).
Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.
I am getting files appearing in, "My Documents", they take the form of, "WRL----.tmp", I assume they are temp. files but why are they appearing at all, will they be duplicates ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving recently had someone else using my computer for a while, installing various software (like winamp and SubEdit player) it seems windows media player (that's what I use) no longer recognises the usual files as media files like .mp3 .wmv .m3u .avi etc etc so when I click open file and select "media files (all types)" in the file type box it shows nothing, so I have to change it to all files which is irritating. Media player still plays everything fine but this is pretty annoying.
