I am getting files appearing in, "My Documents", they take the form of, "WRL----.tmp", I assume they are temp. files but why are they appearing at all, will they be duplicates ?
View 2 RepliesI am trying to access the My Documents folders form an older hard drive that is no good (something is corrupted within Windows and the machine won't boot). I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I can see the file structure on the drive, but I can't see the files and folders in My Documents for my old profile. How can I access those files adn copy them to the good drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to open a microsoft word doc (or excel) from windows explorer it takes apx. 30 seconds to open ..but if I open the program first , then click on the open icon it comes up instantly.Also movie files from cd take apx 30 seconds to a minute to open even if I have media player already open.This never happened on my old computer ..This new computer is a Gateway purchased in May 2005..I already tried removing unused programs and defragmenting.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI having trouble opening data files such as Word or Lotus 123. They eventually do open but it take forever (probably 20 seconds). Sometimes they open fast but most of the times I have this long delay. Also printing files is a another task that takes a long time. It seems that the printer isn't recoginzed for at least 15 seconds. I am running on a local network using a Linksys router and also am sharing the printer through a computer on the network with a computer that is running Windows 98SE.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout a week and a half or so ago loading media files takes forever. Whenever I click on a MP3 or AVI file it takes about 30 secs before it loads. In the meantime I get a Windows Explorer has stopped responding dialog and I can either shut it down or wait for it to load.
I've run Spybot, Adaware, and installed ZoneAlarm. I keep getting a message that my computer is trying to access another comp on my network.
I've also tried restoring to an older restore point with no luck.
know how to stop windows messenger from launching when opening Outlook or Express?? (and sometiimes it wants to automatically log in?) don't wish to disable it as i use it. Just want to launch when i want and log in - Using XP Pro
View 14 Replies View Relatedi am tryng to upgrade a machine from 2000 pro to windows xp pro. the pc has a C drive with 23.5 gb free and a D drive with 60.5 mb of free space. when i try to do the upgrade frm the cd it tells me that there is not enough disk space and that i need at least 640 or so mb of free space.
it looks like it is tryng to install it on the D drive. how to get it to use the C drive?
i have went to start properties and customize and advanced and it still dont show up. what does show up is a magnafiing glass that wasnt there b4. it dont let me look up files and folders.
View 5 Replies View RelatedCurrently using XP Pro, SP2 with P4 3.2, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD (90% free). While using explorer to open a folder and display the files in it, the illustrator (ai) files (hundreds of it in one folder) were shown with the generic/windows system icons first and gradually been transform to the Illustrator files icon. The process took so long and made a system in hold/freeze. It happens as well when tried open files using File Open in Adobe Illustrator or Design in the very same folder and files. I've tried solve it using Display Appearance Effect as well as using regedit to modify the value on Max Cached Icons in registry but didn't work.
View 18 Replies View RelatedI bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 about a year ago. It runs Windows XP Home. I don't remember all of my specs (I'm at work), but here is my problem.
First, booting up takes a long...time. When I finally log in, I get an error message: HP AiO Device Object failed: hRes = 0x800706BAThe RPC Server is unavailable.Maximum retry attempts exceeded.I click ok and it brings up my desktop, but originally would not bring up my Start button and taskbar. After messing with it all day yesterday, I finally got a taskbar, but not my usual one. I can open some programs, but can't save any files to floppy or CD. Everything is very slow...and I do mean very! Most of the time the Task Manager will show "Not Responding", sometimes it will eventually start running again and sometimes I just have to "End Process".
I have been with NTL now Virgin Media for a year, and have used there Sec package for the same amount of time with no problems, within the last two weeks, I had to uninstall and then reinstall PC Guard, I had a problem with the activation page, it was there fault they had a problem, I now can down load it, but at the end of the install it says, unable to load required security drivers [pkt] and then this no. 2146500093.

It will however load if I am already in the program which usually opens it. Beside them it says SIG file, which I have no idea what that means. Also, it is just a blank box beside the file name (in my documents list) when usually there is a mini icon showing which program will work to open it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo today I was cleaning out my computer, deleting and moving around old and useless files and documents, etc. I have one folder that contained a plethora of important documents for work (mostly WordPad .rtf documents that I spent countless hours composing). I have another folder, under the same name, in a different part of my computer, with old, useless stuff in it. When I attempted to delete this file, I accidentally right-clicked on the important file, and hit 'delete.Now, a huge amount of hugely important WordPad documents are gone. I checked my Recycle Bin, and nothing was there (on my computer, deleted files oddly usually dont go to the Recycle Bin). I then looked to see if I had stored backups of anything, and I had backup copies of a grand total of 3 of my documents (leaving easily 100 still gone). I then did the only thing I could think of that could possibly restore my lost files: I did a System Restore (I restored my computer to a checkpoint made at about 8 PM yesterday). They were still not there.

The person outsourced told them to do another install of Windows to get in so they can back up their files. They tell him to install to Windows1 instead of Windows. I guess the smart outsourced agent thought this wouldn't delete any files since my friend told him he has some very important documents on this hard drive. So he installs another Windows and guess what, his documents and settings get overwritten. Looks like these guys really know what they're talking about since any Microsoft person should know this happens no matter where you install Windows

We bought it from best buy, and i guess they registered the computer to a 'valued customer' and its really annoying. Idk how the user name stuff works, but i think a while ago(not 100% positive cuz it was like 2 years ago) when we first got the computer i changed the admin 'valued customer' name to my name. but the 'my documents' folder defaulted to 'c:/documents and settings/valued customer' still. i fixed it by making a folder on c: with my name and made that folder the target location for the My Documents folder.

Since then I have installed a few applications on a different partition, but it is not uncommon for applications to put something in the program files folder anyway Is there a safe and easy way of having "my documents" and or "program files" on a bigger partition? Or would that defeat the whole point of a system partition?
