Fresh Installed On Virgin HDD As F Drive
Jan 4, 2007
I installed a brand spanking new HDD into a machine. Used the XP setup disk to format the HDD and ran thru the complete installation. It as too late before I noticed that the boot drive was designated as F instead of C. I thought it had to do with the way the IDE cables or the power plug are sequenced inside, but apparently you cannot change the drive letter for the boot drive. It is not too late to re do the install, but how can I designate HDD as C instead of F.I don't even know why it would do that.Would there be any problems with keeping the boot drive as F instead of C?I am giving this PC to someone since I don't need it, but I have never had the boot drive other than C before.

Regularly played games are running slower than usual, have had one crash from, apparently, being too stressful on the machine (CTD).Sometimes it holds steady and plays well enough... Battlefield 2 is where I notice the significant performance loss and where I benchmark my machine.Think I am missing a driver? Can I find out what driver I am missing? Device Manager doesn't show anything to the contrary. I've installed drivers from the MSI site(4in1 setup), ati/amd drivers for video card, netgear lan drivers.

I recently got my computer back from the computer fixing guy (because I killed the master boot record and I had no idea how to fix it) and it's a lot slower than it was before. It was a clean install of XP, and the only difference I can see is that the computer magician installed PC-cillin on it. It's not any specific program that's slow now either. Firefox, IE, Unreal Tournament, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Civilization 4, all the stuff I usually use is equally slow

OK, I just finished building my PC, but I can't figure out how to install XP (don't stop reading, it isn't that easy).I get XP Pro SP2 through the Microsoft Campus Agreement for free, since I'm a full time student, it's legit.Problem is, they can only provide it as a self extracting executable.I can't get it on a bootable cd.I want to do a clean install, without installing a previous version of windows and then installing XP pro on top.

Doing a fresh install of xp on a sata drive. When it asks to press F6 to install the third party drivers will I be able to load off the motherboard driver cd, or does it *have* to be a floppy.? Reason is the folder that contains the driver info on the cd is over 6mb so obviously won't fit on a floppy..and I'm not sure which I need to complete the install. If I habe the driver cd in the second cd drive will I be able to browse to it when asked? Failing that, just what info do I need to put on a floppy?

Well i tried to install windows on a used 80gig hd. It ended up hanging at the Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration. So i searched around a bit and it said my hd needed to be repartitioned so i said instead of that id go out and buy a new 500gig that was only 80 dollars. So i put the hd in and tried with this and it still hangs at teh same screen. For some reason i cannot get passed the "Setup is inspecting your computers hardwear configuration" screen. I then put in another CD of windows but the 64 bit version to try that one to see if it were the CD that were bad. And it went straight into the setup but then did not recognize my harddrive was there.

Have installed new hard drive, a 500GB Samsung Spinpoint, slipped in my XP disk - and windows setup says this:Windows XP Professional Setup.Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3Could it be that Windows Setup is not seeing the HDD because it is SATA, may need specific drivers or similar? Vaguely remember this happening the last time i installed the OS on this system, but this was years ago. It appears in the Bios on bootup, so the machine itself is counts it as present.Running an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ on a DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B motherboard, with 1GB of RAM.

My hard drive recently crashed and I reinstalled windows xp, the copy i brought with the product key turns out to me fake or blacklisted by Microsoft, the problem is i scanned the disc used for installation and it contain more than a few adware programs and viruses. My PC is operating noticeably slower than before the crash, I scanned my RAM with MemTest. There is also a couple adware programs that comes up in processes, only bitdefender blocks it from popping up when using the internet. Also my Primary IDE channel is using PIO Mode instead of DMA, ive heard this can be because of viruses, should I reinstall windows?Could this mean the windows has been modified and what should i do?

I'm trying to install xp home on my bros comp. he used to have win 2000 pro. I backed everything up and formatted the hard drive. (75 gig ntfs). This worked great. I pulled his hard drive out and put it in my comp (secondary) I then installed xp on it. This went fine, I was even able to boot all the way to xp. The problem comes in when I tried to move the hard drive back to his comp. I could not boot past the compaq screen. I got the error message
"couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
"ntldr: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

I've installed the new drive, formatted it two partitions, and installed my XP on the new drive. The old drive is still installed, and I can select which drive I am booting off of. Boot off the old drive, I'm on my old PC. Boot off the new one, I'm on the new.Only one of the XPs are active at a time. The other says it must be activated.
So, at this point, I boot to the old, and (with this OS activated)run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. I specify that I am saving the data on one of the drives in the PC. It runs and says it's successful. Then I boot off the new drive and (now with THIS OS activated) when I point the FAST to the directory where I saved the files, the wizard says there's no files there to load. I can see .dat files in the directory, but the wizard can't.

I forgot to unplug my zip drive when replacing my fried hard drive, so the installation of the system OS was assigned "E drive".I had already partitioned it, and was able to install another version of XP on the other partition, thinking I could just delete the first one, but it didn't work. I can't install or uninstall anything because all the installation programs are looking for C to be the system partition, which it's not. If I can wipe out everything (no data to lose), and start over, it'd be easier, but I can't uninstall XP for the same reason. Any suggestions? I've already spent hours trying to find a solution, and it may be cheaper to buy another new hard drive.

I recently installed a new hard drive into a friends computer and installed XP Home.
I ran all the updates and service packs.
I left later that day and let him install all his applications.
I got a call tonight from him saying he really screwed up and doesn't know what to do.
I had to follow his thinking over the phone so I hope I get this all correct.
He had trouble loading the drivers for his HP printer. He would get an error saying that a C: empHP_WebRelease folder was missing. He did manage to figure out that for some reason when I installed XP it called the Boot drive "I" instead of "C"

Not sure what is going on here, but my XP system is finding a 3rd drive which is a 'AXV CD/DVD-ROM ScSi Cdrom device'. The only thing I can figure is it has to do something with the zip drive.I have a cd burner and dvd burner also, both of which are detected and work correctly.I have tried to uninstall it but it keeps coming back. What could be causing this? My system suddenly just reboots when playing games now also. I have run spyware, antivirus and hijackthis to find something and nothing comes up. I'm thinking the sudden reboot is related.

Hope this all makes sense... To cut a long story short, i have ended up with 2 versions of XP on the same partition of my hard drive. I know this is always a bad idea but it wasn't me who did it! The person who installed both also partitoned my hard drive into two sections, 40gb and 20gb....so i now have XP pro and XP Home installed on the same partition. Anyway i used partition magic to merge the 2 sections together as it was confusing issues.
Basically- What i want to do is start fresh with one working version of Windows XP Pro on my computer. I've tried inserting the XP Pro CD and telling it to install a fresh copy, overwriting all other versions of windows- but it has only overwritten XP Home and i'm left with 2 versions of XP Pro, and my computer asks me which one i want to start on start-up. So how should i go about removing one of the versions? Would formatting my C-Drive do the trick, followed by installing XP Pro from the CD again?

In addition to my other posting here, I want to ask you professionals, if it is possible to mirror my existing hard drive onto a much larger hard drive? My partition C became way too small over the years, the Windows XP files have blown up their size. Partition D (which contains all installed programs) is still fine. But I was never able to use software like "Partition Magic" to adjust the space between these two partitions. So I might just have to buy a new hard drive. But I want - I even HAVE - to keep the installed XP the way it is now. Lots of software installed. So I wonder, if there is any way just to "mirror" the existing version of XP onto a new hard drive, and then just to exchange the old hard drive with the new one?

I have a 2nd hard drive installed on my computer and i noticed yesterday that everything on it except for one folder has been deleted everything from my music to my videos. However, when i check the properties of the hard drive it still shows that space is being taken up on that 2nd hard drive as if all my files are still there. I went into my itunes and tried to play the music i have on my 2nd hard drive through itunes and to my surprise it still plays which it shouldn't if the files had in fact been deleted.

I recently reinstalled XP Pro and my HDD drive letters are all screwed up. I hear you can remap the drives within Windows, but I'm not sure how. Is it possible? If not I'll just reinstall and unplug my storage drive and that'll solve the problem. System in question is in my signature.
