Reports Hard Drive Size Incorrectly
Aug 14, 2005I Have just installed a Maxtor SATA 200 GB hard drive in my computer.Partition Magic reads this drive at slightly over 200 GB, but WindowsXP reports it as 193GB. What gives?

Upgrade Advisor Incorrectly Reports Easy / CD Creator 5 As Not Compatible
May 5, 2006i needed to reformat win xp home and i cannot install Roxio because the upgrade advisor is incorrectly reporting incompatibility. (i am at win xp sp2) I did thisds before and it reinstalled nicely a copla years ago Microsft recognizes it they had a page on it in Help and Support (i put in Roxio Creator 5.1 Basic. it told me to try a couple things but to no avail and the workaround says ignore it..IGNORE? HOW?It can't be ignored cause it won't let me install. this is the disc that came with the puter (Dell Dimension 8100) a few years ago. would anybody have any ideas of how to install Roxio (i cannot afford to buy any new software right now and using WMP 10 is just not as comfortable Roxio is easy and it also writes text so the name of each tune that have bought and burned to a CD-R that I play shows up on my car CD player.

Apr 8, 2007I'm not sure this belongs in this section so if its out of place, plz move it.Ok, I just bought a HITACHI HDT725032VLA360 320GB HDD. My OS is currently installed on my 80GB WD800JB. I was thinking of reinstalling windows on the HITACHI but I'm unsure of how to partition it to ensure my performance is as good as possible. So what are your recommendations for the partition size for the OS on the HITACHI ?

Jul 17, 2009I will be creating a partition on the second Hdd for the pagefile.I have 2 Gig of Ram installed.My question is what size should the partition be? Less than than 8 Gigs I am aware of.But more importantly, what Min and Max should the settings be for the PagFile. Perhaps let the system decide?If I do set a PagFile on the OS partition I am considering 2MB - 200Mb to generate a kernel dump report. Note: Although I will have an Image of OS If the issue at hand is small enough I amy gain some experience in trying to fix it using the reports.

As for the win2000 i changed the registry for 48 bit LBA support in order to see my 320gb drive. The reason why I ask is because I'm planning to purchase a 750gb or 1tb external hard drive to backup my system. Dec 10, 2007New HDD-Disk Managment -Drive size is displayed as less?Evening Guys, Just after a bit of help from you.Just been out and purchased a 250GB PATA HHD to use as a slave.Fitted the new drive as normal and booted the PC.Located the drive in Disk Management, Right clicked the DISK 0 which was the new unallocated drive, and clicked initialize, The drive is showing as 31.49GB Unallocated, As the drive has not been formatted as yet i thought this would be the reason why, Right clicked the 31.49GB Unallocated, selected new partition and the "wizard" will only allow a maximum of 31GB drive partition.As this is a 250 gb drive, i need this to be larger, ideally 250 GB before format.Please can you advise how i go about formatting the drive and increasing the size?

Oct 6, 2010My problem in a nutshell. I'm trying to install XP as a repair but it isn't going well. I've done it before and I'm quite familiar with the steps, but this time there is one new wrinkle. Windows tells me it sees two partitions, which it shouldn't. There is only one, but it is comprised of two HDD's in a stripe setup. There is a total of 1.2TB of space between the two of them. The free space is somewhere in the 800-900 GB range before the machine started having problems. Windows keeps saying that there is only 900 MB of free space, which is not enough to install windows. Laughable. There is a ton of free space on those drives, and there is an existing XP installation, albiet one that doesn't work.

Jul 17, 2005I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....
Cant Copy Files From Internal Hard Drive To External Hard Drive Using Linux
Mar 5, 2010I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

Aug 5, 2010My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

May 8, 2010I installed XP on my new Acer Aspire Revo 3600 (Managed to finally get HDMI sound working okay, etc, etc, but that's another story.It came pre-installed with a Linux distribution, which didn't even get past the boot screen, and up until recently the wireless keyboard supplied was working fine (plug and play I'm assuming).Then starting yesterday whenever I pressed any given key on the keyboard, it would come up with another character (not the one I pressed). Note that some keys are still mapped correctly, but for example the "I" key will come up as if I pressed "7", and "P" will end up with "9", etc. It's as if it thinks the right had side of my alphabetical QWERTY keys are the number pad.Note that this same issue also first happened in the Linpus Linux command prompt when I first received my Revo, but that didn't matter because I put XP on since.

Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Sep 28, 2006As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.
Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".
Reports USB Hub Error, But No Hub Attached
Aug 8, 2005Today I've been receiving a Windows error warning of a power surge on the USB hub. This warning continues to pop up (and block document windows) even after removing all USB devices. If I click on the error, I get a dialog box reporting that one USB device is drawing too much power through the hub, and it lists 5 USB ports with one highlighted as the problem device. It instructs me to remove the device and click the Reset button.I have three problems with this error. First, from the dialog box there's little way for me to determine which physical USB port is the problem, so I have to unplug all devices. Second, doing as instructed (disconnecting the devices and clicking Reset) doesn't clear up the problem, as I immediately get another warning.

Dec 10, 2006DVD-R+RW rom will not burn. I was in MS search, and it came up with this: mfc42.dll is incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted. I entered mfc42.dll in the search in MS search and it showed at least 12 mfc42.dll items. They all look pretty important. There was one that was windows folder. This is way over my head, does anyone know exactly what this pertains too and how on earth it is connected to my DVD not working? What will happen if I do delete it? Or should I?
