I need to expand the size of the boot drive on my laptop. Once upon a time I had Partition Magic, but it seems to have vanished, and nobody sells it any more. One site supposedly offers it as shareware, but all you get is a demo that does not actually execute the expansion.

I'm sure some of you have noticed that in Windows Explorer, whenever you click a folder in the left pane, it automatically expands to show all subfolders. If you find this annoying, follow these steps...1) close Windows Explorer if it's running2) go Start -> Run, then type "regedit"3) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced4) Change the value of "FriendlyTree" to 05) close regedit, and start up Windows Explorer. View 9 Replies View RelatedUsing WinXP Home Sp2. On my start bar I have lots of folders listed, and as a result, Win shrinks the start bar down to my recently used folders. This is really annoying because I always have to click the expanding buttons at the bottom of the start menu - see bellow. Is there anyway to have the start menu contsantly expanded by default so I don't have to keep manually expanding it?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have 160GB hard disk in which I have Windows XP installed in C drive(25GB). My E: drive is another primary partition(35GB). Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. How can I expand C: drive? I have partition magic installed on my PC.

I was just installing XP on a 10 GB hard drive. When I was installing it it told me all other data etc would be los I said ok etc. After the install I see the C drive is almost full at 7.93 GB. There wasn't much out there for this particular combination.First, equipment. I've got a Toshiba Satellite M55 with a 75 GB HD. I'm installing HP Home. I have no floppy drive. I'm also using a 250 GB USB external hard drive for backups and such. Partitions: What size for each? I was thinking I'd have one for DOS, one for XP and applications, and one for data, although I'm planning to store most of my non-essential data on the external. Is it beneficial to also have a separate partition for the swap file? I read a recommendation in another thread for a 30 GB volume for XP/apps and a 2 GB volume for the swap file with the rest allocated for data, but I didn't find any recommendations for MS-DOS volume size.

Less than than 8 Gigs I am aware of.But more importantly, what Min and Max should the settings be for the PagFile. Perhaps let the system decide?If I do set a PagFile on the OS partition I am considering 2MB - 200Mb to generate a kernel dump report. Note: Although I will have an Image of OS If the issue at hand is small enough I amy gain some experience in trying to fix it using the reports.

As for the win2000 i changed the registry for 48 bit LBA support in order to see my 320gb drive. The reason why I ask is because I'm planning to purchase a 750gb or 1tb external hard drive to backup my system. I don't want to purchase it to find that the system can only see 500gb or something like that. I'm gonna post this same post in the winMe area.

I ran all the updates and service packs.
I left later that day and let him install all his applications.
I got a call tonight from him saying he really screwed up and doesn't know what to do.
I had to follow his thinking over the phone so I hope I get this all correct.
He had trouble loading the drivers for his HP printer. He would get an error saying that a C: empHP_WebRelease folder was missing. He did manage to figure out that for some reason when I installed XP it called the Boot drive "I" instead of "C"
I copied a large directory to a backup drive, preparing to replace the HD on which the directory currently exists.After copying, the "size" of source and target both match:7.14 GB (7,673,318,222 bytes). The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match.On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Should I be concerned that the copy was not completed correctly?
View 8 Replies View RelatedNew HDD-Disk Managment -Drive size is displayed as less?Evening Guys, Just after a bit of help from you.Just been out and purchased a 250GB PATA HHD to use as a slave.Fitted the new drive as normal and booted the PC.Located the drive in Disk Management, Right clicked the DISK 0 which was the new unallocated drive, and clicked initialize, The drive is showing as 31.49GB Unallocated, As the drive has not been formatted as yet i thought this would be the reason why, Right clicked the 31.49GB Unallocated, selected new partition and the "wizard" will only allow a maximum of 31GB drive partition.As this is a 250 gb drive, i need this to be larger, ideally 250 GB before format.Please can you advise how i go about formatting the drive and increasing the size?
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy problem in a nutshell. I'm trying to install XP as a repair but it isn't going well. I've done it before and I'm quite familiar with the steps, but this time there is one new wrinkle. Windows tells me it sees two partitions, which it shouldn't. There is only one, but it is comprised of two HDD's in a stripe setup. There is a total of 1.2TB of space between the two of them. The free space is somewhere in the 800-900 GB range before the machine started having problems. Windows keeps saying that there is only 900 MB of free space, which is not enough to install windows. Laughable. There is a ton of free space on those drives, and there is an existing XP installation, albiet one that doesn't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an old HD From a system that I got rid of. I want to put it into a friends system to see if I can retrieve the files off of it and put it onto my external HD. The hard drive was the boot disk and the computer I am installing it on has it's own boot disk. If I boot up with two boot disks will there be a problem? Is there anything I need to take into account before doing this? I am planning on installing the old HD onto an ATA cable that I unplugged from the DVD drive. The HD that is in this system is not on an ATA cable, I'm not sure what it is connected to, just a small plug with a blue cable going to the mother board.

The panel has no controls for vertical/horizontal size and whatever monitor is used, an OS desktop fills the screen by default. I can resize the window for the TV viewing program in the normal way,just filling my projection screen, but the XP desktop is far too large.Does anyone know of a way to change the physical size of the desktop (including the taskbar) so that it sits in the LCD screen with a blank border all around, or maybe even make it custom resizeable as in a program window ( without changing the resolution)?

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Windows XP Professional OS on an Intel Pentium 4 PC with 512 MB RAM. Presently I have a single disk drive of 40 MB which has been divided into three logical drives C, D and E with total sizes of 20, 10 and 10 MB respectively.
I now want to add a second disk of 80 MB capacity and would like to increase the total size of the three existing logical drives to 40 MB each.Is there a feature available in Windows XP that will permit me to do this without having to reformat the existing 40 MB disk drive ?I have certain software installed in the PC for which the setup files are not available. Reformatting the existing disk drive will result in the loss of these applications. I would also not like to add more logical drives i.e. F, G, H etc.
I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.
