I have a 5-year old Compaq laptop now running XP SP3. As sold it came with 256MB RAM, but I had it upgraded to 512MB at the time of purchase.I have recently upgraded it to 1GB RAM, replacing all the existing RAM with 2 x Kingtson 512MB chips. At the same time I changed the SP pagefile setting from 'custom' to 'system managed', and when rebooted the system created a larger page file.Sadly I have seen little if any improvement in boot or loading speed, nor does there seem to have been any reduction in the amount of disk paging which seems to go on in the background while the screen hangs. How can I determine the best settings for the pagefile please? I've read the MS knowledge base etc, but I'm really no clearer as to what to do - and a query to MS "support" merely pointed me back to the knowledge base.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I was told to increase my pagefile size to 1.5GB because I was having problems with the game Sacred locking up whenever I exported a character from bronze to silver mode. How do I do this???? I have never changed this before and if I do change it what effect will it have on my computer????

I was just browsing through my C drive trying to clear some space andcame across two rather large files whose function I do not know. Theyare Pagefile.sys & hiberfil.sys, both located in C and togethertake up over a gig. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me whatthey do, and if they are suppose to be that large? Also, is it safe to delete them to clear some space?

I have 2 computers that i need to know what is the max hard drive size. One computer is running winME and the other is running Win2000. As for the win2000 i changed the registry for 48 bit LBA support in order to see my 320gb drive. The reason why I ask is because I'm planning to purchase a 750gb or 1tb external hard drive to backup my system. I don't want to purchase it to find that the system can only see 500gb or something like that. I'm gonna post this same post in the winMe area.

When "exploring" drive E: I see pagefile.sys at 1532 Mb. but drive C: has no pagefile.sys. I've tried setting up the pagefile several times on drive C: but still don't see anything. I've read that I may need to do brain surgery on the registry to set up my pagefiler on C: but I'm kinda nervous about that.

I recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Ran many different anti virus and spyware software and they did not detect anything.

Well now, when I go to reinstall, it will not automatically start so I clicked on my computer and dvd-rw Drive (E and there are no files, in fact it states that my my file system is CDFS and the CDA Default - Full It says all space used 672 MB and Free Space 0 Bytes

A friend of mine purchased an HP A1528x-b bundle a few months back. It has XP Media Center I believe. Anyway, it recently started getting an Low Disk Space warning (only 32mb free) for the D: Recovery Drive. I figured he had downloaded something/moved a file into it or something was logging to it. But it wouldn't even let me access the D: drive partition. I did the online chat with HP and it was full of bogus, straight from the manual answers.

I just checked my running processes and I have three of them that are higher than they should be. I've defragged, I've checked for spybots and to see if I have any virus and everything checks out all right. I'm worried that these are so high and I wonder if there is some sort of software or something I can do to bring them back to normal. Here are the three:ashServ.exe 4,372 KB csrss.exe 3,044 KB smss.exe 464 KB

Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?

I have a problem that give me headache. my hardisk is running out of space. it's capacity is about 19 GB and i think that enough for my Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 PC. While recking my brain toward the problem, i notice that the Windows foler in C: is too big, about 6.4 GB.! It's that reasonable, it's it? Uninstalling some programs is not my choice as i need all the program for my work. It's something can I do? of course i have done disk cleanup.

Computer is running slow. The main systems files disk (C: drive) only has 8% remaining disk space. I ran a few diagnostic programs that stated the lack of disk space is slowing down my system considerably. I have another partition (F: drive) that has 50% space,Is there a way I can re-allocate that partition back into the C drive to allow my computer to function better

I'm running Windows XP sp2. Problem is, my C drive fills up. I have removed all but the latest restore point, reduced the max amount of restore point storage to 5%, and removed all of the programs that I don't use very often, moved all of my files to the D drive, clean the cache and remove cookies regularly, and use disk cleanup a lot. After all of this, I only have 1.25GB left in C drive. Not even enough space left to defrag the drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Before long I won't have ANY programs left. I don't use a TV card or anything like that, although I do have the capability to record but never use it.

I have 160GB hard disk in which I have Windows XP installed in C drive(25GB). My E: drive is another primary partition(35GB). Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. How can I expand C: drive? I have partition magic installed on my PC.

I tried to increase the size of my C drive by deleting the D drive partition. The D drive was deleted but the C drive size appears the same. How can I now increase the size of the C drive to fully occupy the space that the D drive previously took up. I would like to end up with one large C drive and no partition.

I was thinking of reinstalling windows on the HITACHI but I'm unsure of how to partition it to ensure my performance is as good as possible. So what are your recommendations for the partition size for the OS on the HITACHI ?

I need to expand the size of the boot drive on my laptop. Once upon a time I had Partition Magic, but it seems to have vanished, and nobody sells it any more. One site supposedly offers it as shareware, but all you get is a demo that does not actually execute the expansion.

I will be creating a partition on the second Hdd for the pagefile.I have 2 Gig of Ram installed. My question is what size should the partition be? Less than than 8 Gigs I am aware of.But more importantly, what Min and Max should the settings be for the PagFile. Perhaps let the system decide? If I do set a PagFile on the OS partition I am considering 2MB - 200Mb to generate a kernel dump report. Note: Although I will have an Image of OS If the issue at hand is small enough I amy gain some experience in trying to fix it using the reports.
