Running Out Of Space System Folder Too Big
Dec 27, 2005
I have a problem that give me headache. my hardisk is running out of space. it's capacity is about 19 GB and i think that enough for my Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 PC. While recking my brain toward the problem, i notice that the Windows foler in C: is too big, about 6.4 GB.! It's that reasonable, it's it? Uninstalling some programs is not my choice as i need all the program for my work. It's something can I do? of course i have done disk cleanup.

A friend of mine purchased an HP A1528x-b bundle a few months back. It has XP Media Center I believe. Anyway, it recently started getting an Low Disk Space warning (only 32mb free) for the D: Recovery Drive. I figured he had downloaded something/moved a file into it or something was logging to it. But it wouldn't even let me access the D: drive partition. I did the online chat with HP and it was full of bogus, straight from the manual answers.

I just checked my running processes and I have three of them that are higher than they should be. I've defragged, I've checked for spybots and to see if I have any virus and everything checks out all right. I'm worried that these are so high and I wonder if there is some sort of software or something I can do to bring them back to normal. Here are the three:ashServ.exe 4,372 KB csrss.exe 3,044 KB smss.exe 464 KB

Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?

Computer is running slow. The main systems files disk (C: drive) only has 8% remaining disk space. I ran a few diagnostic programs that stated the lack of disk space is slowing down my system considerably. I have another partition (F: drive) that has 50% space,Is there a way I can re-allocate that partition back into the C drive to allow my computer to function better

I run Windows XP Professional. I have an 80 GB hard drive with only 3.04 GB of free space. That's 4% of free space, and Disk Defragmenter requires at least 15% to run effectively. Needless to say, when I try to run that utility I don't get much bang for the buck. The Windows file on the hard drive consumes a whopping, eye-popping 67.7 GB (size on disk: 62.3 GB) and contains 32,209 files in 1,807 folders. I've tried to clean up the temporary files. I've run the system's "Disk Cleanup" utility, including all hidden files and folder in the search, until I'm blue in the face.
I've deleted so much stuff, I hope I haven't deleted anything important. Beyond that, I don't know what to do. I recently purchased and installed an additional hard drive for storage purposes, but all of the system programs run off of the one that is nearly out of space and I get frequent computer prompts about low space. What can I do? The 80GB drive badly needs defragmenting -- we're talking so much red that it looks like the Communist flag -- yet I cannot do anything about it. How can I retake this drive from whatever there is in Windows that has just about totally claimed it?

Really strange problem. Windows XP reports that I'm low on disk space. And if I open My Computer, right-click on the hard disk and go to Properties, it shows ~26GB of Used Space and ~4GB of Free Space. However, I do not understand what is taking up so much space. It is a new PC with very little data.Furthermore, if I 'Select All' on the contents of C:, and right-click for the properties of all files and folders, the Size on Disk only equals 11.6 GB, which seems more reasonable. (FYI, I have already set 'show hidden files and directories' in Folder Options)

I have a USB external drive. Somehow a folder on it is now a "operating system" folder. Whenever I plug in the USB drive I have to click on Tools -> Folder Options and uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files" on the View tab, or I can not see the folder. How do I set it as a non "operating system" folder? On the properties tab of the folder, the hidden attribute is ticked and greyed out so I can not untick it.

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

My home pc is running slow and i wanted to do some poking around and I checked the folder properties for My Documents folder and it listed something like 3000 folders. However when I open it up there is roughly 20, at the most. Where are these other folders coming from? I do have show hidden folders. I also have a decent amount of mp3's, maybe a couple hundred folders there, but nothing in the 1000s range.
- How can i found out what all these folders are?
- Also can anyone recommend a do-it-yourself site/guide to tackle slow pc issues? I want to go thru my pc and delete all the unnecessary garbage that comes with it and what i don't need.

The my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

Defraging main HardDisk Drive in XP Home edition w/ diskeeper 8.x and everything went smoothly as always, but then I decided to uninstall some useless apps and then went back to re-defrag and the reserved system space disappeared. Diskeeper was moving my files into the area where the reserved system space used to be so I stopped it. I then ran system restore and brought my system back 2days and re-tried to defrag and the reserved system space is still missing. Is this even a big deal? The computer (Dell 4400 P3) seems to be working just fine. Thanks.

I did a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 laptop. My hard drive has a capacity of 11gb. After the clean install I only have 4.8gb left on the hard drive. I have followed reformatting instructions and installed again, but get the same result. It is taking forever to test different suggestions, since I have to keep reinstalling. File system is ntfs. A good portion of the gig being used is in Documents and Settings, but I thought that should get wiped out. I don't understand why I am still seeing folders for iPod, Lexar, etc. I have burned 16 hours on this.

System runs fine and all appears to function OK. However, the drive capacity is not accurately displayed anywhere in the system (other than BIOS). I'm trying to find out how I can have the drive space accurately displayed.

I just restored my xp computer to an earlier system restore point. After checking the properties of my c drive I found that the used space on my hardrive had increased by about 3/4 of a gigabyte. I couldn't understand why that was, so I used a program called dirgraph to analyze, and chart what amount of space the individual directories each use on my c drive, and then took a snapshot of the chart.
I then undid my restore, and instead of regaining the .75gb back, I lost another .75gb. So I used dirgraph again, compared snapshots, and found where the extra space is being taken from. Dirgraph shows a subdirectory of c called "System Volume Information". It has a subdirectory called "restore". In it was another subdirectory with a large 5gb file, and 2 smaller .75gb files, named rp1064, and rp1066. One of the .75gb files was not in the snapshot I took before I undid my restore. I know the system restore put them in(it added the 1st when I did the restore, and the 2nd when I undid the restore). But the thing is that my system restore is set to use 12% of my hardrive, or 4010mb(max allowed). And the file(csystem volume information

it all started with me tryin to free up space. i was down to abt 5gb on my windows drive so i copied a video file which was 1.5gb across to my 250gb drive no worries. i then deleted the the original file. after it was sent to the recyle bin, i opened up the recycle bin and deleted it. only to be hit with a file in use error? has happened before so i ignored it and went to delete it again only before i could hit delete i was hit with a bsod.didnt pay that much attention i only noticed that it said the win32k.sys file was the culprit.i rebooted the machine and bang, a bsod before the welcome screen.this time i pay attention, only to see that it doesnt mention the offending file just that its a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA problem.

A folder named "System Volume Information" has been created in each drive (C:,D:,E:,F:)and consuming significant disk space day by day. Whether deleting these folders will create any problem. Any other technique to stop increasing the size of these folders ? Please suggest.Presently consuming more than 3 GB in total.
Sometimes I need system restore to speed up the PC (besides other registry tools )therefore this function is enabled in the system.
