File Folder Whopping 67.7 GB - Out Of Space

Sep 23, 2009

I run Windows XP Professional. I have an 80 GB hard drive with only 3.04 GB of free space. That's 4% of free space, and Disk Defragmenter requires at least 15% to run effectively. Needless to say, when I try to run that utility I don't get much bang for the buck. The Windows file on the hard drive consumes a whopping, eye-popping 67.7 GB (size on disk: 62.3 GB) and contains 32,209 files in 1,807 folders. I've tried to clean up the temporary files. I've run the system's "Disk Cleanup" utility, including all hidden files and folder in the search, until I'm blue in the face.

I've deleted so much stuff, I hope I haven't deleted anything important. Beyond that, I don't know what to do. I recently purchased and installed an additional hard drive for storage purposes, but all of the system programs run off of the one that is nearly out of space and I get frequent computer prompts about low space. What can I do? The 80GB drive badly needs defragmenting -- we're talking so much red that it looks like the Communist flag -- yet I cannot do anything about it. How can I retake this drive from whatever there is in Windows that has just about totally claimed it?

Whopping Hard Drive Space

Jan 21, 2009

I have 16GB of hard drive with 40% free space.Yesterday I downloaded bit torrent (7MB) in order to hear audio from torrent (67MB).Now this should have not taken up more than 1/2 a percent of my hard drive. As soon as I installed the bit torrent and it downloaded the 3 CDs totaling 67MB, I checked my hard drive space and it took up a whopping 5%.It went from 40% free space to 35%.This can't be.I checked my c drive and add/remove programs to see if there were any hidden uploads, but I didn't see any.I then uninstalled the bit torrent and the 3 cds, and it only gave me back less than one percent.Where did this 5% go and how can I find whats taking up this 5%.I didn't make any changes otherwise.

Also, under file types it won't let me edit or remove the commands for folder, drive, and file folder.

Running Out Of Space System Folder Too Big

Dec 27, 2005

I have a problem that give me headache. my hardisk is running out of space. it's capacity is about 19 GB and i think that enough for my Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 PC. While recking my brain toward the problem, i notice that the Windows foler in C: is too big, about 6.4 GB.! It's that reasonable, it's it? Uninstalling some programs is not my choice as i need all the program for my work. It's something can I do? of course i have done disk cleanup.

Misreported Disk Space - Folder Options

Jun 9, 2006

Really strange problem. Windows XP reports that I'm low on disk space. And if I open My Computer, right-click on the hard disk and go to Properties, it shows ~26GB of Used Space and ~4GB of Free Space. However, I do not understand what is taking up so much space. It is a new PC with very little data.Furthermore, if I 'Select All' on the contents of C:, and right-click for the properties of all files and folders, the Size on Disk only equals 11.6 GB, which seems more reasonable. (FYI, I have already set 'show hidden files and directories' in Folder Options)

File Removal Doesn't Recover Space

Mar 16, 2006

I was capturing digital video from camcorder and after compressing and burning it to DVD, deleted this file of 12GB size, since it is bigger in size it was not even shown in Recycle bin and whole space occupied by this file never recoved. After this incident a 6GB file from digital video capture happend exactly similar way. So in essence 18GB space is gone somewhere without any clue. Later tried running Norton tools and file system check, but no use. None of these able to detect this file. Searching the files of the same name(assuming misplaced somewhere) returned empty list and recyle bin is also empty. Also tried looking for big size file in C:WINDOWSTemp but no use.

Remove Hibernate File To Regain Space

Jun 8, 2003

As default Windows creates a file (c:hiberfil.sys) to save the complete memory if you hibernate. It is the same size as your memory eg. if you have 2GB Ram, windows will create a 2GB file!. If you don't use hibernate,You can remove the file by doing the following: 1. Go to Settings / Control Panel / Power Options 2. Click Hibernate and uncheck Enable Hibernation 3. Click Apply and you have gained some Hard Disk Space.

Eatting Hard Drive Space - Virtually No User File

Jul 6, 2005

My laptop has a 6GB hard drive which is down to about 400mb remaining. I have virtually no user files (documents) and have even removed most of my programs to get up to 400mb. I have had to reinstall XP a couple of times. Could this be why my hard drive space is being eaten up? I can't see XP taking up 5.6GB! After installing sp2 and other updates there now seem to be many files in the windows directory with rediculously long names (like $NtUninstalKB835732$) each using several MBs. While I'm asking... add/remove programs won't allow me to remove an old Norton Antivirus and a couple of other things taking up about 500mb. Tells
me it can not access the network (I'm not now but was once networked in the
office but all the programs were resident on my hard drive).

Folder Or File Won't Stay On Top

Mar 12, 2005

I've got this problem. It's a little problem, but quite annoying. It's only present on one of my 3 PC's. The problem exists on a new Toshiba laptop that I recently bought. It's XP home, and I put SP2 on it. Here's a description of the problem: Let's say that I've got an IE website open, and I want to delete a file. I right click on the file, and then click delete, and everything's fine. I get the little window that says "do you want to delete this file", and, as I move my pointer to click OK, as soon as the pointer gets into the desktop area, the delete window disappears. In order to keep it "on top", I've gotta close out or minimize the IE window. It's the same no matter what file or folder I open. As soon as the pointer enters the desktop, the file or folder disappears. It won't stay "on top". I've tried to find a way to keep the current file/folder "on top", but haven't found one.

Folder Turned Into File

Nov 5, 2006

Recently I had some problems with my OS in that when I re-booted I began getting the disk check utility running and it found bad clusters in my hard drive. My hard drive is partitioned into a C drive with only the OS and programs on it and a D drive with all my files saved there. The scandisk found bad clusters in both partitions. When I chose the automatically repair option I thought my problems would be fixed. Instead what happened was that it took a folder which had about 200 mp3's in it and converted it into a file with no file extension. So it isn't even recongnized by my OS.

Set Owner And Permission For A Folder/file On?

Sep 6, 2005

First, I still have problem to set a folder to be private. It should be a VERY EAY task. But when I right click the Property of a folder on D: drive its "Make this private" check box is gray out.So I can NOT make a folder be private in D: drive.

It seem to me the private folders are private under "My Documents" in C: drive.

I read from Help, it says a drive MUST be NTFS

But I type

convert D: /fs:ntfs

It says my D drive already is NTFS format.
Since it already in NTFS, then why I can't
make it private?
