As default Windows creates a file (c:hiberfil.sys) to save the complete memory if you hibernate. It is the same size as your memory eg. if you have 2GB Ram, windows will create a 2GB file!. If you don't use hibernate,You can remove the file by doing the following: 1. Go to Settings / Control Panel / Power Options 2. Click Hibernate and uncheck Enable Hibernation 3. Click Apply and you have gained some Hard Disk Space.
I also am having an issue with 100% of CPU usage being used. I have years of backups from using Registry First Aid and wondered if I can delete these. Maybe I should not have it checked to create a back up each time it is run? Also should I run a hijack this report because of CPU usage or are they even related. If someone could send me a link to a list of programs that need to be running maybe I can shut some of them down.
I'm using Windows XP. The 18Gig drive in my laptop is almost full & I need more space. There are almost 2 Gigs in my Documents and Settings (D&S) folder. I do not have any other users but years ago I did setup for two users. I have eliminated the other user but I still have Administrator, users and other settings in D&S folder. Can I combine them into a single folder and eliminate a lot of unneeded files. How do I decide the ones I need and the ones I can get rid of? Please don't tell me to format the drive and start over I just purchased a 100Gig external USB drive and moved all my data files but I would like to free up more space to record audio files. I have used XP resources to eliminate files and have painstakingly looked at each folder and eliminated where I could.
I have been receiving a low disk space message, it suggests cleaning up and removing files. Now I am receiving a 0MM free disk space messgae, suggests the same, but it will not allow me to remove anything, it says, ironically because there is no disk space. I am not sure how or why this has happened. I added a new 1gb memory card a month or so ago and have not added any new programs, I also bought a portable hard drive, but I am not sure how that all works. I just want to clean out/clean up my laptop and still keep the things I need.
I create a new Restore Point each month as I start my monthly maintenance sequence and also SpyBot seems to create one. I see by the Restore Point calendar that there seems to be a Restore Point for each day in October. I'm curious as to what process is creating these Restore Points but mainly I'm wondering how to delete some (most) of them. Aren't they consuming a humongous ammount of disk space?
I run Windows XP Professional. I have an 80 GB hard drive with only 3.04 GB of free space. That's 4% of free space, and Disk Defragmenter requires at least 15% to run effectively. Needless to say, when I try to run that utility I don't get much bang for the buck. The Windows file on the hard drive consumes a whopping, eye-popping 67.7 GB (size on disk: 62.3 GB) and contains 32,209 files in 1,807 folders. I've tried to clean up the temporary files. I've run the system's "Disk Cleanup" utility, including all hidden files and folder in the search, until I'm blue in the face.
I've deleted so much stuff, I hope I haven't deleted anything important. Beyond that, I don't know what to do. I recently purchased and installed an additional hard drive for storage purposes, but all of the system programs run off of the one that is nearly out of space and I get frequent computer prompts about low space. What can I do? The 80GB drive badly needs defragmenting -- we're talking so much red that it looks like the Communist flag -- yet I cannot do anything about it. How can I retake this drive from whatever there is in Windows that has just about totally claimed it?
I was capturing digital video from camcorder and after compressing and burning it to DVD, deleted this file of 12GB size, since it is bigger in size it was not even shown in Recycle bin and whole space occupied by this file never recoved. After this incident a 6GB file from digital video capture happend exactly similar way. So in essence 18GB space is gone somewhere without any clue. Later tried running Norton tools and file system check, but no use. None of these able to detect this file. Searching the files of the same name(assuming misplaced somewhere) returned empty list and recyle bin is also empty. Also tried looking for big size file in C:WINDOWSTemp but no use.
The problem I'm having is, every week I do a scan disk and defrag. I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. The only connection I can c is this copying Dig pix straight to disc...Am I right or is there sumthing else going on
My laptop has a 6GB hard drive which is down to about 400mb remaining. I have virtually no user files (documents) and have even removed most of my programs to get up to 400mb. I have had to reinstall XP a couple of times. Could this be why my hard drive space is being eaten up? I can't see XP taking up 5.6GB! After installing sp2 and other updates there now seem to be many files in the windows directory with rediculously long names (like $NtUninstalKB835732$) each using several MBs. While I'm asking... add/remove programs won't allow me to remove an old Norton Antivirus and a couple of other things taking up about 500mb. Tells me it can not access the network (I'm not now but was once networked in the office but all the programs were resident on my hard drive).
What are the steps needed to access one of my partitions, delete it, then use 1/2 the space and apply to system drive and the other 1/2 to another partition?
I'm having problems with ntdll.dll, so i want to replace it to see if that'll work. Problem is that ntdll is in use. Safe mode doesn't help. I read somewhere that you have to disable system file protection in order to replace dll files that are in use all the time. But it's complicated, at least for me. Anyway, can anyone talk me through replacing it? And tell me what i need to restore my system in case i screw up
I was recently using Azureus to download some MP3 files. One of the files didn't finish. The file's folder and some of the music appears to be in the folder I designated for the downloads. When i try to delete it, Win 2K Pro refuses to recognize it. It tells me the file doesn't exist! Same thing if I try to rename the file. A search will not find it either. Anybody have an idea how I can get rid of this thing? It's not causing me any problems, but it's driving me nutz! I don't want to resort to a format!
I currently have XP SP3 V.3300 installed on my computer. My audio driver seems to be having problems with SP3 for some reason (*which I found from a bit of searching around on the internet). Consequently, I have been trying to uninstall it to re-install SP2, but I cant find the file to uninstall under add/remove.
Normally when you click on a folder or file in My Documents, and right click on that file or folder, you should get a list of options on what you want to do with that file/folder, including deleting it. However, I have a very stubborn file in my computer that will not delete. When I right click it, it does not give me the option to delete it. I can not remove, rename, or move the file. It won't do anything at all. Is there any way at all that I can delete or remove it
i know i just marked both threads solved, but i do have a couple more questions about specific left over files and add-remove program entries.
1. i have a folder in documents and settings/all user/applications for authentium. authentium was [i believe] from when i used the cox internet security suite which i did not like and uninstalled. in one of the folders is a quarentine folder with 4 items in it. trend micro doesnt pick those up during full scans, and im not sure how to scan each file with t-m. can i safely delete these or the whole authentium folder??
2. also, authentium antivirus SDK-2 shows up in add-remove programs. i thought i had removed authentium a while back. when high-lighted it doesnt show a "remove" button, doesnt show in start-programs list , nothing in program files either. i saw an authentim listed in the HJT uninstall manager couple days ago and deleted it, didnt think i saw it in the add-remove list at the time. how do i remove this entry?? is it necessary to remove other than annoying me?..........
Is there a way to remove or delete some files on the computer through the BIOS Set Up. Because my pc is not working properly as it keeps on loading because of the software/files that is currently saved on my pc...it really messed up my computer..won't even do some commands on the computer.
what file runs when you click on Add/Remove Windows Components in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel Mines malfunctioning and Id like to try and replace it, but I can't find any info on where to look for it. When I click on it now, instead of getting a box with choices for Windows, it goes immediately to the action of installing, without going through the choosing part at all
It all started a few weeks ago when I could not move a folder to the recycle bin because it "could not find it". This week i did somehow get it to move there, but when i tried to delete it for good I got the same error. So i used Tune-Up Utilities 2008 in an attempt to get rid of it. The folder is gone, but the error remains. I think the bin is not working properly anymore either. I moved some folders of music to the recycle bin but they weren't there yet rar files i had deleted were. I have tried many many different commands, and a "restore recycle bin" registry edit, and safe mode.
Tech guy has altered something on her XP OS to append a .pdf extension to any file she downloads from the net. I understand that it was for her own protection as she can't execute any viruses, but it needs to be disabled to allow her to upgrade her flash player. I know the work around is to download the standalone file and manually remove the .pdf but would prefer to nip the problem in the bud.
Hi,when I go to Control panel>add or remove programs>add/remove window components,I get an error message saying"setup was unable to open information file sidebar.inf"
i wanted to copy a cd image 4.18GB ISO format from partition F: NTFS 9GB free to partition D: (FAT32 12GB free space) and windows gives me that crap there is not enough space and i should do a disk clean up. I made a disk clean up to partition D: and there was 3GB of system restore files!!! maybe coz i deleted 6GB earlier anyway i deleted the system restore files
Only NTFS partions can have files with file size more than 4GB..i hope theres nothing wrong with my windows or my hard disk..and i wanna know if theres a way to move that ISO image..thanx in advance.
I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.
I recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Ran many different anti virus and spyware software and they did not detect anything.
I had to uninstall HP Photosmart C4100 series only because I was missing some wording on the buttons that just disappeared for some reason, It said to uninstall the program and then just reinstall it. Well now, when I go to reinstall, it will not automatically start so I clicked on my computer and dvd-rw Drive (E and there are no files, in fact it states that my my file system is CDFS and the CDA Default - Full It says all space used 672 MB and Free Space 0 Bytes
I'm played with the folder options over and over and for some reason ever though I have clicked open folder in same window and "launch folder window in a separate process" is NOT clicked, for some reason when I double click to open a folder it still opens it with a new window. Also, under file types it won't let me edit or remove the commands for folder, drive, and file folder.
I went into "Control Panel" and clicked on Sounds and Audio Devices. That brought up the dialog box: Sounds and Audio Devices. Then I can pick either the Audio or Voice tabs. (They both have volume buttons.) Then when I push the Volume button I get the following error message:
Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install.
So, I go into Add or Remove Programs and select "Add New Programs" on the far left. Then I push the "CD or Floppy" button. Then I'm asked to insert the installation CD. So, I put in the Windows install disk and click Next. (In the I386 folder of the install disk is a file named: "SNDVOL32.EX_." That's why I think I need to select I386.) So, after I push Next, up pops a box called "Run Installation Program." In the Open box is: D:SETUP.EXE. To the right of that is a Browse button. I push it and up pops the Browse box showing several folders and a file. I select I386 and it contains several folders and 3 files: NETSETUP.EXE, USETUP.EXE and WINNT32.MSI.
Should I select one of those files or folders or should I do something completely different?
I've installed my e-GeForce MX 4000 64mb video card and enabled dual-monitors i no longer have the standby option. When i go to start-turn off computer the standby option is shaded and i can't click it.
I have re-installed windows XP home using the OEM Key on my laptop. Prior to the re-install, it would allow me to put the computer onto hibernate or standby, now post re-install, I cannot put the machine into standy by.
My laptop won't come out of hibernation. The only solution is to reboot. I sometimes loose info as a result.I have unchecked "enable hibernation support", but it still goes into hibernation. Will the computer stay on if I enable a screen saver?
Recently I installed a Linksys WMP54G wireless network adapter on my desktop (HP Pavilion a556x with Windows XP Home installed). My computer will not hibernate on its own. Settings in power options are correct (I think) and the hibernation is turned on. I looked in the properties settings on the wireless adapter and there is no power management tab.
Thinkpad T41, XP Pro Powermanagement is set to hibernate when I close the lid - Works great Used to open the lid, press the little power button and it would resume from hibernate just great. Lately it won't resume from hibernate. When I press the pwoer button the disk shows no activity and it just sits with a black screen. Typing keys or moving the mouse has no impact. However, wacking the computer seems to wake it up and then everything proceeds as normal. I would rather not have to wack it.
