what file runs when you click on Add/Remove Windows Components in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel Mines malfunctioning and Id like to try and replace it, but I can't find any info on where to look for it. When I click on it now, instead of getting a box with choices for Windows, it goes immediately to the action of installing, without going through the choosing part at all

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to remove windows messenger by going to control panel -> add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components I misread the directions for this windows XP setup box and made it so that only windows messenger had a checkmark because I thought this meant that only windows messenger would be modified removed unfortunately, this just meant windows messenger stayed the same and all the other components i had installed were removed. I know they are still on my computer since for accessories/games I can go to start -> run and type in something like "winmine" and minesweeper will open up, however if I go to the start menu and look in games it is empty

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to remove Windows Messenger, I made a mess of the Add/Remove Windows Components section of Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Instructions are very confusing, as Windows tells you in order to add/remove the various components, either check or uncheck the box. Not knowing if I should check or uncheck, I tried both, and in the process removed numerous if not all the components.
I managed to get Internet Explorer and Outlook Express back. I honestly do not remember how I did this as I was in a panic state. Meanwhile, I lost MSPaint. And, I'm worried about the other components, like Indexing Service, Networking Services, etc. in order to reinstall components that may or may not be missing, do I simply CHECK the boxes, Accessories and Utilities is NOT checked. I'm assuming that's the reason for why MSPAINT disappeared.
I am completely unable to generate ANY interest in this, and am baffled as to why, so maybe I can get some help here. how to actually get XP to recognize the checkboxes. Recently cleaned up a friend's very infected machine. The jury is still out as to how much damage was done (specifically to the registry), but something weird is going on. When I right click the C drive in My Computer, the EZ CD Creator 5 install program starts executing. I didn't see a autorun.inf file or on the drive which is the only thing I can think of. Any ideas?
Figured I'd add some more info. I've installed a second drive to take backups to. Backup of 12G of data to the drive while the OS was up took 1.5 hours, took much less from an emergency disk, weird. XP SP2 256K memory. I'm also getting a windowformsparkingwindow popup on a shutdown. Reasonably sure this is due to HP stuff on the machine. Java is busted up but I wanted to start getting the backups going before uninstalling that and reinstalling.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI uninstaled some windows components and it turns out that I need them and have not been able to reinstall them. I have been trying to reinstall the advanced features in my sounds and audio devices. Since I removed that feature when I play a DVD no my computer the sound will not get very loud. I am having no problem with other videos just DVD's. But I have also tried reinstalling games and other features and they will not install either.
When trying to install I use the Windows Installation CD and the installation seems to go fine. I don't get any error message, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I also tried the Add/Remove Programs feature in the control panel and got the same results.
When I try to add Fax Services as an XP Home SP 2 windows component in the add/remove control panel, I get a prompt for file fxsapi.dll. I can see the file in :WindowsService Pack Filesi386 but this setup routine says it can't find it even when I point it to it. After I hit retry many times I try the other solution it asks for- which is to insert the windows xp home service pack 2 CD-ROM. I do that and it says it can't find the file on the CD either. I've also tried removing MSN and it says it can't find certain files to remove MSN either. What is corrupted? Service Pack 2? I have 3 other XP computers and never had this problem before

I can solve it by booting an XP disk and going into recovery mode to copy a new gdi32.dll over the old one, but I was thinking since I am going to be seeing alot of SP3 updates, and a good deal have errored out already, it'd be cool to automate the fix just a little to save some time. Time adds up when you have to let the Windows CD boot up, and then type out the file paths for copying the file, etc.Is there a way to run a batch file from a bootable CD or USB drive? I want to boot up, run the bat, restart. Seems like it'd be a very fast and very easy solution. I just don't know how to do that.

I read an article that said all you had to do was edit the Registry by doing a search for ShellNew and remove the entire key if you didn't want any of them.
