When I visit websites I found some characters are not shown correctly, especially at email username and password and answers at google Q&A.Some unknown ASCII characters appear.Everything else are ok.I think technical help forum should allow to post graphic, 'coz I tried to attach screenshot, but couldn't.
View 3 RepliesSorry if this is a repeat. My Toshiba Satellite M45 running Win XP Home, SP2 is caught in a boot-up loop. It shows the Toshiba splash screen, the "Windows is starting up" screen, then flashes a blue screen with white characters (too fast for me to make out any detail), then the "Windows didn't startup properly" (I forget the precise wording) screen, with the choices of Safe Mode, etc. I've tried every option on the list, but it still fails, returning to the Boot Options screen. Mea Culpa: I haven't done a backup in quite some time, so I'm anxious about the data on the hard drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install Windows XP as a second OS as I already have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed XP on my new Acer Aspire Revo 3600 (Managed to finally get HDMI sound working okay, etc, etc, but that's another story.It came pre-installed with a Linux distribution, which didn't even get past the boot screen, and up until recently the wireless keyboard supplied was working fine (plug and play I'm assuming).Then starting yesterday whenever I pressed any given key on the keyboard, it would come up with another character (not the one I pressed). Note that some keys are still mapped correctly, but for example the "I" key will come up as if I pressed "7", and "P" will end up with "9", etc. It's as if it thinks the right had side of my alphabetical QWERTY keys are the number pad.Note that this same issue also first happened in the Linpus Linux command prompt when I first received my Revo, but that didn't matter because I put XP on since.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHowever, when I check the task manager it reports "VM Size" as at the same level or higher than "Mem Usage" for all process, e.g. firefox.exe Mem Usage 77,720K and VM Size 118,756K. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Is this what it should do, or have I disabled Virtual Memory incorrectly?

View 4 Replies View RelatedDVD-R+RW rom will not burn. I was in MS search, and it came up with this: mfc42.dll is incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted. I entered mfc42.dll in the search in MS search and it showed at least 12 mfc42.dll items. They all look pretty important. There was one that was windows folder. This is way over my head, does anyone know exactly what this pertains too and how on earth it is connected to my DVD not working? What will happen if I do delete it? Or should I?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSometimes, on one computer with XP Pro SP2, when characters on keyboard are input like the backslash, colon, brackets, etc, totally different characters are input.By restarting the computer, this issue is corrected, but it keeps happening every couple of days. This is a fresh install of XP and a new computer. The computer does not have any other language settings other than English Canada.Could it be something the user is inadvertently pressing or setting?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi needed to reformat win xp home and i cannot install Roxio because the upgrade advisor is incorrectly reporting incompatibility. (i am at win xp sp2) I did thisds before and it reinstalled nicely a copla years ago Microsft recognizes it they had a page on it in Help and Support (i put in Roxio Creator 5.1 Basic. it told me to try a couple things but to no avail and the workaround says ignore it..IGNORE? HOW?It can't be ignored cause it won't let me install. this is the disc that came with the puter (Dell Dimension 8100) a few years ago. would anybody have any ideas of how to install Roxio (i cannot afford to buy any new software right now and using WMP 10 is just not as comfortable Roxio is easy and it also writes text so the name of each tune that have bought and burned to a CD-R that I play shows up on my car CD player.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have kind of an odd/tough question. I have a font with several characters that are encoded only in Unicode...I think. When I open up Character Map, I can see the characters there and it of course gives me the Unicode numbers for it. These characters have no corresponding keyboard key or Alt code. They appear to be solely Unicode. Normally, in such a case, in the Character Map I can hit Select and Copy and then paste the character in whatever text program I want. For some reason though, I can't with these characters. I don't know if the font is damaged or what.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with accented characters. When I write myself, If I use Times New Roman all accented characters will be changed to some strange symbol. Even if I change the character with the dictionary program, it will automatically change back to the strange symbols. This problem I have overcome, by using ARIAL. The real problem is, that the e-mail I receive in aforeign language, it has the same strange characters. I have also installed on Oxford English-Spanish dictionary. Even the writing on this dictionary gets changed from the original characters. This is an example (Desesperaciçn) the o gets changed into a ç. Or an è gets also changed into ç. If I log into a non English WWW site, even on those pages it will change the accented characters to some strange simbols.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Spanish in a program, and it says I should be able to type CTRL+SHIFT+a to get the a with an accent, and various other shourtcuts. None of these work. In fact, the only way I can get a Spanish character to appear is by using the ascii codes (ALT+0241 for the Spanish ñ, etc) I can find some characters if I hit the ALT+SHIFT combo -- just not all the characters, and then I can't use certain keys (like the = sign becomes an upside-down question mark ¿ why the special keyboard mappings would not work?

He bought a new one and attempted to uninstall the old one. I guess he did it wrong because when I tried to install the software for the new turbo stick I get a message that says I have to uninstall the old one first. View 6 Replies View Relatedits my previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

username2
Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help!
My computer screen freezes up after a while, then turns into a blank light blue screen and then into a black screen. I have used regcure, PCMedkit, and PC Doc Pro I have also tried some of the online help for a fee but nothing seem to work. Lately when trying to reboot I got a blank red screen. I'm using xp pro and a Nvida GeForce 9400GT GRAPHICS CARD.

I use a developer program to make executables (hobby of mine saves me going troppo) called Clarion, it works OK, I made a DOSable program with it, it works OK.
Once I could open to full size DOS screen by pressing the Alt+Enter keys and it would stay open until I was finished with it, then I could revert back to a small screen by pressing Alt+Enter keys again.
Now if I press Alt+Enter keys the DOS screen appears, but it stays open in full screen for a couple of seconds then automatically closes back to the usual small screen.
I have tried right clicking on the icon, properties, screen and putting a dot in the full size option, but this does not work.
I have scanned my PC for viruses etc but no joy there.
I have Dialup only, so don't ask me to do a Panda or Trend scan as they drop you if you no got broadband.
I'm using XP pro, 512meg ram, using a Gigabyte MB, and Nivida video card.
XP working OK-dokie, sound ok-dokie, video ok-dokie, screen to DOS wonkie.
how to fix this?
My laptop has started to freeze at times,then the screen would blackout then appear with a black screen with a blue box inthe middle giving BOOT DEVICE OPTIONS Hard Disk Drive, CD-ROM/DVD, Floppy Disk Drive, LAN Boot it froze blacked out and now keeps going to this option page ,where as before if you turn off then on it rectified itself.
View 7 Replies View Relatedwhen I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : windowssystem32configsystem."
You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?

The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv
Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?
i get this error when i tried to open up my computer, first the windows xp loading screen works fine, then after that the screen just goes black and stays like that forever. this happened when i tried to uninstall a USB Bluetooth driver and it was requested to restart my pc so i did, and after that restart i cant get in no more, the screen just goes black after the windows xp load screen. im wondering how can i fix this problem? please help me guys... thank you.. and o yeah one more thing.. when i tried it on safe mode it went to the welcome screen but after that when i try to move my cursor i didnt move at all then i restart my pc again and the whole thing happens once more

He could do nothing except reboot it using the power button but on rebooting, there was a 'no signal' message on a black screen. We have checked the monitor connections (the monitor works when connected to his second computer) and even replaced the video card but of course this made no difference (no signal) We've taken out the HD and installed it on his second system. Does this mean that the most likely cause now is the motherboard/bios or is there something wrong in our approach/deductions
