I'm running on WinXP SP2, and when I go to My Computer and try to open the drive, instead of a folder opening, I get the option to "choose the program I want to use to open the the file." How do I fix it so it just opens normally as a folder?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed XP on my new Acer Aspire Revo 3600 (Managed to finally get HDMI sound working okay, etc, etc, but that's another story.It came pre-installed with a Linux distribution, which didn't even get past the boot screen, and up until recently the wireless keyboard supplied was working fine (plug and play I'm assuming).Then starting yesterday whenever I pressed any given key on the keyboard, it would come up with another character (not the one I pressed). Note that some keys are still mapped correctly, but for example the "I" key will come up as if I pressed "7", and "P" will end up with "9", etc. It's as if it thinks the right had side of my alphabetical QWERTY keys are the number pad.Note that this same issue also first happened in the Linpus Linux command prompt when I first received my Revo, but that didn't matter because I put XP on since.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHowever, when I check the task manager it reports "VM Size" as at the same level or higher than "Mem Usage" for all process, e.g. firefox.exe Mem Usage 77,720K and VM Size 118,756K. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Is this what it should do, or have I disabled Virtual Memory incorrectly?

View 4 Replies View RelatedDVD-R+RW rom will not burn. I was in MS search, and it came up with this: mfc42.dll is incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted. I entered mfc42.dll in the search in MS search and it showed at least 12 mfc42.dll items. They all look pretty important. There was one that was windows folder. This is way over my head, does anyone know exactly what this pertains too and how on earth it is connected to my DVD not working? What will happen if I do delete it? Or should I?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi needed to reformat win xp home and i cannot install Roxio because the upgrade advisor is incorrectly reporting incompatibility. (i am at win xp sp2) I did thisds before and it reinstalled nicely a copla years ago Microsft recognizes it they had a page on it in Help and Support (i put in Roxio Creator 5.1 Basic. it told me to try a couple things but to no avail and the workaround says ignore it..IGNORE? HOW?It can't be ignored cause it won't let me install. this is the disc that came with the puter (Dell Dimension 8100) a few years ago. would anybody have any ideas of how to install Roxio (i cannot afford to buy any new software right now and using WMP 10 is just not as comfortable Roxio is easy and it also writes text so the name of each tune that have bought and burned to a CD-R that I play shows up on my car CD player.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. He bought a new one and attempted to uninstall the old one. I guess he did it wrong because when I tried to install the software for the new turbo stick I get a message that says I have to uninstall the old one first. It is not in the add/remove, programs or computer files. I can't seem to find it anywhere? Is there a way that I can uninstall it?

I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP. I went to the Properties on the Start Menu and decided to switch from Classic Start Menu to the newer version. In the list of programs on the new Start menu was EXCEL.EXE, but the icon was wrong and when I clicked on it, it couldn't find Excel. I went to the properties of the link and changed EXCEL.EXE to Excel. It still not working, I deleted the link.Now whenever I click on an icon on my desktop, the system tries to open it with Excel. Apparently the change screwed something up, but I do not know how to get back to where I was before.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I came on the computer today, the first thing that came up was a warning from Lavasoft Ad-Aware telling me something about a regkey being modified and then it said Allow or Block. I figured it was a bad thing, so I clicked block and went on. My Firefox was working fine. However, when I went to open my iTunes, nothing happened. The only program working for me was Firefox. So, I restarted my computer and all of my icons to different programs showed up as errors (I don't know if that's the right word, but none of them would open). So, since I couldn't run any of my anti-virus programs to do a scan, I went online and ran the Trend Micro House Call scan. But, each time I do it, it gets to a certain point and then my taskbar disappears and I can't get it back.I've tried searching everywhere for a solution but they all require me downloading something which doesn't work since I can't open any windows.

I turned it back on and when it got to the desktop, no task bar items started, and all of the .ink shortcuts on my desktop wouldn't display icons, just the broken icon icon, if you know what I mean.
