I know that most of us have had a dll issue at some time or another. However, with xp pro, I have been lucky enough not to have any at all.
A pc has been cursed with dllhell, so please suggest any ideas/solutions.
Before xp pro has finished booting (which takes ages anyway) the following message appears:-
'the ordinal 6663 could not be located in dll mfc42.dll' (related to launapp)
A possibly related issue to this is that some strange things happen with the system (windows explorer crashes and restarts if some programs are opened, or if I access the external usb disc drive. It makes sense to deal with one problem at a time.

DVD-R+RW rom will not burn. I was in MS search, and it came up with this: mfc42.dll is incorrectly installed in the Windows folder and should be deleted. I entered mfc42.dll in the search in MS search and it showed at least 12 mfc42.dll items. They all look pretty important. There was one that was windows folder. This is way over my head, does anyone know exactly what this pertains too and how on earth it is connected to my DVD not working? What will happen if I do delete it? Or should I?

on opening my IE7 and got an error message saying "it could not find the exe file".I searched for the file through Search in the start menu and it couldn't find it either. I went and looked myself in my Program FilesInternet Explorer and it is there. I can see it but my computer cannot.
I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP and have never had an issue before today. I have updated both my anti-virus and spyware programs and have run them.

I am running Windows XP. I went to the Properties on the Start Menu and decided to switch from Classic Start Menu to the newer version. In the list of programs on the new Start menu was EXCEL.EXE, but the icon was wrong and when I clicked on it, it couldn't find Excel. I went to the properties of the link and changed EXCEL.EXE to Excel. It still not working, I deleted the link. Now whenever I click on an icon on my desktop, the system tries to open it with Excel. Apparently the change screwed something up, but I do not know how to get back to where I was before.

I just downloaded AOL's browser today, and it flagged me about some potential Spyware called "Searchit". I clicked the button to go ahead and block it, and this caused my attempts at opening other browsers to cause CPU utilization to spike, and these browsers never opened up.

When I came on the computer today, the first thing that came up was a warning from Lavasoft Ad-Aware telling me something about a regkey being modified and then it said Allow or Block. I figured it was a bad thing, so I clicked block and went on. My Firefox was working fine. However, when I went to open my iTunes, nothing happened. The only program working for me was Firefox. So, I restarted my computer and all of my icons to different programs showed up as errors (I don't know if that's the right word, but none of them would open). So, since I couldn't run any of my anti-virus programs to do a scan, I went online and ran the Trend Micro House Call scan. But, each time I do it, it gets to a certain point and then my taskbar disappears and I can't get it back.I've tried searching everywhere for a solution but they all require me downloading something which doesn't work since I can't open any windows.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition and it keeps opening on it's own no matter what I'm doing on my computer at the time.I shut it down and it pops back up again, crashing my game window if i'm in a game at the time.I've left my computer normal while i go afk, then come back and it's popped up again. It does this randomly.I've tried killing the process ehtray.exe in task manager, and I've stopped and disabled all WMC services but nothing works.I don't use the WMC so how can I keep this from opening? This just started recently and I haven't changed anything on my computer.Btw, I've scanned my computer with Symantec Antivirus, Adaware, SpySweeper, & RegClean.

My PC was running flawlessly for about two months now, and then yesterday I came back to find my computer off. I turned it back on and when it got to the desktop, no task bar items started, and all of the .ink shortcuts on my desktop wouldn't display icons, just the broken icon icon, if you know what I mean. Anywho, when I went to start any program, it would either ask to use the web service to find what to open the exe in, or just open it notepad. Why note pad works and no other exe does

I have no idea what may have caused this problem, but recently, whenever I try to open a .msi installer file, I get an access is denied message. This happened a couple of weeks ago, and I left it alone. Now, I just discovered that when I open a .msc file (like services.msc), I get the same result. I went back to that same installer and the same thing still happened. And right now, I just recalled that the same thing happened with .log files. I just tried to open one and it wouldn't let me. Anyone have any idea what caused this or why it is happening? I couldn't find any help on Google or on previous posts.

I recently did a PCRegistryCleaner "recommended speedup" via running "services.msc" every time I open an Excel file I get a Windows Installer Preparing to instal screen which must be Cancelled before Excel will open up. There were many items recommended to be Disabled and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest an easy way to fix my problem rather than working tediously through every Disabled item one at a time?

I'm running a Windows XP home SP1 on a Pentium 4 2.79 GHz Toshiba laptop with a CD/DVD burner.A little while ago, I tried opening an audio CD (one purchased from a retailer) and the disc wouldn't read--I double clicked it from My Computer and it notified me of an I/O device error.Recently, I tried burning an audio CD (using Nero), but now blank media isn't being read either, and again, there is an I/O device error.
