As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.
Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".
Today I've been receiving a Windows error warning of a power surge on the USB hub. This warning continues to pop up (and block document windows) even after removing all USB devices. If I click on the error, I get a dialog box reporting that one USB device is drawing too much power through the hub, and it lists 5 USB ports with one highlighted as the problem device. It instructs me to remove the device and click the Reset button.I have three problems with this error. First, from the dialog box there's little way for me to determine which physical USB port is the problem, so I have to unplug all devices. Second, doing as instructed (disconnecting the devices and clicking Reset) doesn't clear up the problem, as I immediately get another warning.
when i open a folder e.g. My Documents, My Computer... a little while later i get this message...and yeah, so i press 'Don't Send' most of the time then after that i can't minimize my browsers and other windows by pressing the task bar, i had to press the minimize button on the window T__T. i have selected the 'Send Error Report' and the 'Debug' option before but i have no idea what's really happening after that...
Windows XP Use reports cyclical surging of screen.Every 5 - 10 seconds, as if hard-disk is checking itself, top tool bar frame changes shade, keyboard entry is suspended, address is highlighted (making next entry wipe out what has been enetered), pages brought up to top, pull-down menus will close-up. This occurs whether connecte to the internet or using local programs like Word or TurboTax.
I Have just installed a Maxtor SATA 200 GB hard drive in my computer.Partition Magic reads this drive at slightly over 200 GB, but WindowsXP reports it as 193GB. What gives?
I have Windows XP Home edition and use Outlook Express 6.0 My Brother has Windows XP Pro edition. He also uses OE 6.0. Whenever I send or forward an email with an attachment, he can't open the attachment. It says there is no file associated with it. I am sure that he doesn't have something checked off or something is checked on in his settings, that is causing this problem. This is frustrating for me because i have been sending him all kinds of emails with attachments and he hasn't been getting them. What would cause this to happen?
Lately I've been getting a virus warning from Norton, called Hacktool and is the antiwpa.dll file in the System32 folder. Norton is unable to fix, quarantine or repair this.
I want to send pictures via Email. After I highlight a picture, I get an option to reduce the picture size for ease of sending. After clicking OK I do not get any screen allowing me to address the E-mail with the attachment.
I get the following message every time I try to 'send' messages...""A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to send data to the server. Subject 'Fw: A Romantic Winter Ride', Account: 'mail.infostations.com', Server: 'mail.infostations.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC13"" What can I try to fix this??
i needed to reformat win xp home and i cannot install Roxio because the upgrade advisor is incorrectly reporting incompatibility. (i am at win xp sp2) I did thisds before and it reinstalled nicely a copla years ago Microsft recognizes it they had a page on it in Help and Support (i put in Roxio Creator 5.1 Basic. it told me to try a couple things but to no avail and the workaround says ignore it..IGNORE? HOW?It can't be ignored cause it won't let me install. this is the disc that came with the puter (Dell Dimension 8100) a few years ago. would anybody have any ideas of how to install Roxio (i cannot afford to buy any new software right now and using WMP 10 is just not as comfortable Roxio is easy and it also writes text so the name of each tune that have bought and burned to a CD-R that I play shows up on my car CD player.
I try to log onto MSN (when I click on the big blue E) I keep getting this error message: Cannot find file:///c./WINDOWS/s.htm'. Make sure path or Internet Access is correct. I am running windows xp and am not having any problem getting e-mail or getting on Yahoo.
when sending an email a papeer clip appears and when opened a window just gives the same message that I have put in the body of the email. This is usually in ones I have sent or can be in received mails
Used to be able to send the directory list using DOS command like DIR > LPT1: How do you now send a directory list to the printer?? The printer is on a USB port and named HP750 and the port says it is DOT... Tried using DIR > HP750 and DIR > DOT... but no luck. Anybody know how to list the directory to the printer?
I'm having a problem with my system. I've narrowed down the problem, to one of my storage drives. It has 2 partitions, E & F. I have 3 AT100 IDE HD's(One XP Boot drive, & Two Storage Drives). And a CDRW/DVD Combo Drive. Everything was working fine when they were all mounted on the Primary & Secondary IDE Controller. I tried to defrag one of the partitions of E&F Drive,...and Disk Defrag locked up shortly after it started. I had to End Task,...and eventually it stopped. Thought nothing of it,...and proceded to try and mount that drive on the Via Raid Controller on my mobo. It Can be used as Non-Raid IDE Controller. Then I found that windows xp would only boot if I disabled the Via Controller. When the Via Controller was Enabled,...I would get Stop 0x00000024 Error BSOD. This is the controller that the problematic HD was mounted to.
When I try to boot in Safe Mode,..I get Stop 0x00000050 Error BSOD. So I then booted from XP Home CD, and went into Recovery Console. I did CHKDSK /r/p on all drives. The E&F Drive would get this error; "One or more Unrecoverable Parts found". Or something like that. Is there anything else I can try to get my HD to work without formatting? Just to clarify,...This is NOT the HD with XP installed. It is an extra Storage Drive. And everything was working perfectly fine untill Disk Defrag locked up. And I tried mounting that drive on a different IDE Controller embedded in my mobo.
About a month ago my husband was having trouble sending emails. I would sometimes, but it would eventually work for me, but still not for him. He told me he had heard about the email antivirus scanners and somehow they block outgoing mail. So I reinstalled our Grisoft AVG antivirus without the email scanner. Now we can not send any attachments at all. Pictures, documents, nothing. I since reinstalled the email scanner since when trying to send I would get the message that a virus was attached. It still happens. It kicks it back along with about 50 messages telling why. Looks something like this..........
I have used Incredimail since 2002 (free version though I did buy the letter creator) without many problems other than slowing everything down. Suddenly 4 months ago it started to shut down when ever I tried to send a powerpoint or word document, which meant I had to use Outlook express to send any serious mail Error messages vary from the usual 'Incredimail has encountered an error... etc' to 'The memory cannot be read at 000011234 etc.'
have a problem sending emails through outlook express,it has a backlog of emails ,probably because i tried to send my sister a big file of photos, cant recieve or send emails
When I open remote assistance I recieve a message saying that my current settings prevent me from sending an invitation. What do I need to change to make this work?
You can easily create an icon on your desktop that allows you to compose and sand a mail by double clicking on it without opening Outlook Express.1- Find a free space on your desktop and right click on it on New -> Shortcut2- Enter in the space 'mailto:' (w/out quotes)3- Press 'Next' button.4- Enter in the space a name for the icon (i use 'mail')5- Click 'finish'.That's it.
I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....
I have installed a targus 7 port powered USB HUB on my computer. Device manager reports unknown device. I have deleted and it restalled the drived after the system rebooted. Device manager still saying unknown device. Their is not driver needed according to the manufacture. When the PC is booting it does see the IPOD mini and the Flash drive. But once the PC is fully out and login and I look a the device manager is still reporting unlnown device error (code 10).
i have windows XP home edition service pack 3. and i use Microsoft office 2003, and well recently it began to pop up and say microsoft office word has not been installed for current user. please run setup utility. Well i only have one user, never had another user created until recently (temporary fix) is there anything i can do, the main user is called the owner, it says its the computer admin, but i guess there is still an admin user, i cant get to that. the only way i can get ms office to work was to create a new user, open all the office programs, export the office registry, and import it to my main user, thats the only thing that works, for a little bit.

Quote :NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A U.S. federal jury found that Microsoft Corp. infringed audio patents held by Alcatel-Lucent and should pay $1.52 billion in damages, the No. 1 software maker said Thursday.
Microsoft said it plans to first ask the trial judge to knock down the ruling and will appeal if necessary. It said the verdict is unsupported by the law and that it had already licensed the technology in question from Germany's Fraunhofer.
Alcatel-Lucent had accused the world's biggest software maker of infringing patents related to standards used for playing MP3 digital music files.
I can remember back when there was MS DOS - NEC DOS - PC DOS - Phoenix DOS. The differences were hardware support and some had a few of thier unique commands and utilities included. Some where along the line Microsoft was able to reign in DOS and then there were two MS DOS and PC DOS.I tried to upgrade my new HP/COMPAQ from XP HOME to XP PRO. After about 6 hours of effort with Microsoft Suooprt and HP Support the answer is:Andre K (HP Tech): Toby, this Desktop was shipped with an OEM version of Windows XP home operating system. HP does not support operating system upgrades provided by Microsoft. You need to purchase the upgrade CDs from HP to resolve this issue.
