View 8 RepliesMy PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe get the server cannot be found message. If we now reboot, everything is up and running again (until the next time). This happens almost every day. Worked with the Verizon On Line techs and they found that my modem and associated equipment is in fine working order, and speculated that the problem is probably in my computer. I tried several possible fixes from some local experts (cleaning out the Explorer cache, running Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, Norton anti-virus, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, etc.) to no avail.

I have always trusted this Anti-Virus program but it turned off the windows XP firewall and they tell me that I don't need it with their 2005 version because worms, hackers, viruses etc. are stopped through their program. Anyone know anything about this ? Obviously I want to be well protected

The icon appeared with a message to warn me of spyware attack. On clicking the icon, it took me to IE for http://www.spylocked.com/?aff=334 or http://www.wayofprotection.com/soft/. I also found my IE is installed with a 'Security Toolbar 7.1'.
In the Control Panel, I found a program 'Internet Explorer Secure Bar' which I wanted to delete. However, once I click the 'change/move' button to delete the program, it required me to reboot before deleting but on reboot, no deletion of the program took place. I want to know how to delete the program.I also want to know how to delete the icon on the right bottom.

There I was, typing along, when Norton flashed on my screen. I had a virus(I was connected to the internet at the time.) Norton announced that cleaning it
up was NO problem. Good, I thought. A few seconds later came the blue screen we all know, and hate. Hit the off button, waited a few seconds, rebooted. To my shock and dismay, Windows announced that it could not find windows/system32/config/system.
I have been trying to remove a tool bar called 'security tool bar 7.1' I think its a rouge.

I do not want to install it, as somebody told me this is a tool by MS to takeout personal information on my OS (XP) and MS Office and other MS Software.I know I use genuine legal copy. But why should I allow MS to take more information ? Is not WPA through internet is not sufficient ? Can this tool take information on other products/3rd party software like NERO,MS OFFICE and ArcSOft ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI think that I have a virus which is stopping me from 1) Installing Norton Internet Security 2005 properly, and 2) Stopping me from accessing all anti-virus related sites, for example - www.symantec.com, ww.grisoft.com, www.pandasoftware.com, and when i tried to download AVG 6.0 from another site which was unrelated to antivirus, I found that I could access the site but the download failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.
Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".
Today I've been receiving a Windows error warning of a power surge on the USB hub. This warning continues to pop up (and block document windows) even after removing all USB devices. If I click on the error, I get a dialog box reporting that one USB device is drawing too much power through the hub, and it lists 5 USB ports with one highlighted as the problem device. It instructs me to remove the device and click the Reset button.I have three problems with this error. First, from the dialog box there's little way for me to determine which physical USB port is the problem, so I have to unplug all devices. Second, doing as instructed (disconnecting the devices and clicking Reset) doesn't clear up the problem, as I immediately get another warning.

This occurs whether connecte to the internet or using local programs like Word or TurboTax.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my system. I've narrowed down the problem, to one of my storage drives. It has 2 partitions, E & F. I have 3 AT100 IDE HD's(One XP Boot drive, & Two Storage Drives). And a CDRW/DVD Combo Drive. Everything was working fine when they were all mounted on the Primary & Secondary IDE Controller. I tried to defrag one of the partitions of E&F Drive,...and Disk Defrag locked up shortly after it started. I had to End Task,...and eventually it stopped. Thought nothing of it,...and proceded to try and mount that drive on the Via Raid Controller on my mobo. It Can be used as Non-Raid IDE Controller. Then I found that windows xp would only boot if I disabled the Via Controller. When the Via Controller was Enabled,...I would get Stop 0x00000024 Error BSOD. This is the controller that the problematic HD was mounted to.
When I try to boot in Safe Mode,..I get Stop 0x00000050 Error BSOD. So I then booted from XP Home CD, and went into Recovery Console. I did CHKDSK /r/p on all drives. The E&F Drive would get this error; "One or more Unrecoverable Parts found". Or something like that. Is there anything else I can try to get my HD to work without formatting? Just to clarify,...This is NOT the HD with XP installed. It is an extra Storage Drive. And everything was working perfectly fine untill Disk Defrag locked up. And I tried mounting that drive on a different IDE Controller embedded in my mobo.
A Norton popup keeps asking if I want to close Windows firewall. Is there a problem using both firewalls at the same time
