Fairly Nasty Virus - Downloaded Norton Anti-Virus
Sep 20, 2008My PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?

Oct 2, 2005We get the server cannot be found message. If we now reboot, everything is up and running again (until the next time). This happens almost every day. Worked with the Verizon On Line techs and they found that my modem and associated equipment is in fine working order, and speculated that the problem is probably in my computer. I tried several possible fixes from some local experts (cleaning out the Explorer cache, running Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, Norton anti-virus, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, etc.) to no avail.

Jul 7, 2005I recently upgraded to the Norton Anti-Virus 2005 edition. I have always trusted this Anti-Virus program but it turned off the windows XP firewall and they tell me that I don't need it with their 2005 version because worms, hackers, viruses etc. are stopped through their program. When either program reads C:/windows/I386 it intermittently powers down. I think there's a corrupt file in the main body of I386, but can't isolate it. I'm not sure which type of file should be in this area.

Mar 25, 2010Running Windows XP on a one year old Vostro 220. Problem seems to have started after I replaced McAffee with Norton 360 per Comcast's changeover. I have since uninstalled Norton but the problem persists. Ran PSA which showed no hardware or memory problems. I believe Norton must have changed some of the registry values. I am running Norton on my laptop with Windows 7 but that is not a problem.

Sep 15, 2005I have a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop. Until last night, I was having trouble doing anything on my computer. After start up, my outdated version of Norton would pop up saying a virus was found. I couldn't get anything else to respond and the window would never go away. So I eventually got it to stop, and the I ran various spyware, registry, and anti-virus utilities to the point where my computer was working flawlessly.
Then I decided that I would just uninstall Norton (since I installed a new anti-virus program). I hadn't updated it in over a year and I never really liked it anyway. It took over an hour to remove (I think because the quarantine folder was so large). I chose to remove everything including the quarantine folder. After the uninstall successfully completed, I restarted the computer. I got to the Windows XP user selection screen (I have 5 users set up) and tried to select my user profile, but I couldn't click on it.

Jul 7, 2008i don't know if this problem is hard ware or software, but here goes.my friend brought me a laptop that had a dark screen. this thing had lots more problems. it was running XP SP1. with an out dated 2005 norton AV. the first thing i did was put an external monitor on it. i was then able to see what was going on. i upgraded to SP3 and uninstalled Norton. i then installed AVG. ran a full scan. i installed spybot and adaware. ran both the only thing left is 3 instances of "wieldtangent" that i am not able to remove. i thought that the screen problem would go away, with the virus scan but it did not. when you boot the laptop you can see the splash screen, then it goes dark. (you have an image but it is not lite up) then about 1/2 way through the boot screen comes back on and then it goes out. then you are able to see the desktop and about 5 sec. later it goes dark again.

May 16, 2005I recently was infected with a computer virus. Norton AntiVirus 2003 initially caught the virus and it supposedly deleted it, so I was not concerned with the message details. However, almost immediately after receiving the message I realized the virus was not completely removed. A DOS window popped up two or three times and then Norton shutdown. I tried opening Norton again but it would not open. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it would not reinstall. I tried the Windows Update site and the page shows no conent. Any ideas on how to identify the virus so I can take steps to remove it?

Jan 18, 2006I have this older notebook computer I got for free, its a Duron 900mhz 256megs 20gig system, its pretty old and slow. But since its all I have right now I will have to live with it. I just did a fresh XP pro install on it and I am trying to descide which Virus software I should use that uses very little of my limited resources. I have used Norton before and whoile it works fine on newer faster computers it seems to really slow down older slower machines so I would like to stay away from Norton on this notebook. So anyways, my real question is, do I really even need virus software?
I dont ever download from unknown sittes and only open emails from known senders. I surf the net with Foxfire so spyware isnt that bnig a problem as it is with IE. Also I dont have anything important on this computer that I would worry about losing to a virus infection.I have a Linksys router that should have a built in hard firewall, correct? SO can I get away without the antivirus? I run Spybot and CCleaner to keep my computer free from spyware and junk. Do I need any other programs to keep things running smoothly? DO I even need Spybot if im using Firefox? And If I do need to run a Virus program, which will slow down the computer the least which uses the least of my limited resources? I liked Fsecures EZvirus it seemed to slow things down far less than Nortons.
How To Best Anti-Virus?
Jan 9, 2007I currently use Norton Corporate edition anti-virus. It works pretty well but takes up a lot of resources. I don't mind as much on my home PC but it runs TOO many tasks that I want running on my laptop. What is a good alternative to Norton that doesn't HOG too many tasks but still gets the job done?

Are those not popular for some reason, or are the others favored only because they are free?I really don't mind a reasonable annual subscription, but I do want a light footprint and effective security.
