Running Windows XP on a one year old Vostro 220. Problem seems to have started after I replaced McAffee with Norton 360 per Comcast's changeover. I have since uninstalled Norton but the problem persists. Ran PSA which showed no hardware or memory problems. I believe Norton must have changed some of the registry values. I am running Norton on my laptop with Windows 7 but that is not a problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop. Until last night, I was having trouble doing anything on my computer. After start up, my outdated version of Norton would pop up saying a virus was found. I couldn't get anything else to respond and the window would never go away. So I eventually got it to stop, and the I ran various spyware, registry, and anti-virus utilities to the point where my computer was working flawlessly.
Then I decided that I would just uninstall Norton (since I installed a new anti-virus program). I hadn't updated it in over a year and I never really liked it anyway. It took over an hour to remove (I think because the quarantine folder was so large). I chose to remove everything including the quarantine folder. After the uninstall successfully completed, I restarted the computer. I got to the Windows XP user selection screen (I have 5 users set up) and tried to select my user profile, but I couldn't click on it.
i don't know if this problem is hard ware or software, but here goes.my friend brought me a laptop that had a dark screen. this thing had lots more problems. it was running XP SP1. with an out dated 2005 norton AV. the first thing i did was put an external monitor on it. i was then able to see what was going on. i upgraded to SP3 and uninstalled Norton. i then installed AVG. ran a full scan. i installed spybot and adaware. ran both the only thing left is 3 instances of "wieldtangent" that i am not able to remove. i thought that the screen problem would go away, with the virus scan but it did not. when you boot the laptop you can see the splash screen, then it goes dark. (you have an image but it is not lite up) then about 1/2 way through the boot screen comes back on and then it goes out. then you are able to see the desktop and about 5 sec. later it goes dark again.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine w/out locking up. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out why my BIOS clock wasn't working. Finally after spending over $130 on a new XP w/SP3 disc and new hard drive I figured out I only needed the little $5.95 calculator battery. My hard drive was corrupt so I bought an 80gb. I installed brand the new XP o/s w/SP3 and it freezes frequently. I have all the same hardware as I had before. My previous 20gb hard drive had XP but it had been upgraded to SP3 (not bundled on one disc but it worked fine until I tried to reinstall windows big mistake).
I took out my USB PCI, and tried to reinstall but it still locks up. I haven't tried to install without my ethernet pci card but I will try it probably tonight or tomorrow. Not really sure what to do to fix it. I know its probably some conflict but I'm more of a user than a fixer. Also, my computer shows installed RAM 1000mb but my computer says only 383MB are available. I don't understand why. It should be moving much faster.
It's about my Acer laptop (model 5672) with Windows XP Pro SP3.
The problem with the laptop is that he randomly freezes. It can happened each two days or each 5 minutes. It doesn�t matter what program I�m using. When he freezes, I need to turn him off by pushing the onbutton.
When I want to reboot he refuses. He powers on, but when he should be showing the white Acerlogo screen (splash screen?), before the booting of Windows, nothing happens and the screen stays black.
The only thing I can do is power him off and start over again. But when I power him off, I noticed that at the end, the dvdwriter makes a lot of noise.
Only after a while or a lot of trying (on and off pushing on the button) he boots.
The not appearance of the white Acerlogo screen (splash?) at the beginning of the boot process tells me this isn�t a software problem.
I also have to mention that he went back to the factory 3 times in 3 weeks. The first time the hdd was changed, second time the RAM memory was faulty. The third time, they said they "tested complete system=>system OK No trouble found".
how can i fix this problem?
I use XP Home on an AMD Athlon 1700 with 1 GB PC 2100 RAM and a 16 mb GeForce vid card on an ABIT KG7 mobo. The system is scanned clean with Norton System Works, AD AWARE, SpyBot Search, Window Washer, etc. but WILL freeze or lock randomly when I am typing a word doc or sending email with Eudora thru my DSL acct. The only way out is to hard reboot. I don’t know what other diagnostics to perform and I want to stop the “freeze” problem. Any ideas about what I can try next?

I can hook back up to my phone line, and everything runs fine. I am also running Norton Internet Security 2005. I am using Norton's firewall, not Windows. I have been tested by Qwest, and all my lines and connections show good or in working order with their system. So I am wondering where to start checking in Windows setups or preferences. Where do I begin to look for problems or conflicts.

No hdd light, no error message, just complete freezure (not a real word, I know). Mouse won't move, keyboard is locked out. Sometimes when i restart the comp, it just hangs without even getting to the post screen. Other times i'll restart and everything will boot fine, but a minute or so after windows boots it'll freeze again. The freezing/restarting happen while playing games, right after closing the games, and/or when i'm surfing the web, or even when the comp is idle.

Then it works fine until it randomly locks up. It sometimes gives the blue screen if im in middle of using it but most times it will just lock up. Other times it will reboot itself. Started happening a few weeks back but seems to have gotten progressively worse. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have back-graded my new Dell A860 to XP (it came with Vista) and need to locate a driver package for audio, etc. My keyboard, mouse, and DVD drive seem to work fine, but I have no audio output for my Power DVD app. I also get an error message when I try to use my WMP. Most other functions seem fine, but I have only typed a few documents in Word and stored images from my flash drive.I have tried installing the driver & utility disc from my XP package, but get an error message saying the install failed. I assume that I need drivers, but perhaps someone with more experience would be aware of other problems I am missing. I am quite the neophyte regarding this sort of thing.

I know when XP came out sometimes you had to install the SATA during the install, but I haven't had to do that in ages. Is there a setting in the bios or something.

If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

I recently had problems with IE8 so I Uninstalled and installed IE7. All my favorites are under my favorites folder: Document and settings/Dell/favorites.When I try to go to one of favorites it tries to print for some odd reason. All the favorites have the unknown file format picture with them. When I try to add a new bookmark it does the same thing. It adds it to my favorites but won't open the website. It's like the URL isn't there with the favorite. Please help this is a friends comp and he needs it tom for school.

After doing that and rebooting, it no longer picks up any keyboards once its in windows. It picks it fine in bios (and I can choose which OS to load.. I have fedora on a seperate HD, not the one I boot off of). This is true for every keyboard! Wireless or not! So I'm stumped.Either windows removed some file when uninstalling the last wireless software, or I donno what else it could be.Any ways I can this fixed? I was thinking if I bypass the password into windows then I can reinstall the drivers. I think a normal XP cd would work?

My Laptop XP Pro with SP3 is totally different to the same on my PC, where I upgraded the Sp's as they came out. So the format is different between the two.I wanted to un-install my laptops version and install the version downloaded from MS, but I don't have the option to do so in Add/Remove on the Laptop as I do on the PC. Its listed, but no option to remove/uninstall.Can I un-install this SP3 in the registry or anyother way or could I just install my version and overwrite the current SP3.

I uninstalled it, which was a nightmare and took forever because their installer is bugged! anyway, I have gone through the Regedit and deleted all ref's to comodo, deleted the folders ect. Best as I can tell everythine has been removed. However I have programs, apps and games that used to access fine BEFORE installing Comodo that cant connect now! Should I do a reinstall of XP? or is there some other files that the firewall might of moded that can be replaced? Any thoughts or ideas? I have a post on the Comodo Forums, but after searching most of the day I have yet to find anyone with a problem like this after following the manuel uninstallation and I'm not to hopeful...
