I have windows xp and when I am on the internet the computer is always freezing up or running very slow and I will have to reboot the computer. I have 512mb of ram, 60 gig hard drive.
View 8 RepliesAbout a week back I seem to have gotten a virus that tried to act like a windows firewall popup in an attempt to get me to download bogus software that would do bad things to my computer, well I didn't fall for it, but AVG didn't pikc the virus up right away. But after a day or two it did, and stoped it, but it also found a few other viruses hiding out in windows restore files. I'm actually not sure if this is related to my main problem, but it happened around the same time so I'm reporting it. Ok shortly after I got rid of those viruses my computer started freezing. But I'm not talking about a total lock up. Its kinda like a slow freeze.

My comp is slow with programs (especially opening) and also on the internet. Aso, my processing light is always on, no flicker, just a solid light. I usually get frustrated and shut it down. I've ran a lot of anti-spyware, defrags, and disk cleanups. The disk cleanups used to allow it to run a lot faster, but now it doesn't help one bit. I'm thinking I'm just low on RAM,

We've been having some trouble these past few days with the computer just randomly restarting for no reason. At first my father was having the trouble, but I didn't believe him. So I decided to sit down a little while ago to confirm what he told me.He initially told me the restart happened as he was burning a CD, but then after a restart he burnt like four of them in a row with no difficulty. So then he said it has occured while playing music. So I tested it out, played a song on Windows Media Player, and then tried to play a second one. Boom, instant restart.Now, as I said I was looking elsewhere. I do have the "auto restart" thing disabled, and I do not get a blue screen of death. As for cleaning the computer? Way ahead of you on that one. Prior to me sitting down to test the music thing, I unplugged everything in my computer and opened it up.

It's frozen during games, launching games, browsing the net, and even while restarting itself. I've been lucky that I'm able to post this message without it freezing. I thought that maybe it was over heating but, I've had it for a year and I don't see why that would change now.

I purchased an installed a wireless PCI card.When I enable this card to connect to my wireless network, I have about 60-90 secs before the computer freezes up and I have to restart. I tried numerous PCI slots on the motherboard and they all lead the computer to crash. I have no idea what an explanation for this could be but I am assuming that perhaps the RAM they have installed (the stock 512 mb) is insufficient.

For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. View 6 Replies View RelatedI ran Ad Aware SE and later Spyawre Doctor and found nothing also clen temp. files on IE/Tools/temp folders then I ran %temp% and deleted all temp files but it gave me an Error File or Folder mon000 that says close any programs that might be using the file and try again. I don' know what file that is. there are two files that were not deleted: mon000.log and one named Dat.File pefib Perfdata Also ran ATF-cleaner

All drives are defragged weekly, the BIOS is set to boot off of the hard disk, and I only have the one OS installed.This thing use to boot to the desktop in 20 seconds.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi really need some help on this one, yesterday night when i was shutting down my computer i saw a msg saying somthing about error with disk and needed to run disk check(or disk verifying im not sure, you know the checking thingy on startup) so this morning i started my comp and it ran the disk check, this one was differnt to the other ones, it had somthing like verifying.. (step 1 of 3) stuff like that and after that was done the computer began to startyp very slow and sluggish also it freezes alot for eg when i move the mouse around, the pointer would freeze for half sec and so on by repeating this. im not sure if this is common. i'll post more info later when i/u get an idea of this so i'll know what im looking at.
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine w/out locking up. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out why my BIOS clock wasn't working. Finally after spending over $130 on a new XP w/SP3 disc and new hard drive I figured out I only needed the little $5.95 calculator battery. My hard drive was corrupt so I bought an 80gb. I installed brand the new XP o/s w/SP3 and it freezes frequently. I have all the same hardware as I had before. My previous 20gb hard drive had XP but it had been upgraded to SP3 (not bundled on one disc but it worked fine until I tried to reinstall windows big mistake).
I took out my USB PCI, and tried to reinstall but it still locks up. I haven't tried to install without my ethernet pci card but I will try it probably tonight or tomorrow. Not really sure what to do to fix it. I know its probably some conflict but I'm more of a user than a fixer. Also, my computer shows installed RAM 1000mb but my computer says only 383MB are available. I don't understand why. It should be moving much faster.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt's about my Acer laptop (model 5672) with Windows XP Pro SP3.
The problem with the laptop is that he randomly freezes. It can happened each two days or each 5 minutes. It doesn�t matter what program I�m using. When he freezes, I need to turn him off by pushing the onbutton.
When I want to reboot he refuses. He powers on, but when he should be showing the white Acerlogo screen (splash screen?), before the booting of Windows, nothing happens and the screen stays black.
The only thing I can do is power him off and start over again. But when I power him off, I noticed that at the end, the dvdwriter makes a lot of noise.
Only after a while or a lot of trying (on and off pushing on the button) he boots.
The not appearance of the white Acerlogo screen (splash?) at the beginning of the boot process tells me this isn�t a software problem.
I also have to mention that he went back to the factory 3 times in 3 weeks. The first time the hdd was changed, second time the RAM memory was faulty. The third time, they said they "tested complete system=>system OK No trouble found".
how can i fix this problem?
I use XP Home on an AMD Athlon 1700 with 1 GB PC 2100 RAM and a 16 mb GeForce vid card on an ABIT KG7 mobo. The system is scanned clean with Norton System Works, AD AWARE, SpyBot Search, Window Washer, etc. but WILL freeze or lock randomly when I am typing a word doc or sending email with Eudora thru my DSL acct. The only way out is to hard reboot. I don’t know what other diagnostics to perform and I want to stop the “freeze” problem. Any ideas about what I can try next?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have loaded Actiontec from Qwest to activate modem for DSL. Ever since doing this, Wndows (any progam I may be running) freezes. It only happens when I am online. I can hook back up to my phone line, and everything runs fine. I am also running Norton Internet Security 2005. I am using Norton's firewall, not Windows. I have been tested by Qwest, and all my lines and connections show good or in working order with their system. So I am wondering where to start checking in Windows setups or preferences. Where do I begin to look for problems or conflicts.

Sometimes it will freeze for no reason, yesterday it froze twice (Once I was just on MSN and the internet. Looks normal, fans are running in the PC, but is it frozen. I have to shut it off and restart. Then it works fine until it randomly locks up again. I have not noted any particular program or site that is running, it seems just random. Using Foxfire and Thunderbird (latest Vers).
