PC Shuts Down When Running AVG Anti-virus Or AVG Anti-spy?

Mar 17, 2007

Windows xp home sp2, Intel 3.0ghz 512MB approx 15 months old.PC shuts down when running AVG anti-virus or AVG anti-spy ware. When either program reads C:/windows/I386 it intermittently powers down. I think there's a corrupt file in the main body of I386, but can't isolate it. I'm not sure which type of file should be in this area.

Zone Alarm Getting Expired: Finding Anti-Virus Or Anti-Spyware?

Feb 6, 2007

I currently have Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 6 & it is due to expire in about 8 days. I was wondering what others of you used for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls etc.I have heard that sometimes it's not the best idea to use a complete package, like ZA internet security suite, for the whole lot You hear a lot of conflicting info about them all, I've heard that AVG is good, Norton isn't, someone said windows defender was good.

Computer Associates Anti Virus Program Is Running

Feb 2, 2006

For some reason Computer Assoc. program is running and I just cought it scanning but I don't recall downloading it. I have Norton utilities and don't need this other program. In the past zone alarm firewall asked me if I wanted to allow access and I checked yes because I was lead to believe it was part of my SBC Yahoo DSL. Now I know it's not. I disabled the program in the start up. I believe it can cause a conflict. Maybe I should uninstall it. I'm just puzzeled as to how I came to have this and why all of a sudden this program began asking for access

Fairly Nasty Virus - Downloaded Norton Anti-Virus

Sep 20, 2008

My PC recently got a fairly nasty virus (W32-Sinowal-based Maximus! or something along those lines) so we had to get it wiped. A few days later, my computer was all messed up again. I can only boot up in Safe Mode, my sound doesn't work, and it is running slower than normal. I need to find out if I have another virus (although the guy who fixed it downloaded Norton Anti-Virus and it seemed fine for a few days) or if maybe my computer is just dying. It's about three years old and apparently it was outdated before we even bought it. Is there any way the virus could have affected the computer's hard drive or whatever (yeah, I don't quite know what I'm talking about) or have I maybe gotten another virus?

Anti Virus Stopped Working - How To Identify The Virus

May 16, 2005

I recently was infected with a computer virus. Norton AntiVirus 2003 initially caught the virus and it supposedly deleted it, so I was not concerned with the message details. However, almost immediately after receiving the message I realized the virus was not completely removed. A DOS window popped up two or three times and then Norton shutdown. I tried opening Norton again but it would not open. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it would not reinstall. I tried the Windows Update site and the page shows no conent. Any ideas on how to identify the virus so I can take steps to remove it?

Need Anti Virus?

Jan 18, 2006

I have this older notebook computer I got for free, its a Duron 900mhz 256megs 20gig system, its pretty old and slow. But since its all I have right now I will have to live with it. I just did a fresh XP pro install on it and I am trying to descide which Virus software I should use that uses very little of my limited resources. I have used Norton before and whoile it works fine on newer faster computers it seems to really slow down older slower machines so I would like to stay away from Norton on this notebook. So anyways, my real question is, do I really even need virus software?

I dont ever download from unknown sittes and only open emails from known senders. I surf the net with Foxfire so spyware isnt that bnig a problem as it is with IE. Also I dont have anything important on this computer that I would worry about losing to a virus infection.I have a Linksys router that should have a built in hard firewall, correct? SO can I get away without the antivirus? I run Spybot and CCleaner to keep my computer free from spyware and junk. Do I need any other programs to keep things running smoothly? DO I even need Spybot if im using Firefox? And If I do need to run a Virus program, which will slow down the computer the least which uses the least of my limited resources? I liked Fsecures EZvirus it seemed to slow things down far less than Nortons.

Another Anti Virus Thread

Mar 17, 2006

I have read many of the "which AV?" threads and I see that Avast, AVG and Panda are all quite popular here.I do not, however, see much discussion of Trend Micro's PC-cillin, BitDefender or Kaspersky. Are those not popular for some reason, or are the others favored only because they are free?I really don't mind a reasonable annual subscription, but I do want a light footprint and effective security.

Anti Virus Program IsNecessary?

Jan 7, 2006

I currently have Norton Antivirus, but was considering uninstalling it so that less resources are consumed and to free up HD space. It has not really helped me in any way, the last time i got a virus was when i had activeX enabled, which i don't anymore since i use firefox. I also don't stupidly click on .exe files and the sort, so i couldn't get a virus like that.

So do you guys think it is necessary to have an antivirus program? should i keep Norton or can i ditch it?

It also has a box to select saying "protect my computer from unauthorized program activity". I have to respond to this box before opening any program and I cannot find a way to stop it from appearing. How do I get rid if this?

Anti-Virus Software Is Not Closing

Dec 5, 2008

I am trying to stop the Bitdefender Services on my Computer because IE7 is giving me trouble and I am almost positive that BD is to blame. So anyway, I can't stop the service normally, from any location.
I have tried stopping the service through the manage computer-services tab, i have tried stopping the service through msconfig-services tab, i have tried stopping the services from the Command Prompt, using the "net stop "service"" command, and i have even invoked an command prompt with full administrative rights and tried the "net stop" command, and i still cannot stop the bitdefender services. I have been able to turn off the functionality of the various bitdefender components within the bitdender program, but there are redundencies that seem to operate in the background in case a virus decides to attack or something; i am assuming that this is also why it's not letting me disable the service.
