View 12 RepliesHi! I've been working on a friend's kids pc that had 250+ viruses on it and it would only boot in safe mode. I removed the viruses, and attempted to run chkdisk/f, the system said it had to reboot to complete chkdisk, I rebooted and forgot it would only boot to safe mode and now it hangs at loading the mup.sys driver. I'm unable to get back into safemode or anything. I was able to launch the emachine recovery cd, but all I could get to run was ghost, and it advised running chkdisk cuz the drive has errors, I'm stuck, should I try and use my pc's winxp disk and try the recovery console on it? At this point we're ok with formatting and starting over anyways.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to this forum, so plz bear with me. I have the same problem as a previous poster with win xp. I was attempting to repair a flooder virus in my winlogon file(I know now it was an AVG glitch) and when restarting the computer my system went into a continuous start up loop. When I attempted to repair the os by replacing the file using the XP Cd; the computer goes into safemode, I get the error "xp setup cannot run under safemode", and the system reboots (repeating the process over and over).I don't want to do a clean install of xp. I've searched the web for hours trying to get answers and nothing.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMine is actually a spyware/virus issue but this forum seemed the more appropriate place for this particular set of problems.I'm working on a friend's computer (HP Pavilion ze5400). Windows will load normally but it is impossible to do anything useful from there for a number of reasons:RUN is not accessible. It does not appear on the start menu and pressing windows+R brings up a message that the feature has been disabled by the administrator. The control panel is not accessible for the same reason.Task manager? Nope. Disabled. RegEdit will not load even when manually found and executed through explorer...again, disabled.and of course, the username I'm using IS the administrator. Fun things, eh?Safemode starts to load then hits a BSOD that I can't read because the computer immediately reboots so the error only flashes for a fraction of a second.

But you can't get anywhere on the computer, I tried tapping F8 to get to safe mode if it would let me but it keeps saying keyboard failure. Is there something else I should tap for a DELL computer to get to safemode?
I was having disk partitians when I was trying to restart and run safe mode.Instead, I went to run, config and clicked on safemode in there under one of those INI tabs and now my PC will not boot at all. I have no Xp start up disk either. So I am unsure how to get my pc to boot at all now Can anyone suggest how to get my PC to boot backup? Anyone send me in the right directions or send me a way to get some files?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had troubles getting my Lite-On optical drive to run in DMA mode. I updated the JMicron drivers for it and it was working fine. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the JMicron update had two options, one for SCSI and one for Standard IDE. I did the first one and everything was working then I did the second one and now XP won't start. I don't know if it is just chance or what. XP just keeps restarting after the logo with the status bar. I have tried unchecking the "Automatically Restart" under system failure options to see if there is a blue screen but it still just restarts. I have also tried a system recovery to back a week ago to no success. When starting in safe mode and loading drivers a message comes up that says "ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys" or something like that. I don't know if that has anything to do with it either.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP Professional. I have an 80G HD and 2GB RAM. View 16 Replies View RelatedI changed the BOOT.INI section of msconfig to boot windows in Safemode. Upon getting in Safemode, the computer finally recognized USB devices and the CD drive again (wasn't doing so in normal mode). So, I insert a Windows XP disc, used the Advanced install mode (the one that overwrites the previous installation of Windows), and everything seemed to be going great.
However, the machine restarts and tells me this "Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now." and has an OK button. I click it, thinking it's going to boot into normal mode. Well, it doesn't. It boots up again, says the same thing.I click OK.Restart.Again.OK.On and on into infinity.
I'm pretty sure I had a trojan or something cause my computer kept getting worse. I tried several scanning programs but none of them cleared it up completely.Anyway, now I can't even get past the windows loading screen, and if I try to log in through safe mode, I get stuck at the screen that says "SyS.multidisk" or something. Is there any way that I can log in dos mode or something and completely wipe my system clean and reinstall windows xp? I don't have the disk, it came with windows XP already on it. I don't care if I lose all my files, I just want a working computer again, free of any trojans or anything. So, can I somehow log in dos mode or something (I don't even know how to do that), wipe everything clean, including whatever virus screwed up my comp, and reinstall windows XP without the disk? I'm assuming I have a copy of windows XP saved on my hard drive or something, cause my computer came with windows XP already installed and they didn't give me a disk.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWas never able to restart after that. Normal boot shows the windows initial screen, but eventually just restarts, safe mode does the same thing whether it's with network, command line or plain safe mode. Last known good configuration does the same.Needed to use a file so decided to remove the HD and re-install to another PC. I did have access to the file in question but now I'd like to fix the problem.
The other system uses AVG. I started a scan and it detected Cekar.d (A0003977.exe, wdfmgr.exe and initially ntldr.exe), Dropper.Inor (ntdetect.hta, A0003979.hta), PSW.Generic5.ABVW (ctfmona.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.AAFI (ctfmonb.exe), PSW.Generic5.AFYK (ctfmond.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.ZWT (LotusHlp.exe) and some others but for whatever reason the scan stopped. I restarted it and now the AV still finds most of the threats it was seeing before but not Cekar.d. in the ntldr.exe file.
Computer has been very slow in logging in and shutting down. Also my computer has been freezing for atleast 20 seconds or more until I have to just shut it down. I also found last night that my Malawarebytes scanner found this "Rogue Installer" which I deleted. My computer is still running slow to shutdown so I'm not sure if this program is still in. Actually, for a few months I had been having some trouble(intrusions) with some type of virus. I wanted to try to clean the computer on Safe mode. I tried numerous of times by clicking fast or holding down the f8 key for safemode but nothing happens. My second option was mscongfig box but I found there was no "BOOT. INI" option. I'm not sure if there is a way to restore this option?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p282/sw1sh1/LAC.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...tification.jpg
I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
The run link is missing from my startup menu...can anyone help me find it? I know this sounds dumb, but I really need to restore it to my startup so I
can take care of some other problems I'm having.
How do you remove the "Common Startup" items from the startup list in msconfig for Windows XP? I did locate and remove the "Run" items that are located in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun.

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

I somehow customized my startup to display a screen that reads, "This computer is set to explode in 12 seconds. Run away as fast as you can." The whole startup process stops until I click "accept."
I think it was some program that I was fooling around with and I thought it would be cute. But I've been sick of it for a long time now and don't know how to get rid of it.
