HJT Log Missing Files, And SafeMode AV Scan Problems
Jan 25, 2006
I have noticed a few things missing, the last 2 bolded out I know aren't of any importance but, the first 2 I am not completely sure of.
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 12:09:16 AM, on 1/25/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
Also, When booting into safe mode to run my PC Tools AV, SpyBot Search and Destroy, AdawareSE, PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Ewido Anti-Malware. My CPU usage is at a constant 100% when and, only when, I am scanning with PC Tools AV. It takes about 6 hours to scan my whole computer. Is there any way I can lower my CPU usage?
I try rebooting but it always shows up in safemode.Although it appears when rebooting to be in normal setting because I don't see safemode checked in start up.
I Accidentally Clicked A Folder That Started Installing Mcafee Virus Scan. I Realized That I Already Have Mcafee Virus Scan Included And Installed As Part Of Aol Safety And Security System. I Couldn't Cancel This Unintended Beginning Of The Installation So I Shut Down My Computer. Now, Every Time I Boot I Get A Prompt Sound And A Small Window Entitled Macafee Virus Scan Which Says Missing Resourse Dll, Please Re Install. My Uniblue Registry Booster Couldn't Eliminate.
I use McAfee for my virus protection. When I set it to scan Outbound files, it takes twice as long to start my Opera browser. Same with my Juno E-mail. It is so slow compared to Opera anyway. Would it be safe to stop that scan.
what I do regularly is simple backups of these files to external hard drive and DVD+RW's every x months. My point is that I don't keep different series of backups; I just keep overwriting my external drive and DVD's with the current backup, just to have the security of having a double of my data in a different geographic location in case of fire, flood, theft, etc. (knock on wood)
It occurs to me, however, that this system may not be entirely secure. What happens if, between the last backup and the current one, files on my system are modified in a way I didn't want? Or if someone else uses my computer and deletes files? Or if a file were accidentaly deleted, or even corrupted? In any of these cases, when I'd go do a backup, I'd be backing up a snapshot of My Documents that I don't quite want, because, unbeknownst to me, some of the files are corrupted or deleted, and it's not like I can go back in time and pull out a previous backup from (say) 2002 to recover a lost or damaged file. (The reason I won't keep previous backups is because I don't want to end up with an ever-expanding collection of dozens, and then hundreds of disks to keep in storage somewhere ... and even if I did, how would I know that the oldest DVD's in that pile weren't corroding and becoming unreadable over time...)
So what I want is this: a backup program, or separate application I'd run before the backup, which, when I come to do a backup, remembers the files from the last backup, and somehow compares the last backup to my current system (i.e. compares the previously backed-up files to what I'm about to backup), and tells me, before I proceed to overwrite the last backup with the current one, what has changed, in terms of which files are new since last time (obviously there will be new ones ... pictures, mp3's, docs), which ones are no longer there or corrupted (at which point I can make sure that the absent ones have intentionally been deleted since the last backup, and, if not, I can pull them back out of the previous backup and put them back on my system), before proceeding with the overwriting backup.
I looked at the different typical options, like incremental and differential backup, but they all involve constantly adding the new or modified files to an older initial backup, which always increases the number of discs you end up with. Also, those options will always keep the initial full backup on an old disc that's busy rotting away in the humidity. The way I'm talking about makes you always refresh your backup medium, and if your discs are no longer good, then you just replace them. In short, you would always have a fresh, full backup, and are sure that you're not copying corrupted files or that you're missing any, never to retrieve them again, because it tells you what the problems are before you proceed.
You see, normally, an incremental backup would be what I need, because it keeps an original version of the file, and then it keeps all incremental changes to that file over time, such as modifications. The problem with the incremental backup, however, is the principle that you're always needing more and more space to keep updating the original backup. If I'm backup up to DVD's, I don't want to have a new disc every time I incrementally backup my files. Also, how do you know that the original (1st) base backup, made years ago, doesn't now contain files that have become corrupted? Or the same for some of the earlier increments? Furthermore, there's the problem where, if you need to retrieve a file, you'd have to go back to the beginning, retrieve the original version, and then retrieve all the modifications across all the increments to get back to the version you want to get.
The way I'm talking about would be a rewrite your backup onto the medium (external drive, DVD's, solid state, whatever) every time you backup. That way, you always have a "fresh" set, and are not relying on an original base backup from 14 years ago + monthly increments, and don't have to worry about the original base backup itself having become corrupt after all these years.
Also, an incremental backup won't tell you what's missing or what's corrupt. Let's say you have your My Pictures. One of the folders is pictures from a Florida trip 5 years ago, and in it is a picture of when you had just caught a shark while fishing. That's a pretty important picture, and you want to keep it for all time. Well, meanwhile, you go on 20 more trips since that time, with 20 more folders full of pictures. 5 years later, you don't notice it, because you don't review old pictures very often, but that shark picture has become corrupt and irretrievable in your computer. Or, while viewing the pics from that trip one day, you accidentally delete it and don't notice. Or your friend or family member (for instance, a child) goes through your photos and starts deleting pictures. Or what if they open the picture in MS Paint and vandalise it by drawing a male member on your forehead. Now you come to do your backup of your whole My Pictures. If you simply overwrite the last backup with the current one, you're replacing a good copy of the shark picture with (potentially) a bad one ... or if it's been deleted, you're replacing the folder that had that picture with a folder that's missing it, and you'll never retrieve it again. If, on the other hand, you do incremental backups, then your picture is probably in the original base backup from 5 years ago, or else it's in one of the increments from 5 years ago, but who knows what the state is of the original base backup? Those original discs might be unreadable by now, and then there's the whole hassle of going up through the chain to get the pic. Not to mention that under this scenario, you have to notice yourself that a file is missing, and then take steps to retrieve it, as opposed to an application simply scanning and telling you so whenever you want.
Instead, there MUST be a way to do the full backup each time you back up (so you only have 1 set of discs to go into to find your files, and so that it's always relatively new, and not a rotten, corroded set of DVD's from 14 years ago), and that, before it actually does the backup, it tells you first what's missing, modified, added, corrupt between what you had the last time in your backup, and what you're about to overwrite it with now in your current backup.
I understand that the difficulty in indentifying corrupt files of any kind is that there are many different file types, and no program is so complete as to do that scan. But I guess I'm essentially worried about pictures, since mp3's and documents are less of a problem for me.
So really all I need is any application (not necessarily the backup program) to scan particular folders on my drive (only those I want to back up ... essentially My Documents, and not the whole drive) to check only 3 things:
1) which files have been modified (regular Windows xp search can do this if you advanced search for "files modified between ____ and _____", the 2 given dates being, say, the date of my last backup and the date of the current one); 2) which files are missing since the last backup (all this would involve is checking the files against a list ... seems simple ... and manually looking in Recycle Bin is obviously not enough because you may have emptied the Recycle Bin since last time); and 3) which files are corrupted
With the knowledge of these 3 things, I can take action to replace lost or corrupted files by taking them back out of my last backup. Then, I can safely proceed with the current backup.
I click on a site saw dick all there n clicked back.1 min later ive been getting these .exe files in my temp folders n my virus scan is always deleteing them n they keep on reporduceing itself anyways the name is backdoor trojan if anyone can tell me any programs, software to get rid of it , or any advice/support work be great guys
I was surfing threw the wbe to find some keys for my dish network, anyways, i clicked on a site threw Google and so nothing interesting so i clicked back 30 secs later Norton started picking up virus and spy-ware repetitively so i did a full scan and it picked up one file which i deleted next i turned it to safe mode and restarted next thing i know my computer will not load to desktop once it reaches to loading desktop icon it restarts itself over and over again
About temporary internet files, I regularly delete them by going to tools>internet options>general>delete temp files, but I noticed that when I run either my virus scan or my adware scan, it scans the temporay internet files for close to 2 hours, how can there be so many if I regularly delete them? I noticed the files it scans for so long are .IE5. Searching through the net I read that by going to tools, not all files are deleted, namely some index.dat files, and that it's hard to get rid of them. I read about a program, Mil Shield, that deletes them but haven't tried it yet.My main problem is that whenever I scan my comp, it takes hours to scan because of the temp files. Can anyone advise on how to solve this issue? Is it good to delete index.dat files or would that cause problems?
I went to use PerfectDisc yesterday, it suggested I do a bootup scan, I did, allowed it to do pagefile scan too. Ran fine. Then rebooted, went to do regular scan. it locked up on the Blue Screen of Death.
"Bad_Pool_Header" and gave some error info... 0x00000019, and so on.
Computer runs fine though otherwise, which is funny.
Then when I try to go to Registry Mechanic and scan, it goes all the way through, and on I believe the deepscan, it always goes to BSOD there. I think while it's in the HKEY section of current user.
There may be other programs that will cause the BSOD, but these 2 are the only ones so far. Please guide me through this....Anyone.
my computer is filled with all sorts of spyware and adware. Ive used all teh chekc programs etc. and deleted whatever i could but yet the pop ups continue to come. In add/remove programs i deleted everything i could but some things couldnt be deleted because the .dll files were missing or something along those lines. please review my hijack this and advise me further. In addition when i go to a website i must enter www or it doesnt connect to the site. on my other computer i can do that. what can i do to fix it??
Hi! I've been working on a friend's kids pc that had 250+ viruses on it and it would only boot in safe mode. I removed the viruses, and attempted to run chkdisk/f, the system said it had to reboot to complete chkdisk, I rebooted and forgot it would only boot to safe mode and now it hangs at loading the mup.sys driver. I'm unable to get back into safemode or anything. I was able to launch the emachine recovery cd, but all I could get to run was ghost, and it advised running chkdisk cuz the drive has errors, I'm stuck, should I try and use my pc's winxp disk and try the recovery console on it? At this point we're ok with formatting and starting over anyways.
I am new to this forum, so plz bear with me. I have the same problem as a previous poster with win xp. I was attempting to repair a flooder virus in my winlogon file(I know now it was an AVG glitch) and when restarting the computer my system went into a continuous start up loop. When I attempted to repair the os by replacing the file using the XP Cd; the computer goes into safemode, I get the error "xp setup cannot run under safemode", and the system reboots (repeating the process over and over).I don't want to do a clean install of xp. I've searched the web for hours trying to get answers and nothing.
Mine is actually a spyware/virus issue but this forum seemed the more appropriate place for this particular set of problems.I'm working on a friend's computer (HP Pavilion ze5400). Windows will load normally but it is impossible to do anything useful from there for a number of reasons:RUN is not accessible. It does not appear on the start menu and pressing windows+R brings up a message that the feature has been disabled by the administrator. The control panel is not accessible for the same reason.Task manager? Nope. Disabled. RegEdit will not load even when manually found and executed through explorer...again, disabled.and of course, the username I'm using IS the administrator. Fun things, eh?Safemode starts to load then hits a BSOD that I can't read because the computer immediately reboots so the error only flashes for a fraction of a second.
my computer restarts continuously and I can't get into safe mode! I tried pressing f8 and going to safe mode or the last known good config, but the computer just restarts all over again..
My PC (Win2000) will run in safe mode, but in normal it just gives a blank screen, it plays the windows startup music but its not the same. I don't know where to start.
Stop c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem, But you can't get anywhere on the computer, I tried tapping F8 to get to safe mode if it would let me but it keeps saying keyboard failure. Is there something else I should tap for a DELL computer to get to safemode?
I was having disk partitians when I was trying to restart and run safe mode.Instead, I went to run, config and clicked on safemode in there under one of those INI tabs and now my PC will not boot at all. I have no Xp start up disk either. So I am unsure how to get my pc to boot at all now Can anyone suggest how to get my PC to boot backup? Anyone send me in the right directions or send me a way to get some files?
I reformatted my drive. I performed a clean install of windows xp. My drive has already undergone a FIXMBR All hardware not essential for a working computer are not connected. Only my harddisk, Geforce4, processor, and RAM are connected. When I let windows xp professional boot normally or in safe mode, i randomly get one of the following.pci.sys missing or corrupted, use recovery console to.asapnp.sys missing or corrupted, use recover console to.or boot into black screen, computer dies.
I recently had troubles getting my Lite-On optical drive to run in DMA mode. I updated the JMicron drivers for it and it was working fine. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but the JMicron update had two options, one for SCSI and one for Standard IDE. I did the first one and everything was working then I did the second one and now XP won't start. I don't know if it is just chance or what. XP just keeps restarting after the logo with the status bar. I have tried unchecking the "Automatically Restart" under system failure options to see if there is a blue screen but it still just restarts. I have also tried a system recovery to back a week ago to no success. When starting in safe mode and loading drivers a message comes up that says "ESC to cancel loading SPTD.sys" or something like that. I don't know if that has anything to do with it either.
I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running XP Professional. I have an 80G HD and 2GB RAM. I have downloaded and attempted to install Mediaplayer11.On the reboot I get the dreaded blue screen with the error 0X00000019 (0X00000020, 0X8A3400270, 0X8a34002A0, 0X1A060006) I then have to go to the safe mode and do a system restore
I have a Toshiba Laptop with Win XPPro. Won't boot-up to Windows. I first get a blue screen error message and then a black page with options: Safe Mode- Safe mode w/ Networking- Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt. None of these work; when I select one it just cycles back to this menu. I tried Win Logo Key /r but nothing. I can get into Set-Up. The computer was acting kind of fishy before it quit; the cursor would start moving left across the screen and I couldn't control it. I would shut-down and it would be ok, until it happened again. I did a Restore to try to repair it but the next time I turned on computer
I changed the BOOT.INI section of msconfig to boot windows in Safemode. Upon getting in Safemode, the computer finally recognized USB devices and the CD drive again (wasn't doing so in normal mode). So, I insert a Windows XP disc, used the Advanced install mode (the one that overwrites the previous installation of Windows), and everything seemed to be going great.
However, the machine restarts and tells me this "Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now." and has an OK button. I click it, thinking it's going to boot into normal mode. Well, it doesn't. It boots up again, says the same thing.I click OK.Restart.Again.OK.On and on into infinity.
I'm pretty sure I had a trojan or something cause my computer kept getting worse. I tried several scanning programs but none of them cleared it up completely.Anyway, now I can't even get past the windows loading screen, and if I try to log in through safe mode, I get stuck at the screen that says "SyS.multidisk" or something. Is there any way that I can log in dos mode or something and completely wipe my system clean and reinstall windows xp? I don't have the disk, it came with windows XP already on it. I don't care if I lose all my files, I just want a working computer again, free of any trojans or anything. So, can I somehow log in dos mode or something (I don't even know how to do that), wipe everything clean, including whatever virus screwed up my comp, and reinstall windows XP without the disk? I'm assuming I have a copy of windows XP saved on my hard drive or something, cause my computer came with windows XP already installed and they didn't give me a disk.
I can't open some .exe files. I'm trying to install some drivers on a pc with xp, but for some reason when I click on the setup.exe file, nothing happens, it doesn't open or run. I thought that the driver was corrupted, so I tried to install that same driver on another pc with xp and it worked. I tried to install something else to see if I would get the same problem, at first the little window showing all the files that are being stalled shows for a second or two, then it disapears, it doesn't complete the installation. I should get a message saying that the installation is complete, but I do not get the message and I don't get any error messages, it just does nothing, I've installed this same program succesfully in another pc with xp too, but on this one it won't install. Someone suggested me to update the ms installer and to update net frameworks to the latest version, I did what was suggested, but I still get the same problem. I'm sure i'ts not a virus or spyware because I just made a fresh install of xp and I haven't gone online with that pc and I haven't downloaded anything from the net, even before making the fresh install, I didn't have any viruses or spyware. It seems that for some reason I'm not able to install just certain programs, because I can open and run other .exe files with no problem.
I had a differ video card installed which helped my pc. But some idiots decided to reload another version of xp pro. They did not use any back up program to save my files and everything they did save (which was about 60%) they loaded on to drive c: then drive d. I used to have one hard drive partioned into two. They made one big drive c:. So now to see my files - I have to go to my computer, then c: then d:. Files are in no order- program files, etc.. all mixed up in one big list.Ok smy next problem...I thought I could fix this by using my back up disks before the above people got a hold of it, well the pc took all the back up disk great, but I forgot about the d: drive no longer being there - so the disks tell me half way thru that they cannot get rights or something to d - but they do give an option to skip - which I did.. it installed the other few disks and when it said it was done, i had to reboot and i did.So.. at the end.. It boots up - but when Windows comes up - it tells me <windowsroot>system32hal.dll. is missing and to reinstall it.How do I do this? My computer is old, but it is all I got right now and I can not afford to buy anything..I will write a second post here - with my system info
Upon turning on the computer, we have been getting two different messages, not both at the same time. The first one was "can not find file ///cWINDOWS/System32/1KJddh8s.htm/" and the most recent "can not find file ///cWINDOWS/System32/4csuhtu0.html" What do these files do? How do we fix this?
I turned on my laptop, and many files were missing from folders. In particular, I had two folders on my desktop, with many subfolders in each. Each subfolder had multiple files in them. When I went to access one, ALL of the SUBFOLDERS and ALL of the FILES were gone. I tried a system restore, and it brought back the subfolders, but not the files. I then tried TuneUp, CleanUP, HijackThis, Ewido, Micrsoft Antispyware, Lavasoft, and many other programs to bring back the files, but nothing can find them. I also have a updated McAfee constantly running, and there was never a virus.
