Quicklaunch Icons Stop Showing Labels
Sep 27, 2010I noticed this morning that all my Quicklaunch icons had stopped showing labels.. restart fixed the prob, but only temporarily. Is there a fix that will save me the bother of frequent restarts?

May 9, 2008I'm sorry for posting so many questions here. But my Windows XP operating sytem isn't displaying icons when I download new items. Instead I have to right click > properties > change icon > OK. Instead of automatically installing the icon, it shows this:on the desktop. It displayed a similar image for virtually everything in the start menu too. This meant I had to install every single icon in the start bar menu manually! What is causing this? How can I fix it so it automatically displays icons for newly installed items?

Nov 29, 2007I used to be able to see the little icons for the .cur and .ani files when I looked at the Cursor folder in C:Windows. The files themselves are still there and I can use them in the Mouse Pointers setting in Control Panel, but now the icons are all the same IN THE EXPLORER DISPLAY: a bland pointer with a star at the end of it on a piece of paper background. At first, I thought maybe it was a setting in Folder Options in Control Panel, but I realized it's not a matter of file associations. I don't need to open them except in the Mouse Pointers setting, which as I said works.

Aug 26, 2005I ran adware and spybot s&d it found a trojan horse when it removed the files i restarted my comp and i cant get icons on desktop or the taskbar to show up all i can do is use the task manager with new task. I tried messing with msconfig and doing system restore to the last working configuration and it didnt work. I tried creating a new windows user acct it didnt work either.

Oct 24, 2008I've been using XP SP2 and have never had a problem with thumbnail view in windows explorer - I turn it on, it shows me pretty thumbnails of any images, movies, etc in the folder. A few days ago, I noticed that it had suddenly stopped working for image files - video and html files still get a preview, but not images. It stopped working about the time when I installed an old version of Photoshop (7.0.1, the only one I had laying about for a quick job I needed it for...), and my efforts on Google seem to imply that it may be the culprit

Mar 15, 2005I installed America OnLine's new V9 "Security Edition", which has its own toolbar (called a deskbar). It comes with a warning that sometimes it makes the Windows XP Toolbars disappear.It also has a procedure for how to fix that by uninstalling the AOL Deskbar (which didn't work for me).Overall this AOL version was problematic so I uninstalled it and went back to regular AOL V9 which works fine (but I haven't been able to get the XP toobars thing fixed).I can enable the QuickLaunch Toolbar the normal way (right click on the taskbar, then Toolbars, Quicklaunch) and I also did it by right clicking Start then Taskbar then Properties and clicking the checkbox telling it to show the quicklaunch, but it never stays enabled when I reboot.

In many applications, when I go to "File Open", I am presented with a default view of pictorial icons, rather than text listings of the files directory. This did not used to happen in earlier versions of Windows. Is there a way to stop this, so that I would only ever see a List or Details view, and never a pictorial representation of the files?

Hard To Classify - Icons Stop Functioing
May 16, 2007In the past several weeks I have experienced a very peculiar problem with my Windows XP pro machine.All of a sudden, my icons (shortcuts) on the desktop stop functioning. I click ? nothing happens. After the first reboot it works for a while and then stops again. When that happens again, the computer doesn?t boot at all ? not even in safe mode.I boot the machine using a CD ROM - David?s Ultimate Boot CD, and then I can access the hard drives, internet etc. as if everything is OK. At this point my only recourse is to reinstall Windows, which I did.

Mar 7, 2007it happened was my "mcafee security center" ( anti virus software ran out ) so I un-installed it then re-installed it hoping it would work again however it never as the yearly expire date was up had to renew it but i choose not to and downloaded "avg anti virus ,avg anti spyware , spybot s&d , ad-aware "(Free software) instead i ran all scans from them scans show nothing found but i noticed looking at "cursor" the hourglass/egg-timer was flashing/blinking on and off all the time and still does to this day flash's/blinks 2-3 times every second never stops i also noticed sometimes i can not access stuff from PC say i click on a icon on desktop nothing happens doesn't open it right click on it gives options to open ectHowever they wont work , even going to start menu click something nothing will open like any program or anything u want to run however this has only happened a few times most of the time things seem to be working normal apart from the flashing hourglass next to cursor it wont stop flashing from the moment you start using PC
Trunning The Desktop & Quicklaunch Toolbar But Everytime Reboot?

Nov 18, 2004Major virus infection on computer resulted in fdisk and reformat. I used Win 98SE to fdisk and reformat, as I couldn't for the life of me find a format on the Dell Operating reinstallation CD. (could be first mistake)
Used Win 98 SE startup diskette to start system w/CD rom support.
Navigated to D: Drive which containe the XP OS reinstallation. Navigated to I386 folder and typed WINNT to begin reinstalling files.
Start WIn XP setup and began copying files to HD.
Screen shows: The MS-DOS based portion of setup is complete. Setup will now restart you computer. After your computer restarts, WIN XP Setup will continue. Remove floppy, etc.
Computer restarts - did inspection of system, shows Win XP Setup, loading files (drivers, controllers, etc.)
Starting windows - Welcom to Setup:
1. Setup - press enter
2. Repair (using Repair Console)
3. Quite - F3
Pressed enter
Next message:

I have looked on MS site for the error code and think I understand that the problem is either a hd controller device driver is not installing from the Dell Reinstallation CD and therefore stops the installation of the software. How I can possibly extract and install the driver setup may be looking for.

All My Ram Not Showing Up?
Jan 1, 2009I am using Windows XP Media Center, and i have 4 gigs of ram in my laptop, but it shows up as 2.6 when i right click my computer and check, but if i check my bios it says 4gb, if i install 64 bit XP it shows me as 4gb, what could be causes this? am i getting the full 4gbs?
