Jul 25, 2005
When I open the Computer Management...Computer Management System tool Shared Folders Open Files I have the headers Open File, Accessed By, Type, # Locks, etc
What is the real meaning of # Locks?
When I click the 'my computer' icon in windows xp it takes a while to load, upwards of 20 seconds to display my hdds etc. I made some changes to services.msc last week in an attempt to speed up my machine, any thoughts on something I may have disabled which would result in this?
The problem is that when I access certain sites IE/Firefox just shuts down, no error message, no warning just snaps shut. Any time I access EZ board chat rooms or any page but the home page from the Fort Worth Rowing Club I have had it happen on other sites but I don't remember the names.
On Msn Messenger, a friend sent me a file containing pictures. when i opened the file, my computer froze up, and than sent the file to everybody that was loggen in to msn. After running Multiple scans , Norton Antivirus coulnd find anything wrong. But my computer constantly freezes and send a file containng a virus to everybody online. I was told i might have a worm.
I willl start with the most important one. Outlet Express. I open it and it cl;oses on its own before a message can even be selected. Just started doing this this morning. I rebooted and no change.
When i double click on a folder to open it, or single click of the start menu, it brings up a search, rather than the contents of the folder. How do i change it back so that just by clicking or double clicking opens the folder rather than bringing up the search window?
When I click on a desktop icon it opens the Windows Installer with a message that says "preparing to install". In about two minutes my documents will open, or I can re-click on "My documents" in about 5 seconds and it will open immediately and a second copy of "My documents" opens in about 5 minutes. This is a Dell 300m laptop with XP pro. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with a Dell technician who, I think, finally hung up on me when he was stumped. I tried to reinstall Windows from the disks provided by Dell but I got an error message that said the copy of XP was older than the one currently installed
All the folders on my computer are now opening into a new window with the Search function. I have to right-click and choose open to get into my folders. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
I double click on a Jpeg it opens in Windows Paint instead of the Windows Fax and Picture viewer as it has always done.BMP and GIFS still open correctly When I check under properties it states that Windows Picture and Fax viewer is the programme it opens with and that is highlighted in the drop down column. I can open them when I use the right click drop down menu and select preview, then it will open in the viewer. I have ran Norton Antivirus, spybot, Ewido, adaware. I have tried changing the Jpegs to open with paint, then changing it back again, still won't budge.
When i open a folder search pops up and doesnt open the folder, when i right click on the file "search..." is in bold. How do i change this to open the folder directly
I have a graphic aplication, but when I try to open it the pc give the message (you need at least 3 mb of virtual memory) how I can increase that kind of memory?

I am operating Windows 2000 XP on an almost new Dell and my computer keeps locking up. I can be in the middle of a program and suddenly the screen will turn blue with diagonal lines all over it. There are no error messages that come up nor have I had any in the past. The power button will not respond when I push it so I have to physically unplug my hard drive from the wall outlet to reboot. It used to only happen once a month but lately it's been once a week.
I can't for the life of me figure out how to turn this function off. Every 15 minutes or so, if left idle, the computer goes to this screen that says "Unlock Compter" and below it says "This computer is in use and has been locked".How in the world can I turn this function off?!? It is annoying me to no end!
Hey my computer is totally locking up for no reason i had almost this same problem with my last computer but only the mouse would freeze, now on this new computer mouse and keyboard lock up and usually if im playing music or whatever that will freeze up too no other way to get out of this is to shut it off manually. It does this at random times when nothing but internet explorer or msn is open or sometimes it does it when i have something like bittorrent open i took it to a computer store and he booted it up it didnt freeze when he tryed it so he thought it was ok(i dont think it is) he said try a new keyboard and mouse.
When I run DEVMGMT.MSC or SERVICES.MSC they pop up for a second and auto close. No problem opening REGEDIT. I ran sfc /scannow successfully without it solving the issue. Can anyone suggest a solution?
I am trying to uninstall a program and it says I need to have administrator or power user privileges to uninstall the program. When I set my computer up I set it up so it assumes I am logging on and I am the administrator. How do I get the privilege? It says I am an administrator in computer management, local users and groups.
When I go to 'manage' computer to format an extra dive [magicjack], that option is grayed out. How can I get that option to be notgrayed out anymore? I've spent about 3 hours with Magicjack's customer service & they can't help me with this. Also my 'removable drive' is gone. How can I add it back?I have windows xp model 2400, service pack 2.
I've had some trouble last week were I got the BSOD, due to some problem with the registry, I couldn't find a solution and so bought a new SATA hard drive and installed XP on it (as i couldn't reinstall it on my old one for fear of losing all my files etc). Now however, after moving all my files into the new harddrive (where XP now seems to be), I want to format the old C: drive but the computer management console isn't allowing me to as the "system" partition is still on the old C: drive. In short, is there anyway to move that partition to the new F: drive where the boot partition is?
I have been trying for quite a while to load a new xp pro with service pack 2 .As soon as the files are loaded and the pc restarts the pc hangs. After trying this for about 20 times I decided to try something else. The PC had win98 on it so it was working .i loaded the pc with winxp pro but an older edition. It does not include any service packs .and seems to be running fine. Then I loaded servicepack one and still no problems with XP After loading the second service pack the pc hanged again at the startup.
I have just removed Vista from my PC and re-formatted my hard drive, before installing XP. When I try to playback any video, it opens the player, tried both mediaplayer and nero showtime, then freezes the entire PC. Have loaded all the usual codecs but still no joy
When ever I start or restart my computer, this message box pops up and it says, Error loading C:sindowssystem32stlbdist.dll The specified module could not be found.I am running Windows XP Home. I upgraded from Windows ME. I know that that is not the cause. I just thought I would mention which OS I have. I think this showed up after I uninstalled Limewire, but I'm not sure.
I got my new system.. its been working like a dream, a proper gaming behemoth!Having got my 22" monitor on friday, I decided that now was the time to give it an overclock and see how it would do I used Ntune (I know I know!) and it hung a couple of times during its mucking about with clock speeds, etc I went out to sort something out in the garden, came back in and the screen had gone black during another hang.I reset the computer and on boot up windows would start up with the same black screen.
mouse stops moving and when I click a small circle appears --- Multiple clicks will usually restore the arrow -- Sometimes moving the arrow starts to move a frame which I don't want to happen.--Zone Alarm usually shows incoming and outgoing colors but will freeze and only show the ZA in lower right blue area
my computer jams every now and again for a minute or 2 depending on what i do for E.g if i press ALT and TAB to quikly change wat im doing it jams. also whenever i click on something like a folder or shorcut of a program , instead of opening the file or folder the proprties come up ( this problem is now fixed but it might be a sympton of a virus or sumthing ?).i think its cuz of a file i downloaded off the internet.
I cannot find out why the partition drive letters are not showing up in disk management but are showing in "My Computer". I can view directories and file in explorer but links and commands do not work because they can't find the paths.
Drives I connect via usb will not show up in My Computer anymore.I've tried my external HD,Flash drives, my ipod, and my digital camera. When I plug something in, Win XP plays the sound like normal but nothing happens. And the ipod charges like normal.I checked in Disk Management and none of my internal HDs are even listed My Computer still shows my 2 internal HDs C: & D: my Floppy A: and my dvd drive H:
On newly built system with a clean install of windows we are having trouble with my computer opening slowly. The box opens quickly but the drives take 20 seconds to show up. I have disabled windows image aquisition service and turned off Automatically search for network drives and folders. This computer is used to connect to three different hospitals websites with citrix and other web based portals. Is it possible that some of the active x controls that make it possible for the desktop to log in securely to the hospitals have caused this issue? If so how can I fix it without a reformat.
My computer started acting like it was possessed! The numlock and scroll lock keys beep and light up on and off continuosly; if I try to open any Windows programs, ALL of the Windows programs start to pop open all over the desktop; it won't even dial the internet connection, so I can't get online. It won't go on standby by itself, and if I choose standby on the shutdown menu, it goes into standby for about 5 minutes and then goes back to the desktop, even after I've logged off!
I am able to open any games or programs that aren't Microsoft without other programs popping open, but the numlock and scroll lock keys still flash and beep all the time. I have Earthlink ISP and use their anti-virus, pop-up blocker, spyblocker, spam filter, and firewall, along with Ad-aware and Xoftspy. No viruses or spyware are found when I run them.
