When I click the 'my computer' icon in windows xp it takes a while to load, upwards of 20 seconds to display my hdds etc. I made some changes to services.msc last week in an attempt to speed up my machine, any thoughts on something I may have disabled which would result in this?
View 6 RepliesI double click on a Jpeg it opens in Windows Paint instead of the Windows Fax and Picture viewer as it has always done.BMP and GIFS still open correctly When I check under properties it states that Windows Picture and Fax viewer is the programme it opens with and that is highlighted in the drop down column. I can open them when I use the right click drop down menu and select preview, then it will open in the viewer. I have ran Norton Antivirus, spybot, Ewido, adaware. I have tried changing the Jpegs to open with paint, then changing it back again, still won't budge.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy computer jams every now and again for a minute or 2 depending on what i do for E.g if i press ALT and TAB to quikly change wat im doing it jams. also whenever i click on something like a folder or shorcut of a program , instead of opening the file or folder the proprties come up ( this problem is now fixed but it might be a sympton of a virus or sumthing ?).i think its cuz of a file i downloaded off the internet.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently use Adobe Photoshop for much of my work, I require various specialized fonts, such as the ones done specifically for films, TV and Bands alike.
Whenever I click to go into my fonts folder, you know c:windowsfonts, it freezes,it just gets stuck there, an I need access.When this was working, downloaded fonts only worked at the time i placed them in.The .ttf file stayed in the fonts folder, but when I came logged on at another time after logging off/shuting down, the font was no longer in the drop down lists in the Microsoft programs/photoshop, and like i said was still in the fonts folder.
what i wish to do is reformat c: . But everything i click on a popup comes up saying something like this file program has no file assocation go to control panel etc....eg fdisk, c: prompt...seems like everything to do with windows.Is there anyway of getting the file assocation back. oh yeah when it starts there is a popup that comes up, with nothing in it just a few square boxes in the top left corner and of course i cant get into msconfig to see what is starting.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever i try and click on a program or open anything an error message comes up saying. windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. The only thing i can go on is the internet and things on my desktop. I also have a problem as sometimes my computer crashes and a blue screen appears.
The problem is that when I access certain sites IE/Firefox just shuts down, no error message, no warning just snaps shut. Any time I access EZ board chat rooms or any page but the home page from the Fort Worth Rowing Club I have had it happen on other sites but I don't remember the names.

After running Multiple scans , Norton Antivirus coulnd find anything wrong. But my computer constantly freezes and send a file containng a virus to everybody online. I was told i might have a worm.

In about two minutes my documents will open, or I can re-click on "My documents" in about 5 seconds and it will open immediately and a second copy of "My documents" opens in about 5 minutes. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP home SP2. I have MS Office 2003 with all updates. The problem I'm having is when I double click on any MS office file (powerpoint, word, excel, etc), it takes about 1-3 minutes to open. When I look at the task manager, the CPU is 99% idle and no task appears to be using many resources. It's not the anti-virus SW because I've removed it from the system and still have this problem. It's also not network related because I've removed it from all networks and still have the problem. If I open the program that the file is associated with (ie MS word for a *.doc file) and then select file/open, it opens fine. I don't think it's just a MS office problem, because the same thing occurs when I try to click on a weblink within a document or application. It takes 1-3 minutes for IE explorer to open and go to the web page. I think it may be due to some security patch, but I don't know which one.

Time going by, I have noticed I have installed quite some applications on my computer.I have Win XP SP2, Intel Pentium4 CPU - 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM (SSD), ATI Radeon X300 Series. I notice that booting is taking really long after I select my user account and I hear a lot of hard disk activity. I believe this can be because virtual RAM is activated, but, before going to buy some extra RAM (and SSD memories are not so cheap), I wondered if I could have fixed the issue through some start up software, or some better organisation of the user accounts (e.g. one account for gaming, one for video processing) so that only the requested processes would be loaded each time.

And also, when i double click on any of my drives in the "my computer" it pops up an error, and the right click option is again wierd, but different this time, the 1st option is autoplay, then comes open, then search then explore. Somebody told me its a bug in Windows where you clicked only once, but Windows think you have double clicked.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been trying for quite a while to load a new xp pro with service pack 2 .As soon as the files are loaded and the pc restarts the pc hangs. After trying this for about 20 times I decided to try something else.The PC had win98 on it so it was working .i loaded the pc with winxp pro but an older edition.It does not include any service packs .and seems to be running fine.Then I loaded servicepack one and still no problems with XP After loading the second service pack the pc hanged again at the startup.
