Drives I connect via usb will not show up in My Computer anymore.I've tried my external HD,Flash drives, my ipod, and my digital camera.When I plug something in, Win XP plays the sound like normal but nothing happens.And the ipod charges like normal.I checked in Disk Management and none of my internal HDs are even listed My Computer still shows my 2 internal HDs C: & D: my Floppy A: and my dvd drive H:

When I go to Disk Management, my hard drives are not listed. They are visable in My Computer. Nothing is listed except my DVD drive.The reason I was in Disk Management in the first place, I plugged in my backup external drive (500GB Seagate FreeAgent Desktop) and it did not show up in My Computer, so I thought it was a drive letter assignment issue. So I go to Disk Managment and none of my hard drives are listed!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed a new hard drive and installed a new XP Pro on it. I kept the old XP Home for some time untill I'm happy with the new installation. The old XP Home was on drive C and the new XP Pro is on drive E. I am now ready to reclaim drive C disk space and tried formatting it. However, it appers as the "system" drive, while the new HD (E) appears as "boot". I realized I wont be able to format it until I make E drive system and boot together (which usually appears as "system"). Eventually, I would prefer that the new disk will be labeled C
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem. Suddenly and for no apparent reason, my DVD burner (D drive) and CD burner (E drive) do not show up in my computer any more. I looked in device manager and they both show up but have yellow triangles with black exclamation points next to them. The message for them is something to the effect of the drivers are installed but it cannot locate the hardware. I have not tampered with them. The only thing I did was attempt to install Simple Backup and there was an error so it rolled back and uninstalled itself. After that was when I noticed the drives don't show up anymore. I have XP home on a compaq presario computer. DVD burner is HP dvd writer 300i and CD burner is a LiteOn something or other.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

F says [Active].G says nothing, just [Healthy]Major problem is that in the board also see another HD which I do not have Title of this HD is [Missing] with a red X on it and the description is [Failed].Its in the same size with F so I think its some problem from the time I tried set this disk as primary in order to put xp in it (its a sata on an A8V Deluxe which requires f6 etc etc).So... may i choose delete this fake disk?PS. I was having trouble with installing flash for chrome.It always reads the wrong disk because I put in a new HD.My main one is F:/, but flash tries to install on C:I tried to change the drive letter but disk management "fails to initialize" and thus won't start. I tried MS's solution (regsvr32 c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll) but I get an error LoadLibrary("c:winntsystem32dmdskmgr.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

c:windowssystem32dmremote.exe:*:enabled and I've also added port exceptions for ports 135 and 445 and I'm still unable to use Disk Manager to manage remote computer.I keep getting the following message: The Disk Management console failed to conect to the remote computer because the Disk Management remoting sevices is not in the Windows Firewall exception list. Add the Disk Management remoting service (dmremote.exe) to the Windows Firewall exception list and try again.
Windows won't let me partition it from disk management. I'm at lost here. I'm trying to start fresh with a new install of win xp. Got to the setup part where i choose which parition to use, but it says I can't delete the partition because there are necessary files needed on it etc. etc... So I get a win98 boot disk to try to manually format and get to the A: prompt, and it wont recognize my C:
View 3 Replies View RelatedSystem crashed last night with a Kernel Stack Inpage Error, but restarted fine ... while diagnosing, I tried to get in to Disk Management through Admin Tools/Computer Management, and received the error, "Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager service". I checked, and the service was disabled (why?), so I set it for manual and restarted it, still received the error.Oddly, I was able to start it from a command prompt, which then allowed it to start from Admin Tools. What just happened here? Is that service normally disabled? If not, what would cause it to become disabled? Could a virus, worm, or rootkit have snuck in?

1 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x86
2 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x64
3 - Store my Data Folders and Files separately (to do Backups from one place).
4 - Boot to Ubuntu 7.10 and alternatively
5 - Boot to Ubuntu Server
6 - Create System Backups for my Laptop (6.1), old PC (6.2) and for this new PC (6.3).
This is my wife's Lenovo T61 and I've posted this in the laptop forums. While attempting to prep for a larger hard drive, I noticed that Disk management isn't showing any HD partitions. It does show the CD ROM device. It will not display USB external hard drive partitions but will display USB CD ROM devices. Device manager and explorer will display hard drives/partitions just fine. At this same time, I found that a scheduled chkdsk /f will not run. The PC just boots normally. Defrag will not run either. I was able to run sfc /scannow plus the Lenovo "disk doctor" utility and nothing is reported to be amiss. Another broken item was system restore. It was enabled but no restore points were available.
View 17 Replies View RelatedUSB thumb drives and external HDD no longer show up in the "safely remove hardware" screen even tho they show up fine in 'my computer' and work fine with autoplay.there is nothing in the SRH screen. this happens with USB ports on the motherboard and on a USB card. The drives show in device manager. I can detect and remove the USB drives with 3rd party software like 'USB disk eject'. The drives are 'optimized for quick removal'.
I've got rid of all 'ghost' drives and hubs in device manager and related registry entries (with drivecleanup). 'plug and play' service is running. I can't think of any strange software and drivers recently installed. I've googled a lot with no results.
I have an external hdd...my xp has detected the driver for the hdd but its not displaying in disk management and also in My Computer. I can only see my C drive and cd-rom. How to resolve this coz i have important file there.

After the first repair the computer worked fine, until I installed SP2, and lost the taskbar, and couldn't fix that (you can view that thread here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...tart-menu.html. After the recent repair everything went fine until I tried to install SP2 again. I will start the computer, and windows will load. Everything is fine until the login screen appears (windows XP home ed.). The screen lasts for about 1.5 seconds and then it goes BSOD.

Also there is no right click options when I try to use them on the partitions.Check the picture attached.Probably a microsoft tech would know the answer.
