I decided to uninstall COLDFUSION from my system I confirmed yes to all those popups that say "this file is no longer needed want to delete"? during the uninstall process. Turns out I wiped out some important .dlls that windows needs to start up correctly. I am hung up on a DOS screen that reads: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows rootsystem32hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file. Where do I find the above dll and if its on the xp CD...where on the XP CD would it be?
i recently installed linux on my second hard drive but it never worked so my question is how do you turn the boot up menu back to windows instead of grub (i think) its just the hassel of having to go down the list and selecting windows??
how do i make windows "2000/nt/xp loader" the default choice on the grub 1.5 boot loader? i have 4 other choices and windows is at the bottom. i have ubuntu 9.04 and it's recovery (i have 2 sets of thse but they do the same thing). it automatically loads ubuntu 9.04 after a few seconds. How can i make it choose windows by default and maybe even decrease the timeout? (i'm willing to do this inside windows or ubuntu if needed i cannot do this from within grub).
My IE windows keep opening at slightly less than max.I know there isa trick to resize the window manually and then close it.But it still opens at less-than-max size.I've also tried opening a second window and manually resizing it and then closing the first window then the second. It still doesn't fix it.

I recieved the following message after a forced restart after windows updates were installed: "We are sorry for any inconvenience but Windows was unable to start successfully" My options are to start in Safe Mode , Last known config or normal. Safe Mode is the only thing that works. Also System Restore would not work Also System Recovery from Sony Vaio Recovery Wizard would not work
In a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?
It never would start windows normal but would in safe mode,so now i did a diskcheck and restarted now it gets hung up on the system32driversagp440.sys...at least thats the last one that pops up before it freezes.
We are trying to start a laptop but windows is not starting up properly. As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again. The cycles continues without any other options.
I have a big virus problem. I have basically every type of virus there on my computer. The most recent problem that I have is that I have use safe mode, i can't start windows up normally (windows xp home edition). My Uncle just got a Dell computer and installed a dsl modem, and after a couple of days the computer was running super slow, and a popup appeared a few minutes after startup with a 60 second timer saying that windows was going to shut down. I thought that it was Spyware/adware so I installed and ran Adaware, and I deleted over 380 infected files, and ran AVG 7 virus scan and detected trojan viruses. I saw that his internet security settings were set at the minimum level and the firewall was disabled, so I enabled the firewall and raised the bars on the security levels, but there's still a major problem.
I was working on my computer last night and everything was fine. This morning I turned it on and got a message saying windows couldn't start because the file windowssystem32configsystem was missing or corrupt. The only option that I seem to have is to reformat and reinstall all the software which will wipe out all of my files. It have weeks of work on that computer. I sometimes back up online but it's been a long time since I've done that. Is there someway that I can fix it without a total reinstall?
I have Sony Viao VGN-S460 with windows xp home edition already installed. My computer froze so I restarted my laptop and get this screen: We apologize, windows did not start successfully.

I want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.
Can anyone tell me how to configure windows media player 10 to work from behind the windows firewall which was installed when i updated to windows service pack2? I am using windows xp and explorer6.0 with verizon dsl 3.0 internet connection.
when opening windows xp the screen gets to the windows xp with the little green light going back and forth in the rectangle box. this green light goes back and forth 3 or 4 times then freezes and you cant go further then that.
I went to try to install windows xp onto a computer that already had windows on it. I did not boot from the cd. To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. I've been in msconfig and looked at boot.ini but that didn't help
I had to put windows 2000 on my moms PC, which is part of a network, and now EVERY computer on the Network sees an "Internet Gateway". WHY???? The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.
Install the disc before connecting the ipod anyway i installed the disc and then restarted the pc however when the pc boots up it says something along the lines of. windows failed to start. This could be caused by hardware or software that has recently been installed.
Recent hardware or software change might have caused this If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem choose start windows normally
My Dell desktop will not boot up. I had closed the lid thereby putting it on standby when I tried to go back it was in a state of limbo, it wouldnt come on nor shut off. So I pulled the battery to shut it off which I have done before. When I tried to boot up I got a message of. Windows could not start
My computer is currently running Windows XP Home. When i turn it on i get the error message that reads: Sorry for the inconvenience but windows did't start successfully. It then asks me whether i want to start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, or start windows normally. If i i choose to use the last known good configuration, windows begins to load but then a blue error screen appears and the computer restarts quickly again to the same screen. If i choose any of the other options the computer restarts and eventually ends up at the windows loaded unsuccessfully screen. I would just use my Windows XP disk to either repair or reinstall windows but i use an external cd drive and it does not appear in the boot sequence.
I have a old pc, after formatting and installing windows on it successfully, only to restart half way and freezes up. someone help me out, about what to do, every help will be highly appreciated. thxsUpdate: Just tried to put winxp disc in and start a reformat but again nothing happens and it just goes back to the same screen mentioned above.
I was recently given a compaq sr1330nx desktop computer that didn't work. After putting in a different power supply it started right up. It hadn't been used in over a year and I downloaded the 62 high priority updates needed and installed them. The next morning when I started it up it was very slow and unresponsive. I ran the error check utility and defragmented the hard drive. Still very slow and inconsistent. Then is when I probably screwed up and reset the 2 jumpers on the motherboard and went into the bios and checked "reset configuration". Now all I can get is a line of white bars across the bottom of a black screen and the message "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:windowssystem32configsystem. You can attemt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom. select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
