Does Not Start Up Properly - Power Failure Start Windows Normally
Aug 18, 2008
We are trying to start a laptop but windows is not starting up properly. As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again. The cycles continues without any other options.

Or at least I think so, there was a whopper of a lightning storm and then Windows wouldn't start up the next morning. I've been trying to trouble shoot and am at a standstill close to the answer.
It will start in safe mode
I cannot restore it using the disc
I disabled several things in device manager and that didn't help
I tried the repair from disc as well, doesn't work
I finally reformatted - still doesn't work.

I have a problem I have a new system installed Windows XP professional. Everything was ok till yesterday. I just have a few more things to install and I have the computer plugged into the 4 plug UPS so if the power goes down the computer has 5 minutes to shut down. Well the hydro went off yesterday for a few seconds and all of the other computers came back up but the new one. It was booting into Windows got to the Windows logo and the bar going across loading then after 10 minutes still sat there. I decided to re-boot to see what was wrong as I am a computer tech. Nothing so I went into safe mode that was fine got out of there same thing logo looks like it was starting nothing. I did put in the Windows XP disk thinking to just do a repair still the same thing. I get the Windows screen like it is loading nothing. Go back to safe mode and here is what it says and there is no disk at all in the drive. Can not run setup from Safe Mode rebooting computer.

When i turn on,first Windows screen appears, then a blue screen blinks, then hp screen, then a blank page with cursor on the top left, then a screen with the message"we apologise for the inconvinience but Windows did not start successfully.there was a hardware or software problem.I tried to run it in Safe mode, Windows normally, last known configuration but no luck......Then someone suggested to Get into the Recovery Console by making a Recovery CD with ISO image but the machine is not responding to any of it.Is it with CD/DVD ROM drive or any major hardware problem???...I ran a self hard drive test and it seemed fine

In a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?

I can't boot my computer after a power cut happened. It just goes in circles asking me to start up normally, or use the last configuration that worked. Neither of which work.I'm using Windows Xp with Sp2 and had installed a new version of ZoneAlarm but hadn't restarted the computer when the power cut happened.I had also changed the boot screen using Logon UI Boot Randomizer, and it's the changed version of windows that doesn't start. If i select the original windows, it starts fine. Is there a way to delete the chaged version (with the modified boot screen) or make it work again? At the moment, everytime i start i have to select the original version, which seems to work fine.

Almost every single time I boot up, Windows doesn't log in correctly (explorer.exe I believe), none of my taskbar icons appear and the mouse cursor just keeps spinning when moved over it. I have to log-off using the task manager then re-log in, upon which Windows logs in normally and everything starts normally.

I have tried them all "start windows normally", press f11, start with last configuration etc.windows starts for a few seconds, then it cuts itself off and back to former screen.so i never get anywhere. I tried taking battery out, leaving laptop time to cool down.nothing.

My Windows XP Home Edition will not load up, I will start my computer and straight away I notice that it takes a little bit longer to detect my secondary Master device, after about 20 or so seconds it finaly loads up to a point where it will say Windows XP did not start properly. I have selected all of the SAFE mode options, it loads lots of drivers until it gets to a file called MUP.SYS and then it hangs there and does nothing more. I have also tryed to start windows normaly and with settings that last worked both of which froze at the Windows XP loading screen.
I have inserted a Windows XP CD that I loaned from a friend and I have tryed to reinstall Windows XP via setting the CD drive to load first in the BIOS. The CD seems to load files properly untill it reads "Setup is loading Wndows" and again it hangs here and does nothing more. I have tryed everything and I have now run out of idea's, I have read other forums that have said that its to do with the Hard Drive, I have replaced mine and still no change.

My HP Laptop is about 4 years old, but still works great... until a few days ago. When i start it up, the loading screen comes up and finishes. Then it goes black, and stays black. I CAN however boot in safe mode (not safe mode with networking tough), and it works fine. I am also having problems finding my CD, but have the License Code. So a No-CD Answer would be wonderful

computer for a few days you would press the start button on the tower and it wouldn't start right away but then after a few sec would come on. Yester day I tried it twice I pressed the start button on the tower and you could hear the power supply try to start but would die and the computer would not come on. so about the thired time press the button and nothing, would even try to start. I figured it was the power supply. I put a tester on the power supplyh and it said it was bad, so I bought a brand new one put it in and it still would n't do anything just dead.I tested the new one and my tester sasid it was bad, I changed it for another one and the store I bought the 1st one from tested the 1st one and there tester showed it was good, so my tester must not be working.

My computer after, we believe, a power surge during the wee hours of the morning a week ago can no longer totally boot up. Once powered on, it will go to a black screen, detailing how windows did not start properly. And something about it being due to or causing a hardware or software change.

Ok this error will only pop up only about 3/4 of the time I attempt to go into Windows. Right after the windows boot screen finishes I'll get a blue screen of death for windows xp, and it says a bunch of numbers and stuff then at the bottom there is a file called tbcwdm.sys. This just started happening in windows, and I can't write the code down because the screen will dissapear in a matter of seconds and reboot the computer.

I am using XP home and when I start my laptop the following message came up: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): SystemRootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.
I followed the link from other threads to the microsoft site explaining repairing the registry using the installation disk. I got the computer from my brother in law and do not know where the installation disks are. Also it was factory installed and the microsoft instructions say they do not work with OEM software. Is there a way to fix this without the disk? If I find the disk Dell supplied will it work since it it was not a XP install disk?

I usually don't turn my computer off, but let it hibernate. This never caused problems, but lately, everytime after about a week, Windows became unstable. Part of the text disappears from the screen, like some text from web pages and the text 'start' on the start menu. When I try to start programs, I get various error messages, like 'The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d)'. When I close some programs, the system seems to work again for a couple of minutes, but then the problems start again.
(It might also occur when i do not use hibernate, but keep my computer on for a couple of days, but I didnt try this.) It looks like Windows is running out of memory or running out of some other resource? How can i check which resource is exactly running out? Physical memory is 458,224 kB, of which at the time of the problem about 84MB free and 114 MB system cache - not very different from the values during normal use.Kernel memory during time of the problem is total 188 MB - a lot higher than during normal use. However, I don't know what kernel memory is, how to reduce it, and whether it might cause this kind of problems. I am using Windows XP Home SP3. Processor is AMD Sempron 3000+.

Windows XP Media Edition and here's my problem. I told XP to use the CHKDSK utility on startup, but whenever it reaches step 4 37%, it just freezes and I'm forced to restart the computer. When I restart, the same thing happens. Is there any shortcut to bypass the CHKDSK? This all started because whenever I ran a full virus scan or spyware scan I would get a BSOD In_Page_Kernel_Error... So i tried running them in safe mode and then I would get a IQL BSOD. Eventually I decided I should try to run CHKDSK and it has lead me to this dead end. If I could just figure out a shortcut to bypass it, I would be happy because the computer actually works fine, I just suspected spyware so that's why I began attempting to disinfect it.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

Ever since a power failure yesterday, my computer is not booting 100% of the way - it seems to stall at the end after loading desktop etc, can't see anything missing but I am unable to do anything. Nothing opens when clicked on. It works perfectly in Safe Mode with Networking.
I checked Device Manager and found 3 things highlighted:
HID Non-user input Data Filter
HID Non-user input Data Filter in HID section, and
WAN Miniport (IP) in Network Adaptors.
I do not have a wireless network, only a hard-wired one, so not sure what that is about.
