Making Windows The Default Boot On Grub 1.5?
Aug 6, 2009
how do i make windows "2000/nt/xp loader" the default choice on the grub 1.5 boot loader? i have 4 other choices and windows is at the bottom. i have ubuntu 9.04 and it's recovery (i have 2 sets of thse but they do the same thing). it automatically loads ubuntu 9.04 after a few seconds. How can i make it choose windows by default and maybe even decrease the timeout? (i'm willing to do this inside windows or ubuntu if needed i cannot do this from within grub).

I've been trying to solve this for a few days now and I'm not having any luck. I don't have access to a PC running a windows OS or I'd just set up the flash drive there.

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

I had to re-install the boot manager GRUB Now, Windows does not boot no more and even worse I cannot even boot from CD either (-> recovery console)"Examining your hardware." flashes shortly and then the screen turns black and that's it. I think a fixmbr may help but since I cannot boot from CD. it's a notebook and I have a recovery partition at the beginning of the hard drive.

I have a computer with an 80GB Hard Drive on it. This HDD had XP on a 50GB Partition, and Linux on a 30GB Partition, installed so I can choose between either operating system with Grub when I boot up. Well, I didn't want Linux anymore, so I used Norton Partition Magic to delete the Linux partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB loads and it just says 'unknown filesystem' and then 'GRUB rescue'.Obviously I didn't realize the GRUB started with Linux first, so now I'm screwed and can't boot.

My boot.ini files on my 2 intentional operating systems have been modified to look, it seems to me, identical (see 1st attached thumbnail). First 2 for the intended ini, the second the old improper, though still currently functional, boot.ini.old. Both of these are on separate partions on the first internal hard drive, and I have tried turning off my 1 external during boot-up as well as disabling my 2nd internal on the "boot settings", with the same results. The default should be the "Graphics" system, according to the Boot.ini

I am a pc technican, I have noticed that over the years whenever i have a particular brand of pcs sometimes some pcs boot up much faster than others, sometimes even when the spec is better on some systems, i have a dell pc here i have been asked to replace a psu on, i am just wondering why exactly it boots up really fast, in comparison to some new builds i build sometimes, with the latest components faster ram etc, maybe it`s the hard drives some of these are using?

I want to dual-boot this machine with Windows XP, and the reason is: Vista is making Halo:Combat Evolved (my favorite online game) very slow at 20fps. This may be nVidia's fault, but people who use XP and have the same (or closely similar) hardware and drivers as me don't have this problem. I have 50GB of free hard drive space. Windows Vista is my current OS. I love Halo so much I am willing to drop some more cash into my computer to dual boot with Vista and XP so I can play it s'more.

I have a problem with a Windows XP installation. The problem arose when I attached a SATA SSD with Windows 7 on it, intending to check whether the SSD had failed. The computer booted up into XP but I couldn't see the SSD in My Computer. When I restarted the computer, I received GRUB (the Linux bootloader) error 22. It is possible that Linux was active on the Windows XP HDD at some point, but it is long gone and I didn't expect to find GRUB controlling the boot. I switched off and removed the SSD drive so that the computer would, so I thought, be in the state in which it was when I approached it. I switched it on and got to GRUB error 21. I inserted my Windows XP CD-ROM and restarted, selecting the repair option. I ran CHKDSK, FIXBOOT and FIXMBR and restarted but now I get error INVALID SYSTEM DISK. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

A friend's Acer laptop, running XP, has a Broadcom Ethernet card which is disabled at boot. I'm told it started this a few weeks back, so I don't know if it's related to a M$ patch. Although I can turn the driver on in the device manager it doesn't want to remember the driver state when rebooted. Last time, when I thought I'd fixed it by disabling unneeded startup programs, I'd stumbled over a program advertising ability to set drivers to be enabled at boot but I don't want to buy a program to solve a simple problem. atm there are just Kaspersky and the Windoh$ firewall plus a few Acer and normal startup programs obvious. How do I set the Ethernet's driver to enabled from boot?..and is it clear what might have triggered this?

I want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

I went to try to install windows xp onto a computer that already had windows on it. I did not boot from the cd. To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. I've been in msconfig and looked at boot.ini but that didn't help
