Making Windows Boot From A Flash Drive In Ubuntu?
Aug 15, 2009I've been trying to solve this for a few days now and I'm not having any luck. I don't have access to a PC running a windows OS or I'd just set up the flash drive there.

View 2 RepliesI just made a backup of my HD with Paragon to an external drive. That went as advertised. FIne and dandy.I now say to myself "SELF"? what will I do if my PC becomes completely hosed and will not even boot.I know. I will have a nice doorstop. Now my question is can I make a bootable flash drive to restore my backup I see the option is there but I have seen more than once researching with Google that this will not work. Seems to me doing this with CDs would require a dozen in my case. My computer does not support DVD.

how do i make windows "2000/nt/xp loader" the default choice on the grub 1.5 boot loader? i have 4 other choices and windows is at the bottom. i have ubuntu 9.04 and it's recovery (i have 2 sets of thse but they do the same thing). it automatically loads ubuntu 9.04 after a few seconds. How can i make it choose windows by default and maybe even decrease the timeout? (i'm willing to do this inside windows or ubuntu if needed i cannot do this from within grub).

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy antivirus detected krag.exe and removed it from my flash drive. However, when I try to open the drive by double-clicking on the corresponding drive (F in My Computer, a pop-up window appears saying "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:". I chose windows explorer since it's what you use when trying to explore or browse through files.
The problem is, the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out and can't be checked/ticked. So, I have to keep pointing the "open with" pop-up box to explorer.exe whenever I want to browse the files in my flash drive. The last attempt that I did to fix this problem was to right click on the drive letter then properties then went to the autoplay tab and chose "Open folder to view files". The "Open with" pop-up box still appears whenever i double click on the drive letter.

View 18 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu (a popular Linux distribution) a few days ago. I had Windows XP. It was fine but I had very little RAM: 256 MB (-32MB of which is shared with the video card) with which Feisty Fawn (the version 7.04 of Ubuntu is called this - it is the latest) would run really slow. So my friend suggested I use a live CD of GNOME Partition Editor, create the partitions and turn the swap on before I started installing Ubuntu. I created 3 partitions of ext3 format on my 160GB Hard disc for Root, Home and Swap which were 20GB, 10 GB, and 1 GB respectively. I had not yet installed Ubuntu.

When I try to boot from the Win XP Pro install CD (not OEM version, but complete Windows OS), I boot to Ubuntu. How can I launch the Win install and overwrite Ubuntu? Should I use http://dban.sourceforge.net/ to erase Ubuntu and then install Windows?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi was having sum problems with ubuntu when i installed it onto my second hard drive(d).on my (c)drive i have xp pro installed and on the (d) drive i had nothing until i installed linux ubuntu so i decided to remove it and i messed up because before i uninstalled it i formatted that hard drive(d),and thought that should be ok coz it must have removed it,and i'm sure it did,but now every time i turn on my pc it gives me a choice of choosing a operating system either XP or UBUNTU,how do i get rid of the ubuntu on the startup i just want it to go into xp and not give me a choice,i have looked into it and every body says i should use the fixmbr in command in recover with the xp cd running and i did that but it still doesn't remove it
i had Ubuntu (dual boot with XP), and i got both partions on 15GBs each, now that Ubuntu its gone, i thought that my XP would have back the 30GB it used to have but it doesnt, it still says it has the 15GB the partion used to have, and i deleted Ubuntu by using my XP disk and Repaired the computer doing the fixmbr thingy and i thought it was going to make it the way it was before, also, my floppy drive doesnt seem to work, it lights up, when i log in it seems like its trying to scan a floppy or something, and when i try to open up a floppy disk it freezes the window and doesnt let me work or anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.

If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.

In addition, every time I reset my computer, the entry is reset to 0. What can keep my registry from being saving this information?Running Windows XP Pro, and I have no idea how this problem even started.
