Can I copy my C drive to an external usb drive and then later boot from the usb drive if my C drive fails without having to go through the complete installation of the WinXP-pro on the usb drive? If so, what program(s) can I use to do the copy?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI purchased a us modular flash drive from tiger direct. I'm running xp home edition. I'm on cable and a friend of mine is on dial up, but he's also using windows xp home. His computer is only about 2 yrs old. Anyway, he ask me if I'd copy the free programs ad-aware and spybot, since it takes him so long to download anything, which I did. I gave him the drive, but when he tried to access it, he said it gave him an I/O error. His computer wouldn't read it. I brought it home and plugged it in and it works fine on my machine. On his he said it'd show up as a drive (H:), but when he tried to open it, it gave the error. You don't have to install any drivers (at least you didn't on mine. It came with no cd. Will this drive only work on my machine or what.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy (WinXP) system drive is dying and I need to replace it. I'd like to copy everything over from the C drive to a spare. I've tried using Norton's Ghost "clone" option to copy the drive (C->E), but after the copy and the new HD moved to master, Windows hangs at the blue startup screen. I can do a fresh install of XP, but would rather avoid that route. Questions:1. Can anyone explain a better way of doing this, list a web site(s) with instructions or recommend a better utility than Ghost? 2. Any ideas of why Windows is hanging? When it hangs, pressing ESC or Enter produces a beep, the rest of the keys are silent.

I read somewhere you can copy your drive so that way is something goes wrong with your main drive you can still boot from the backup.I have a Biostar P4M80-m4 Mobo, Windows xp is installed. I was wondering if I backed up to an external enclosure could I boot from that in case something happened to the main drive?The program I plan on used is R-Drive Image Since it has a 15d trial. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed 2 different operating systems (xp and vista) on my hard drive on seperate partitions without flagging 1 of them to boot (aka it doesnt boot at all.) I want to completely format the hole thing and just put xp on the 1 hard drive with no partitions.
My problem is that my computers CD drive has broken and it does not have a floppy drive, I want to know if theres any way i can boot a program from a USB flash drive to completely format both partitions so i can install xp (I already know how to boot xp off a USB flash drive.
I've been trying to solve this for a few days now and I'm not having any luck. I don't have access to a PC running a windows OS or I'd just set up the flash drive there.

I have 2 USB ports in the front of my system - in port 2 I have my external 500 GIG HD set as drive F:. when I plug in any USB flash drive tot he other port it makes my external HD go offline for a sec then they all come back up like nothing ever happened - Need help on this as I use my external HD to edit WWW sites and somtimes as a shared drive to my Ubuntu machine.

View 18 Replies View RelatedWell like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently added a 160Gb Maxtor 6 P160PO drive in an external hi-speed USB housing connected via a 4 port USB-2 card. I have tried copying large amounts of data (13-20Gb) but after a few minutes, I get "The drive is not ready" and it disappears from My Computer. If I disconnect it and re-connect it, it will reappear. The same happended with a 20Gb drive I swapped in, so it seems that it's not the drive. I have tried a different port to no avail.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI suspect we did not allow the write operation to finish but why this should affect boot up is beyond me.WE were copying a Folder containing word docs and gif files using right click/Send to/CD Drive. The files were copied ready for burning in the usual way and the burned to the CD.Being anxious to check the copy my partner clicked on the ready to burn icon instead of exiting and looking at the drive and the system froze. the only way was to power down and now it will not boot.It hangs on the windows logo screen (with the blue horizontal scrolling bar) and eventually the screen goes blank.I booted to safe mode and the screen hung at the end of the files loading, at least I thought it hung but in fact i had not waited long enough because on the second attempt it booted to safe mode after 4 minutes.Device manager shows no problems so rebooted as normal. Got the usual windows has encountered a problem screen and selected safe mode again. This time it took 25 minutes to boot.

I downloaded pictures from mt digital camera to my harddrive, now when I try to delete them a screen titled "copy" comes up and automactically copies the file. View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.

Of course, the non-admin users can't use drive manager to change the drive letter. Is their a way around this problem?

I can right click and assign a drive letter, but still does not appear on 'my computer'.I can still open it after assigning a drive letter in 'manage' and read/write files from a new window.I'm suspecting BIOS? View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

In addition, it gives it the same name as the mapped network drive that already exists there. When I change the name of the external drive there, it then changes the name of the mapped network drive, so again they both have the same name, although the drive letters are different. Any ideas how to make the external drive appear where it belongs in My Computer, under Hard Disk drives?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI turned the PC off to reboot when I though I was going into safe mode and went into regular mode instead. Now, it thinks one of my external drives is the C drive. On boot, I am getting a message that it cannot recognize find the system 32 windows config file (I'm paraphrasing).
I used the repair utility to get to the C prompt (which is pointed at the external drive) and checked the drive letters. I don't think the PC bios knows the hard drive is there.
I tried going into setup and reverting to factory installed configuration and that didn't change anything. I could not get it to recognize the hard drive.
I installed an a 2.5 Toshiba notebook drive in a external enclosure and I can't get XP to recognize it. The drive spins up and the light comes on to indicate it is running but nothing is shown in device manager or My computer. It also is not shown in disk management.I have uninstalled the the USB drivers through the device manager with no change after rebooting. The USB ports work fine with my other external drive.The drive was working fine in a notebook that had a

I'm using a sandisk cruzer to try to install windows on my new rig. I've got a legit windows key, and serial number. Just lost the CD a long time ago, and don't have a sata Drive. Now, there is windows XP on my current sata harddrive but it is incompatable with the system (it was installed on another system.) So sense I don't got any DVD/CD burners, or any way of buying one for a month. I looked into making my USB flash drive bootable. I've used the HP USB Disk Formating tool to format it with FAT32, and dos Windows 98 files (Command,IO.sys,MSDOS.sys) thinking this would make it bootable. Tossed A version of windows XP I downloaded SP3, onto the drive, appatempted to boot it, but when I boot the flash drive with my gigabyte X38 DS4, it just loads windows 98 for half a second and brings me to a DOS C:. which was similer when I tried to install windows 7 from my USB drive where as that brought me 2 windows ME dos screen. It seems not to autorun so I don't really know how to partition my disk, format, and install a fresh coppy of windows.
