One cannot install an OS on a USB hard drive, can one?I just tried to install x64 XP on my USB WD 250gB while having 32bit XP on my internal HD, and my computer would keep restarting. Somehow I got to the boot menu and got to start the computer and edited the boot.ini and got rid of the problem.
Can I copy my C drive to an external usb drive and then later boot from the usb drive if my C drive fails without having to go through the complete installation of the WinXP-pro on the usb drive? If so, what program(s) can I use to do the copy?
I have installed 2 different operating systems (xp and vista) on my hard drive on seperate partitions without flagging 1 of them to boot (aka it doesnt boot at all.) I want to completely format the hole thing and just put xp on the 1 hard drive with no partitions.
My problem is that my computers CD drive has broken and it does not have a floppy drive, I want to know if theres any way i can boot a program from a USB flash drive to completely format both partitions so i can install xp (I already know how to boot xp off a USB flash drive.
I've been trying to solve this for a few days now and I'm not having any luck. I don't have access to a PC running a windows OS or I'd just set up the flash drive there.
This in plain non-techie English? My Microsoft Camera and scanner Wizard no longer comes up when I insert the FLASH-CARD from my HP digital camera in the FLASH-DRIVE on my PC. Nothing happens now, It worked great for 2 years. How do I get the wizard back so I can unload my camera using the flash-card in the flashdrive?I have WXP-Home/SP2. I have a notebook computer which the hard drive is dodgy in.I have restored to the HD and after a while it Windows XP corrupted again. I don't want to spend any money on it but I would like to keep using the computer so I looked at swapping the HD with another HD (from a USB case) but one was SATA and the other PATA.So the only option left (short of spending money) is installing and booting from the USB drive? Is this possible?
My external drive has always been "E" and I have several desktop shortcuts that relate. Recently I inserted a flash drive containing home movies and after viewing and a reboot later I noticed that my external drive is now shown as "New Volume F". I would like to change it back to "E"
I had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.
I have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.
WinXP Pro SP2..Multiple drives USB, SATA, EIDE..Had WinXP on C:. Drive started getting a little flaky, created an XP parallel install on newly formatted NTFS drive F: Dual boot works fine, can choose either install to boot, (of course the F: install is newer/cleaner/faster)C: continues to go south, taking the bootloader with it.Is there some way to make the drive F: installation bootable, so that I can jettison the wonky C: drive? It's not a question of BIOS boot order, or whatever, if I disable C: and set the F: disk as the boot device, I get an error message about inserting bootable media.I'm fooling around with Acronis Disk Director and OS selector, but that doesn't seem to get me completely there.
Can anybody point me to the instructions about how to install XP Pro to a single Win98 hard drive - to make it dual boot, like Win 2k? I've been looking all around the internet and the only thing I've found is an XP dual boot on a 2nd hard drive.
On our WinXP systems (SP1 & 2), when users attempt to us usb flash drives, sometimes the O/S tries to assign an already used network drive letter to the device, making it unaccessible. Of course, the non-admin users can't use drive manager to change the drive letter. Is their a way around this problem?
Win XP Pro, USB 1.1 in front, 2.0 card added to PCI slot.I can put in a jump drive or a flash memory card reader and hear the XP bong, it does the new software found and says it's available, but It does not show on 'my computer'.I can go to manage, disk drives, and see it. I can right click and assign a drive letter, but still does not appear on 'my computer'.I can still open it after assigning a drive letter in 'manage' and read/write files from a new window.I'm suspecting BIOS? It was a machine I upgraded to XP Pro.
I just bought a new Western Digital Harddrive and a new CD drive(Aone or someting i belive). Anyways i installed both of them and i can see them in BIOS. The boot order is the following: Cd -- Floppy -- Harddrive. When i pop in the xp cd it wont boot. I know the cd works cause i tried in my labtop. What can be the problem? And how can i possibly solve it?
I have also tried Msdos disk. I put the disk in and went to my cd drive; then went to folder I386 and then typed "winnt.exe" which went into Windows Xp Setup and gave the following error "An internal Setup error has occurred. Could not find a place for a swap file. Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit."
I've never had a problem viewing videos on Firefox but now I'm told I need to install Adobe Flash Player - but I'm unable to.I did a system search for AFP but nothing shows up. Does this mean I don't have it on my computer? How could I see videos before this past week but can't now? I have no problems with IE, which I use occasionally but Firefox is my favorite.
I installed gentoo on my primary hard drive and have boot, swap and root partitions on it and they take up the whole drive. I want to install windows on the secondary hard disk but it is saying it needs a compatible partition on the primary drive but it is already full!
I cant install Flash Player 9 on my computer at work, it is running windows xp. I can install other programs like Google earth, but the installer for Flash Player 9 asks for admin priviligies. actually it doesnt even ask it just says you do not have admin rights. My questions is, is there another way around it?. I have downloaded the program to the computer but just cant open it to install. Maybe there is a trick or maybe another version of flash player that doesnt have the install searching for admin rights first like Google Earth.any Flash Player will do. If anyone can maybe find a version that I can install or maybe a trick I can use to install it. My boss is on vacation untill after the new year, and nobody in my office has the abbility to log on as admin on my office computer.
I'm using a sandisk cruzer to try to install windows on my new rig. I've got a legit windows key, and serial number. Just lost the CD a long time ago, and don't have a sata Drive. Now, there is windows XP on my current sata harddrive but it is incompatable with the system (it was installed on another system.) So sense I don't got any DVD/CD burners, or any way of buying one for a month. I looked into making my USB flash drive bootable. I've used the HP USB Disk Formating tool to format it with FAT32, and dos Windows 98 files (Command,IO.sys,MSDOS.sys) thinking this would make it bootable. Tossed A version of windows XP I downloaded SP3, onto the drive, appatempted to boot it, but when I boot the flash drive with my gigabyte X38 DS4, it just loads windows 98 for half a second and brings me to a DOS C:. which was similer when I tried to install windows 7 from my USB drive where as that brought me 2 windows ME dos screen. It seems not to autorun so I don't really know how to partition my disk, format, and install a fresh coppy of windows.
Someone has a Dell GX620 box and when they put a thumb drive into the box it does not show up. You hear a little ding as if it is being recognized but nothing happens. I do not see any yellow marks in the device manager. When I took the same thumb drive and put it into another box it shows up.
About every 10 seconds I get a message on my screen asking if I want to install Adobe Flash Player. I don't but can't find a way to get rid of this annoying message. I have Windows XP.
I can't get the streaming videos to work when viewing pages from the internet. I have installed QuickTime 7.0.3. Instead of seeing the videos, a faded QuickTime symbol with a question mark appears. I am assuming that there is a plug-in problem, but can't seem to get it to work. I tried reinstalling Macromedia Flash as well, but it does not install properly. I get an error message asking me to make sure I am connected to the internet, when I already am.
A 4gb flash drive and I was wondering if it would be wise to install WinXP on it. How do you make it bootable? Could you create a BartPE disk on it and use that?

How can I unformat a flash drive? I formatted it to make it bootable to try to run feather linux which didn't work. Anyway, I am trying to get it back to where it was before. I tried HP's usb format utility, but it doesn't see it as it won't even show up in my computer. it does show up as a storage device to unplug but that is all.
I purchased a us modular flash drive from tiger direct. I'm running xp home edition. I'm on cable and a friend of mine is on dial up, but he's also using windows xp home. His computer is only about 2 yrs old. Anyway, he ask me if I'd copy the free programs ad-aware and spybot, since it takes him so long to download anything, which I did. I gave him the drive, but when he tried to access it, he said it gave him an I/O error. His computer wouldn't read it. I brought it home and plugged it in and it works fine on my machine. On his he said it'd show up as a drive (H:), but when he tried to open it, it gave the error. You don't have to install any drivers (at least you didn't on mine. It came with no cd. Will this drive only work on my machine or what.
I have just purchased a 256 M.B. U.S.B. flash memory drive. It supports password protection. BUT how do you get this to work or be enabled?. It didn't come with any instructions and the website didn't help either. I want to put private information on this flash drive and lock it(password protect it). It's not a giant problem, but any help would be fantastic.
