How To Install Primary Hard Drive Boot Swap And Compatible Partition?
Mar 20, 2007
I installed gentoo on my primary hard drive and have boot, swap and root partitions on it and they take up the whole drive. I want to install windows on the secondary hard disk but it is saying it needs a compatible partition on the primary drive but it is already full!

I have a computer that Im trying to fix, the only way to input to the computer at this point and time is the hard drives. I have a working computer obviously. So could I take the hard drive out of the broken computer, give it two partitions, copy the windows install to one partition, start the the install in the broken computer from that partition and install that onto the second partition? Ive heard of this being down but I am no expert.

I had a two seperate versions of windows installed on two seperate hard drives, when i turn the computer on it asks me which one i want to boot from. well the second hard drive is now dying and somtimes it tells me DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT BOOT DISK AND PRESS ENTER. now this only happends when the second hard drive doesnt work. I have tried to just unplug the second drive to see if it would boot off of the original copy on the first drive but i get the same thing.

I've purchased a WD 500gb SATA HDD to replace the near-full WD 80gb EIDE drive. My motherboard supports SATA and using XP's disk manager I've partitioned the new drive as E: and all is well with XP recognizing both drives. I've used Ghost 9.0 to export all of the data and files to the new drive, as well as making backup image files on DVD disks. The problem is when I remove the old EIDE drive and try to boot, XP hangs up and gives me the "blue screen of death". If I put the old drive back in, life's good again. I'm assuming that XP is hanging up because my SATA drive is still labeled E:, and XP's disk manager won't let me change E: to C:, or at least I can't figure out how to do it. I've got two questions: Has anyone used Ghost to export data from one disk to another disk, and is it OK to assume the transfer got all of the files required to make a boot disk? And, is there a work-around of some sort to make XP recognize my SATA drive as C: and boot from it?

I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.

I created a mess (but I'm learning more each day), and after a week got it going at least, but on boot got messagae "primary hard disc drive 1 not found" which required clicking F1 to continue. I ended up reinstalling XP, got everything up and running, but still have the HD message at each boot. I've passed all of the diagnostics in Set-Up, and found nothing on any of the troubleshooting sites that helped. Set-up says: Primary Drive 0 - Hard Drive; Primary Drive 1 - Unknown Device; Secondary Drives 0 adn 1 are both CD-ROM Readers. Everything works just fine, but I'd like to figure the drive problem. I had to create a partition for the reinstall - had no choice.

My problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......

i plan to format my computer again and this time i plan to split my primary partition before i format. When i go to format i want to format only the active partition with windows in it.I have two questions. This trick does work right? the partition i created in windows using magic partition 8 won't be formated along with the active partition right? I plan to backup everything on my second partition. When i created the second partition i had two options. to either make it a logical partition or a primary partition. I chose primary partition. would that work?i plan to install windows xp pro sp2.

I just bought a new Western Digital Harddrive and a new CD drive(Aone or someting i belive). Anyways i installed both of them and i can see them in BIOS. The boot order is the following: Cd -- Floppy -- Harddrive. When i pop in the xp cd it wont boot. I know the cd works cause i tried in my labtop. What can be the problem? And how can i possibly solve it?
I have also tried Msdos disk. I put the disk in and went to my cd drive; then went to folder I386 and then typed "winnt.exe" which went into Windows Xp Setup and gave the following error "An internal Setup error has occurred. Could not find a place for a swap file. Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit."

I have a Dell Power Edge server with a C: drive that is too small. The RAID array is about 40GB but only 9 GB was given for the C: drive and it has run out of space so I cannot install service packs, extra software, etc. The remaining space is an F: drive with the "data" on it. What method should I use to extend the partition, I am thinking of just moving all of the F: drive to an external hard drive and then deleting the F: drive and trying to extend the partition in Windows Disk Manager, but I wonder if that will even work, or if there is a better tool out there to use to manage these partitions. I would like to preserve the Windows installation and everything on the C: drive if at all possible. I dont care if I have an F: drive, if I can just get a big enough C: drive, that will be fine.

I need to get a new computer with W.XP. However, I have a couple of DOS programs I can't really give up. Can I run them on WXP? Or, can I "partition" the hard dive and install MS DOS, of which I still have a floppy copy. If all of this can be done, can I print the resulting output of these DOS programs onto my old dot matrix printer?

I have Windows XP , total physical memory 2,058MB, available physical memory 1.26 gb. My hard drive is partitioned into Drive C, with 20GB capacity, 1.45 GB free space (7% ), and Drive D, with 213 GB capacity and 213 GB free space.
With only 7% free space in Drive C, I am restricted in doing some things such as defragmenting and using some programs. How do I take advantage of all this empty space on Drive D, which is just sitting there, to relieve the pressure on Drive C?

40GB HD installed recently. Unfortunately, the installer took the simplest option of making the whole new drive a single partition, instead of two of 8GB and 32GB, identical to the other drive. The organisation is therefore now as follows:That's obviously more secure than before, but I'd like to go further. I want to use DriveImage 2002 to copy the OS to F, so that in an emergency we could boot up to that instead of C. But DI won't allow that. Even though C contains only a TOTAL of about 7GB, and F is 8GB,it says there is insufficient space. It's been a long time since I last used DI, and I'm nervous about how best to proceed at minimum risk. Can I achieve my aim by using the facilities under Disk Operations to 'Redistribute free space among partitions'?
