Recently I have noticed changes in my computer. It runs Windows XP SP2 and is only a few months old. Some problems I have found is that:The "Log Off" button in the start menu is missing. I cannot switch the control panel from the "New View" to the "Classic View". My computer no longer displays thumbnail previews of pictures. When I select the "Open With" function after right clicking, the notepad always opens too.

and the missing one i care about is ThunkConnect32, used for audio
so can i either learn how add functions to the kernel32 or is there a kernel32 with all functions??
i have a program that lets me replace system files, so u dont have 2 explain that xP
I have a interesting problem. The OS buttons have gone missing. They are still there and you can click on them if you know the location but they are not displayed. For example if you bring up display properties all the tabs at the top, and all buttons on the screen are not drawn, nor are the text labels. And it is not only display properties, anything that uses the same draw tecniques no longer draw. And even stranger, it is this way even in safe mode.

I'm not sure but this could be because of the 50 something language bars selected in the tool bars option when you right click the task bar, I don't even know how this is possible or how it happened.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows XP home with SP2, keep it completely updated and run ad-aware Se (New one), Norton, AVG as well as Spybot S&D, but recently something really wierd's happened.All of the Internet explorer style buttons at the top of folder windows have dissappeared! Completely vanished without a trace. Instead, I just have a silver title bar across the top, with the Minimise, close and maximise buttons, and the name of the program. Anything underneath, (Such as an address bar, view, file etc buttons and navigational buttons) have gone.I still have them in Internet explorer, before anyone asks.. But it's most annoying, particularly when i get lost in a folder tree and can't back up without using the backspace key!

All I see is the frequency of usage of each program. I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and System Works on my PC. I called Symantec but they said, that has nothing to do with it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just received my Acer Aspire 1690 Laptop back from Acer after repairs (was freezing all the time - they replaced optical drive, hard drive and main board).I am re-installing all my software but every now and then when a dialogue bx appears with a choice of buttons to click on there is no text so I don't know what buttons do what.It doesn't happen every time but seems to happen when the dialogue boxes and buttons are not the standard windows type but ones made by the software (ie. they may be bigger than usual) - if that makes sense?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm pretty sure my entire fiasco has something to do with my registry.in my display properties i only have three tabs, screen saver, appearance, settings.in folder options "show common tasks in folders" is greyed out and "single click to open" is also greyed out and other options throughout certain settings are greyed out in speech properties the apply button is greyed out and when i click on audio input to adjust the volume the microphone volume it is way down and i bring it back up and press ok and go back and its down again.a lot of my settings are reverting back shortly after i apply them. its been like this for a couple months me being too lazy to do anything about it and before all this happened my system was working perfectly fine. then one day everything changed. i'm pretty sure its not a virus or a worm but i think something is wrong with my registry.

The missing programs aren't listed in the Uninstall registry key and I'm confident there are not viruses on the machine.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy parents tried installing NAV 2005, and also the new Turbo Tax Deluxe. On both installation occurances the installation fails. I assumed it was a virus, because you cannot get to the windows update site, or the panda active scan site in internet explorer. I have ran spybot and adaware and also AVG virus software. they all found something related to internet explorer. So i tried reinstalling norton but it fails again when it gets to the same point, subscription confirmation shows on the installation window. anyways... i have found from messing around that the search function doesn't work, also i cannot edit user accounts. this computer does not have SP2, but is up to date otherwise. I would dl SP2, because maybe this is a problem from not having it, but i cannot get to the windows update site, and the automatic update will not work as i said before.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSP3 disabled the DVD functions on my Averatec 3200 series XP laptop. The DVD drive is made by QSI. I know this is a world wide issue, but have not found a recovery. My Hard Drive failed and I replaced it and have re-loaded XP using the supplied recovery disks. The DVD functions still do not work. I'm starting to suspect that the Bios or maybe an e-prom on the DVD drive board may have been buggered, else the re-load should have brought back the DVD functions.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a similar issue to what was already stated. i had two accounts on my computer... one mine the admin and second a guest account my house mates. some how with out realising what an idiot i was i managed to change my profile from admin to normal user. However this is where things get a little different that above cause no longer is my profile shown on the computer. When i log on it doesnt give the option to even pick between the two account it only shows the guest account. Secondly it doesnt show it in normal xp fashion but shows it with a grey security box (such as work profile) with only my guest account name present. I have tried to manually type other user name and password in but it doesnt recognise it.
i can log in with the guest account but cant change anythign cause it isnt admin. it also doestn give the otpion anymore that when logging off to swtich user. it just turns off. its as though my own profile is no longer present or hidden and i cant find it anymore. I have seen it in the computer management area under users and groups but because im still under the non admin profile cant access it.
I just noticed that I don't have a spell check on my new XP SP2 box. This is due to the fact that I don't have MS Word, Excel, or Power Point installed (according to Help). My question: Is there some other way to get a functioning spell checker without one of these programs?? I have Word Perfect (Corel), which doesn't help with OE and I doubt that the free Power Point Reader would incorporate spell checking
View 6 Replies View RelatedSomething has happened to my installation of WinXP Pro. The Windows Explorer Right Click Menu has the selection "New" from which (among other things) I could chose to create a new folder.
Now when I right click and move to the "New" selection there is a dialog box the flickers on several times and then goes away and that's it. Nothing else. The dialog box goes away so fast it is hard to read but I THINK is says something about "Preparing to install".
I have never seen this problem before and haven't a clue how to fix it. Where in the registry is the stuff that controls what appears under the "New" selection? Perhaps it is corrupt in some way.
I sure hope someone can help me, this is a bummer.
I want to remove a few right click functions that have added them selfs to my menu. I have managed to remove all but a few.These only occur when i right click a folder (i got rid of the ones for files).

So i downloaded the IE7 install package on my other computer and burned to disk to install. everything was going along fine, and when prompted to restart to finsih the installation i did so..... that is when "it" hit the fan.

Some website that he used to visit regularly will not load and if they do, the layout and graphics are all messed up. Also, he can't seem to click on any buttons at all. I tried to install Norton but I can't click on the buttons to register his version. Therefore, I cannot run a virus scan to see if that is the problem.

Instead a Blank Dialogue box with with a red circleand white cross appears with yes or no buttons which both log you off back to the dialogur screen.Booted into safemode with command promp and with network support and thistime a single OK button appears again logging you off. Howevever I can get into ordinary safe mode.
