Missing Tabs Greyed Out Buttons Settings Not Being Saved
Dec 3, 2007
i'm pretty sure my entire fiasco has something to do with my registry.in my display properties i only have three tabs, screen saver, appearance, settings.in folder options "show common tasks in folders" is greyed out and "single click to open" is also greyed out and other options throughout certain settings are greyed out in speech properties the apply button is greyed out and when i click on audio input to adjust the volume the microphone volume it is way down and i bring it back up and press ok and go back and its down again.a lot of my settings are reverting back shortly after i apply them. its been like this for a couple months me being too lazy to do anything about it and before all this happened my system was working perfectly fine. then one day everything changed. i'm pretty sure its not a virus or a worm but i think something is wrong with my registry.

After a recent reinstall of the os-WinXP Pro- the screensaver tab is there but all settings are greyed out. This happened once before and was able to fix it through some start-run command but can't remember or find it again. Just had to click on screensaver.exe and click enable, or something like that.

Like many I had problems with the antivirusxp virus. Using the recommended Malware program seemed to help at first, however yesterday my Internet Explorer became corrupted. When I click on LAN settings, all the boxes are greyed out. So I assume that I'll need to reinstall Internet Explorer. I've had the pc for 4 years & cannot find the installation discs. So my question is: If I download IE onto a cd & reinstall it, will this rectify my problem?

Open a folder. Go to the tools menu, then go to the view menu. One of the boxes down on the list, says Remember Each folders View settings.I have that checked.HOWEVER, after I shut off the computer, and sometimes after I have ran any number of programs, all my folders reset to Icon view. Something is wrong with the system as it is not saving each folders view setting. Could this be due to a virus, or a corrupt entry in the registery file?

I just ran into a problem with my display properties. It occurred after a virus attacked my computer and reset the desktop to a false "blue screen of death". I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.

I am seem to be missing some of the tabs in display properties in control panel. I am running windows XP home edition. I picked up a virus and I had some other issues for a little while. I noticed when it started to infect and I pulled my internet cord in case it was going to try to get at any of my personal data. I ran my Norton 360 right away and after about an hour of running the scans and deleting some stuff, my comp started to work a lot better, but now I seem to be missing the tabs where you would change wallpaper and screen saver settings. There might be more, but I'm a casual computer user and I don't remember what the others might be Well looking at my norton history there were a few viruses:
Trojan.Fakeavalert
Trojan.Zlob times 3
Bloodhound.sonar.1
and one named simply downloader
Right now the comp seems to be working OK and all scans come back clear, so it's just the tabs as far as I know.

Windows XP Home SP1. The only tab that shows on Display Properties is Themes. Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings are missing. Both with the onboard Intel vide chipset and with an ATI PCI card plugged in for troubleshooting. I remember something like this several years ago, but can not find anything in newsgroup or Microsoft searches.

I was downloading a picture from Webshot Desktop which was automatically installed as desktop wallpaper but there was an error in the installation. As the result some of the Display Properties' Tab are missing (themes, desktop, appearance). I've copied new desk.cpl file but it doesn't fix the problem.

Display Properties, it's missing all the tabs. It always opens into the same window (I think either the Themes or the Appearance tab/window). Then I found out he still has his tabs and that you can access them with the keybaord (hitting Tab until the tabs are selected, then using the arrow keys to navigate from tab to tab), the tabs are just too small to be seen or to be accessed with a mouse. I don't think this is caused by a virus or spyware because I did a virus check and ran tons of anti-spyware software (Adaware, Spybot, Ashampoo, AVG antispyware, Windows Defender, Trendmicro) and it hardly found anything. I also don't think there's anything wrong with the registry because I ran Ccleaner. I just recently ran sfc /scannow from the command prompt and that did nothing either.
I noticed that when I have Display Properties open and I change to a certain theme and click Apply, then all the tabs will suddenly appear. I'll hit OK, which will close Display Properties, and I'll think the problem is solved. Then when I open Display Properties again, it has no tabs again. I'll change the theme again, click Apply, and suddenly the tabs are visible. But once again, they'll only be visible for as long as I have Display Properties open. When I close it and open it agian, the tabs are gone again. I think I'm onto something here and that I'm so close to resolving this.

Running Win XP Pro on a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 512MB of DDR 2700 RAM.When I right-click on the desktop to make any changes (like wallpaper, or screensaver) all I get is the Display Properties box with no tabs. The sheet displayed is Themes. The selected theme is Windows XP.If I change the theme and click Apply, the tabs all appear. But if I close & re-open the Display Properties, I'm back to Themes with no tabs. There is a similar post here already, but no one has posted any solutions.

I'm currently on another computer, oddly enough, when right clicking on the desktop and clicking on Properties only brings up the Theme selection. Plus, I've tried: Start?Run?type ?mmc? (without quotes)?File?Add/Remove snapin?click the Add button?select Group Policy?click Add?click Finish?click Close?click OK?expand Local Computer Policies?expand User Configuration?Administrative Templates?WindowsComponents?Windows Explorer and disable "Turn on Classic Shell". That does not seem to work, as I cannot do anything right at Group Policy. It seems as though Group Policy is nowhere to be found. I also tried downloading a .reg file which is suppose to "restore all display tabs" and it did not work.

I have a interesting problem. The OS buttons have gone missing. They are still there and you can click on them if you know the location but they are not displayed. For example if you bring up display properties all the tabs at the top, and all buttons on the screen are not drawn, nor are the text labels. And it is not only display properties, anything that uses the same draw tecniques no longer draw. And even stranger, it is this way even in safe mode.

none of the task bar buttons show up on my task bar when I open a program. I'm not sure but this could be because of the 50 something language bars selected in the tool bars option when you right click the task bar, I don't even know how this is possible or how it happened.

Recently I have noticed changes in my computer. It runs Windows XP SP2 and is only a few months old. Some problems I have found is that:The "Log Off" button in the start menu is missing. I cannot switch the control panel from the "New View" to the "Classic View". My computer no longer displays thumbnail previews of pictures. When I select the "Open With" function after right clicking, the notepad always opens too.

I'm running windows XP home with SP2, keep it completely updated and run ad-aware Se (New one), Norton, AVG as well as Spybot S&D, but recently something really wierd's happened. All of the Internet explorer style buttons at the top of folder windows have dissappeared! Completely vanished without a trace. Instead, I just have a silver title bar across the top, with the Minimise, close and maximise buttons, and the name of the program. Anything underneath, (Such as an address bar, view, file etc buttons and navigational buttons) have gone.I still have them in Internet explorer, before anyone asks.. But it's most annoying, particularly when i get lost in a folder tree and can't back up without using the backspace key!

I can't remove any programs because when I open the Add/Remove programs screen, the Change/Remove buttons have disappeared. All I see is the frequency of usage of each program. I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and System Works on my PC. I called Symantec but they said, that has nothing to do with it.

I'm working on a computer with multiple issues, but one of them is that no Change, Remove, or Repair buttons are showing up in Add or Remove Programs. I've found several other posts started in other websites' forums that depict the same problem, but the best anyone can seem to do is provide a workaround. Is there actually a way to fix this problem, or is my best bet to reformat?

I noticed that i'm missing nearly all tabs on properties, only general and summary tabs are visible. So at least security and compatibility tabs are missing and i need them. I noticed that when i go to Local security policy settings on Control panel>Administrative tools i get this error: and i think these problems are connected. So i need to fix that error and get the properties window working right again. Im administrator and running XP pro SP2.

I have just received my Acer Aspire 1690 Laptop back from Acer after repairs (was freezing all the time - they replaced optical drive, hard drive and main board).I am re-installing all my software but every now and then when a dialogue bx appears with a choice of buttons to click on there is no text so I don't know what buttons do what.It doesn't happen every time but seems to happen when the dialogue boxes and buttons are not the standard windows type but ones made by the software (ie. they may be bigger than usual) - if that makes sense?

My laptop is missing lots of programs under Add/Remove Programs that I know are installed. Furthermore, some that are listed don't have the Remove button next to it. The missing programs aren't listed in the Uninstall registry key and I'm confident there are not viruses on the machine.

On checking both Accounts I found that the Documents & Settings folder is missing. In Account No 1 it is present. Lately i've been battling a virus infection with a w32.spybot.worm. Thanks to symantec antivirus corporate edition (which can detect but never repair) and microsoft antispyware software i've eliminated it. Yet today a new infection popped up from a file "eraseme_12604.exe" in my system32 (i dont know how it got there). I figured I might as well enable the XP firewall to prevent new infections from happening, but when i went to the firewall settings they were set to OFF, and all options (including the ability to turn it on) were greyed out. Did the virus modify my registry somehow and how can i remidy the situation. I am running windows XP prof with sp2

I'm using a fairly new install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop.
Clicking on "New Connection Wizard", then select the "Connect to my
Workplace" option which would normally allow me to create a VPN connection,
is greyed out.
I've googled on this problem and found issues suggesting that
1. XP SP1 be re-installed (I'm upto SP2, which I've tried re-installing
without success)
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionTelephony be
deleted (have tried this, rebooted, no success)
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesRasManPPPEAP25
and 26 (tried this, rebooted, no success)
4. Find SR.INF and re-install (tried, rebooted, no change)
Having tried all of the above, I've had no joy at all. The VPN option in
"New Connection Wizard" remains greyed out.
The problem did appear to begin when I did a System Restore after a bad s/w
installation.
In addition - when I try to re-start the Remote Access Connection Manager
Service I receive Error 5: Access is Denied. I'm logged on as a Local
Administrator. I believe this is related.
