Installing Windows Xp On Machine That Wouldn't Even Start
Aug 26, 2004
how do i go about installing windows xp on a machine that wouldn't even start. it says cannot find operating system and stays there with the underscore cursor flashing. i inserted the disk anyway an tried to run it usind DOS commans, but it says that the setup file can't run from the command window. is there any other way to do it or that's it the machine is gone.
I had to reinstall windows after a virus took out all of the essential .dll files and the computer wouldn't start up, I now have a problem with some of my hardware not working. When I go into device manager the following have yellow question marks beside them:
ethernet controller multimedia audio controller video controller (VGA compatible).
The computer itself is an XC cube edition (not sure if that's a brand or not). It was supplied for a disabled student if that helps? It runs windows XP service pack 2.
I was recently given an IBM laptop, with xp pro installed on it. as i suspected the xp pro on it was not the original os and obviously will not pass genuine validation.I have the original key for the home edition that was on the machine but not the original disc. Can I use my own disc to do a fresh install but use the original key that came with the machine.
if i try to install xp pro 64 over a xp pro when booting from the xp 64 cd if i will be prompted upgrade or full installation ? if so do you recommend an upgade or a clean install, this is a new machine with win xp pro but it has AMD 64 PROCESSOR on it, so is capable for 64.
just found the web site and am hoping someone could help me as i am getting nowhere on the Microsoft web site. I have just re-built a friends machine and am now just using windows update to update XP and everything else. I have no problems getting the small security updates but i now need SP1 and/or sp2. The SP wizard begins and starts inspecting the machine, then as soon as its starts creating a SP1 or SP2.cab file the machine freezes. Any ideas why this is happening? The machine had SP2 on it before it needed re-building.
Do I had to get a new installation key to use when I install a upgrade CPU on a Windows XP Professional OS machine plus upgrading my system memory too?
I recently had a problem on my computer where Internet explorer was not working and would'nt open, and no windows based functions that used the explorer interface would work... So i downloaded the IE7 install package on my other computer and burned to disk to install. everything was going along fine, and when prompted to restart to finsih the installation i did so..... that is when "it" hit the fan.
I install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003
A firends machine (XPSP2) is stuck in a loop of starting, going to a screen that says Windows did not start correctly, then offering the options of safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, last known good, etc. No matter which option I choose, the machine shuts down and restarts and goes through the same loop. What should I check? I am able to get into BIOS.
I currently have windows xp home. I want to install windows xp home. how do i install it so i can keep my files from xp home. cause when i install xp pro i dont wana loose personal files or data.
I recieved the following message after a forced restart after windows updates were installed: "We are sorry for any inconvenience but Windows was unable to start successfully" My options are to start in Safe Mode , Last known config or normal. Safe Mode is the only thing that works. Also System Restore would not work Also System Recovery from Sony Vaio Recovery Wizard would not work
In a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?
It never would start windows normal but would in safe mode,so now i did a diskcheck and restarted now it gets hung up on the system32driversagp440.sys...at least thats the last one that pops up before it freezes.
We are trying to start a laptop but windows is not starting up properly. As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again. The cycles continues without any other options.
I decided to uninstall COLDFUSION from my system I confirmed yes to all those popups that say "this file is no longer needed want to delete"? during the uninstall process. Turns out I wiped out some important .dlls that windows needs to start up correctly. I am hung up on a DOS screen that reads: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows rootsystem32hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file. Where do I find the above dll and if its on the xp CD...where on the XP CD would it be?
I installed windows xp on a new hard drive. Now when I turn the computer on I get an error.A DISK READ ERROR OCCURED press CLT+ALT+DEL to restart when i press CLT+ALT+DEL the computer will restart but I keep getting the same error and windows won't start.
I just put in an ASUS mobo, and my XP Pro OS just sent me a message that Windows wouldn't come up because a dll was missing or corrupted. <Windows root>System32hal.dll. I'm in the Recovery Console, and I went to Systemroot, but the command <Windows root>System32hal.dll. is invalid. Other than reinstall XP, what can I do to find or get that hal.dll.
I can't get my samsung n110 netbook to hibernate. It always would work perfectly fine. Today (this just started today) it wouldn't go into hibernate. Instead it would just stay on. Typically, closing the screen would send it to hibernation mode, but it won't do that anymore. So I went to start>turn off computer. Held shift, and clicked hibernate. The windows screen came up, and said "Preparing to hibernate". It stayed on that screen for around 3 seconds, then just went back to the desktop, as if nothing happened. I read in multiple places to disable hibernation, restart, enable it again, then try again. I tried that, and it didn't work. Any idea on how this can be fixed? Keep in mind, standby works perfectly fine.
The computer only came with Windows XP Home edition. Would installing x64 windows improve my performance? Would it cause compatibility issues with x86 apps?
I just assembled a new computer and installed the Windows XP Professional 64x as the operating system. The computer runs perfectly by itself, but as not many programs are yet compatible with XP 64x, I was wondering if there is any possible way to convert from 64x to 32x without completely re-installing windows. Although the 64x Professional is ment for server use, this is in one of my home machines.
I may have to reformat my entire hard drive and reinstall a totally new, legal copy of either Windows XP Home SP2 or Pro SP2. Do NOT ask me how I know this! IF I want to format c:, what's the right process and sequence for doing this, and then reinstalling Windows from a CD?
I want to install Windows XP Pro 64 Bit on my Hp dv9907ca, which came with Vista Home Premium 32 Bit. I upgraded my RAM to four gigs, and get better gaming on XP and I'd like to upgrade my 32 bit to 64, problem is, the installation hangs as soon as it gets to 'Setup is loading Windows' still int he text based installation. I believe I read somehwere it's because of some sort of hard drive connection that's in newer computers, and XP doesn't have drivers for it. So basically, I'm wondering if soeone can figure out what's wrong, and tell me exactly what I need to do in order to get XP to work, now this is a laptop so I can't change any parts in it or anything like that.
First of all, hello everyone! I'm happy to have joined your community. I feel sort of bad for joining only to ask a question, but the boards just seemed so helpful I couldn't resist. Anyway, I recently installed the .net framework to a stable build of windows XP SP2, and now I'm having some problems. I deleted the asp.net account and checked the "don't use welcome screen" box in user profiles because I don't really like the login etc... that comes with it.
That was two days ago. This morning I turn on my computer only to have it take a long time at the windows loading screen, and hang at the off-blue loging screen without bringing up the login box. Now, I wanted to somehow get rid of the .net framework after I realised I didn't really need it, but now it's not even possible. I tried both entering in safe mode (hanging black screen with "safe mode" in the usual places) and using the last known working setting (and got the same off-blue login screen.) I don't mind reverting to a saved state, but I can't even access the desktop to be able to.
A friend of mine recently had a trojan revealed from a Mcaffe scan. It was listed as a Downloader-RK and the file effected was CIDAEMON.EXE I have read that this file is from Microsoft for Indexing. My friend brought it to the campus internt guys and when they removed it her internet wouldn't work. So they just left it quarantined. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues, but she still wants it off.
I suddenly encountered a problem yesterday. Alot of images/icons wouldn't display properly. When i try to play a video it starts flashes green stripes every 0,4 second(rough estimate) . After reading a bit on these forums. The most probably conclusion was that there was a problem with my graphics card. Is there anything else that could have caused this?
You see my cmd is working fine. Then one day I open run and type in cmd and then enter. I type in ipconfig and it says ipconfig isn't an external command or something like that. Anyways I fixed the problem by typing in run C:WINDOWSsystem32cmd.exe and enter. Weird enough it worked when i typed in ipconfig, and other commands. If I typed in cmd that was open from the run any commands wouldn't work. I tried creating an shortcut from the actual cmd file and trying commands but it still doesn't work. Well sometimes I code stuff or download .bat files because I need of em. And I try to open the file but it always usually runs fine but after that incident I try to open any .bat file and it just opens it and the window closes so fast. I don't know how to fix this problem uahghhh it's a pain in the butt lol. It's getting me so mad! I just want to use my normal cmd .
I altered the boot up in boot.ini so that I could choose safe mode at start up,When I changed it back a screen came up that I`d never seen before asking me to choose, WINDOWS or WINDOWS DEFAULT and I cant get rid of it.BY the way I am running XP Pro.
Everything installed fine except Win XP Pro starts to install, i insert the RAID driver disk it continues to install, then it gets to the loading/installing windows bar and stays there
For some time now a computer that I have has been constantly restarting, freezing or I had a look at it and he can't see any problems. suggested re-installing windows so I tried that, low and behold enter the Blue Screen, It has an error message USBPORT.SYS - Address F83DB50D
