I suddenly encountered a problem yesterday. Alot of images/icons wouldn't display properly. When i try to play a video it starts flashes green stripes every 0,4 second(rough estimate) . After reading a bit on these forums. The most probably conclusion was that there was a problem with my graphics card. Is there anything else that could have caused this?
View 11 RepliesI turn on my computer and everything looks fine at first.I see my desktop properly.Then when I try to play any movie files the image that it projects is sort of chopped up. I also happend to notice that when I browse some webpages JPG images appear distorted as well.Then when I try to play video files such as WMV, AVI, MPG and more... some of them appear distorted AND the audio sounds horrible.It's all scratchy like.But MP3s work fine as do WMAs... I'm so totally lost. I've tried a system restore, restarting my computer, changing my video properties (i.e. 32bit to 16bit and even lowering resolution) none of those worked.
View 14 Replies View RelatedFor a reason unknown to me, when I visit some webpages, instead of seeing some of the jpg or gif images that make up parts of a webpage I see the image box and a little red "x". Previously I have had no issues when I went to these pages, all the images would be visible. I have not intentionally changed any security settings, and dropping my firewall or Microsoft Antispyware does not seem to make a difference. I even dropped my security settings, but nothing. I have tried right clicking and then selecting "show
picture" but with no positive results.
Recently the colour (background colour it seems) has left any window i bring up on XP, but the strange thing is, the windows still show images and icons in full colour. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this? My computer has blue screened a couple of times recently, if that helps.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the software (which he has now uninstalled) that came with his new Canon camera. When he opens a folder of pictures (all jpgs) and his display default is set to "Thumbnails", he gets SMALL images (but not quite as small as "icons.") It also is VERY slow to display the images. If he changes the display to anything except thumbnail and then back to thumbnail, he gets the proper thumbnail size on all pics. If he just double clicks on the small image to open it and then closes it, all the images in the folder change to the correct thumbnail size.
View 3 Replies View RelatedXP PRO, sp3: Was working on a friend's computer. Slaved his hard drive to my system. I put in Windows CD and hit Enter to repair an existing installation. I decided to give it a run, so I started the repair process. And of course, as soon as I did, I realized I was on the WRONG INSTALLATION (mine, which was working - not my friend's)! The operation hadn't yet started - at least according to the progress bar - and the screen said something like, "Setup is loading" or "Setup is preparing" or something like that.

I get a message telling me that IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried system restore and tried to reinstall windows but it will not even load the restore disk. All the user accounts on the computer are doing the same thing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI switched on my PC one day and the quick launch icons on the left of my taskbar had gone. I right-clicked the taskbar and selected "toolbars" and "quick launch" and this brought back the quick launch icons but doubled the size of my task bar and it will not reduce to its normal size unless I remove quick launch from the toolbars menu.I then tried to drag shortcuts from the desktop to the taskbar, which is how I had originally got the quick launch icons I wanted, but they would not attach to the taskbar.I have made no recent changes of any kind.

View 14 Replies View RelatedIt doesn't matter what colour depth I run my video card at, the icons, task bar icons and the window icon top left of every window always display in what appears to be 256 colours. Everything else is 16 bit or 32 bit, depending on what depth I have selected to run my video card at."Show icon using all possible colours" is checked in display properties. I have tried reinstalling windows to refresh any files that may be corrupt.

I spybotted this last night and after i restarted i had no icons, no taskbar.what ive done is this: Ran ewido, did the complete scan, fixed all problems, saved logs from that, adaware, spybot and hijack this.in the other thread someone mentioned the lack of explorer.exe (shell?) in the reg edit, i followed the advice and found i too lacked this shell (im not sure if thats its real definition) and was wondering really what the next step is.
Below is a easy way to choose what windows icons you want to display on the desktop.Rightclick on the desktop and select "properties".In the new "display properties" window, click on the "desktop" tab.Hit the "customize desktop." button at the bottom of the window.Now you can select the icons you want.

In many applications, when I go to "File Open", I am presented with a default view of pictorial icons, rather than text listings of the files directory. This did not used to happen in earlier versions of Windows. Is there a way to stop this, so that I would only ever see a List or Details view, and never a pictorial representation of the files?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was running a program called "Virtual DJ", and it's a dj program, that turns the resolution to full screen, but while the app was in the process of going to full screen, my pc froze due to a lot of programs I had running, so now, the resolution on my computer is not how it normal should be, meaning, its not crisp like it was before, I mean at a first glance, most wouldnt notice anything, but if you look close, you can tell the text and icons are slighty stretched and blurry, so im going to post a screenshot of this page,so comapare this picture with yours,and look closly.I tried a system restore, but that dosnt even work(different issue)I think ti has to be a problem with the video card? One day my wife was working on a word document, and some of the text disappeared. When she scrolled down, then back up, some of it was back. The text was there, we just couldn't see it because of the display being weird. Dual core 3.4ghz Dell, 2gb RAM. Fairly new machine, XP pro.
View 10 Replies View Relatedxp boots past the login screen, but doesn't display any icons, taskbar or start button. On ctrl/alt/del and task manager - new task, I can run some apps. If I try to run explorer.exe I get 'cannot find....path not found...etc'.If I run cmd prompt, I can change to c:windows and dir for explorer - it's there but size is 1008640 bytes. I rename it to .old and run sfc which puts explorer.exe back - size 1004032 bytes. Now new task - explorer.exe loads my desktop icons, taskbar, and everything else. This is fine until I reboot, and then the problem recurs. Each time explorer.exe is replaced with the bigger file.
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run a fullscreen program for example a game, or go into standby mode and then resume to my desktop the icons, the windows and text etc are all quite blurred and not so crisp anymore. I had recently bought my laptop which is a Compaq Presario C793VU Notebook PC and it had Vista on it but I don't really like Vista so I downgraded to XP and installed most of the drivers that I could find. I would take screenshots of before standby/fullscreen and after except when I did both the images looked the same. After I restart/turn off my computer the display is fine until I stanby or play a game.

I just put in an ASUS mobo, and my XP Pro OS just sent me a message that Windows wouldn't come up because a dll was missing or corrupted. <Windows root>System32hal.dll. I'm in the Recovery Console, and I went to Systemroot, but the command <Windows root>System32hal.dll. is invalid. Other than reinstall XP, what can I do to find or get that hal.dll.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI can't get my samsung n110 netbook to hibernate. It always would work perfectly fine. Today (this just started today) it wouldn't go into hibernate. Instead it would just stay on. Typically, closing the screen would send it to hibernation mode, but it won't do that anymore. So I went to start>turn off computer. Held shift, and clicked hibernate. The windows screen came up, and said "Preparing to hibernate". It stayed on that screen for around 3 seconds, then just went back to the desktop, as if nothing happened. I read in multiple places to disable hibernation, restart, enable it again, then try again. I tried that, and it didn't work. Any idea on how this can be fixed? Keep in mind, standby works perfectly fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to reinstall windows after a virus took out all of the essential .dll files and the computer wouldn't start up, I now have a problem with some of my hardware not working. When I go into device manager the following have yellow question marks beside them:
ethernet controller
multimedia audio controller
video controller (VGA compatible).
The computer itself is an XC cube edition (not sure if that's a brand or not). It was supplied for a disabled student if that helps? It runs windows XP service pack 2.
Out of all these files, I would like to know what wouldn't harm my computer if I deleted, since they're all random stuff anyway

It was listed as a Downloader-RK and the file effected was CIDAEMON.EXE I have read that this file is from Microsoft for Indexing. My friend brought it to the campus internt guys and when they removed it her internet wouldn't work. So they just left it quarantined. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues, but she still wants it off.

View 6 Replies View RelatedYou see my cmd is working fine. Then one day I open run and type in cmd and then enter. I type in ipconfig and it says ipconfig isn't an external command or something like that. Anyways I fixed the problem by typing in run C:WINDOWSsystem32cmd.exe and enter. Weird enough it worked when i typed in ipconfig, and other commands. If I typed in cmd that was open from the run any commands wouldn't work. I tried creating an shortcut from the actual cmd file and trying commands but it still doesn't work. Well sometimes I code stuff or download .bat files because I need of em. And I try to open the file but it always usually runs fine but after that incident I try to open any .bat file and it just opens it and the window closes so fast. I don't know how to fix this problem uahghhh it's a pain in the butt lol. It's getting me so mad! I just want to use my normal cmd .

Nike/Philips sent me to Dell who sent me back to Nike/Philips who then sent me to Microsoft who I have so far been unable to contact successfully.Tried to uninstall software but received variety of errors, incl. some Java ones. Eventually appeared to delete it but trying to reinstall software always displays "Digital Media Manager already installed". Have tried manually removing some Registry elements but I'm clearly missing some. Does anyone know precisely which Registry elements I need to remove for a complete manual uninstallation ?

She tried to go on line again yesterday and it wouldn't connect to the internet. A dialogue box appeared stating: Buffer Overrun: a buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had bought several hard drives as is, hoping one of them would work. thought I had one, but turned out I couldn't install XP onto the disk, wouldn't copy any files. so I pretty much cut my loss on the drives and removed it the bad one from pc. now I get 2 options when booting windows. my original xp install, and the 2nd install that still needs to complete, how can I stop it from wanting to install xp again from the boot file and keep the original settings as they were?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI took it home and attempted to install windows xp on it and in the process things got messed up. I started up the computer and logged in. Once in, I inserted the Windows XP install so as to upgrade it and the process started out fine. Well it got to the point where it said it needed to restart in order to contiinue with the process, which it did. It restarted and began copying files, and it tossed out a few error messages. They were: could not copy file: spra0410.dll & spra0411.dll I tried to write them all down but I couldn't catch the all. I do know however there were about six files, all similar to the ones above, that didn't copy. I'm not too sure what to do at this point because now the computer won't go to windows at all. It goes through the start up screen all the way to the point where it says "press any key to continue", but then just kind of freezes and won't go any further. I've tried pressing a button to go forward, also tried to boot in safe mode whic none of the F Keys or Del will take me to. I tried changing the Bios to Boot from CD first using the same XP CD. I'm not sure what else I can do to get this thing to open windows, even in safe mode, or system restore. Sorry for the novel, just trying to explain in depth.
