Below is a easy way to choose what windows icons you want to display on the desktop.Rightclick on the desktop and select "properties".In the new "display properties" window, click on the "desktop" tab.Hit the "customize desktop." button at the bottom of the window.Now you can select the icons you want.

i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).

Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIt doesn't matter what colour depth I run my video card at, the icons, task bar icons and the window icon top left of every window always display in what appears to be 256 colours. Everything else is 16 bit or 32 bit, depending on what depth I have selected to run my video card at."Show icon using all possible colours" is checked in display properties. I have tried reinstalling windows to refresh any files that may be corrupt.
View 8 Replies View RelatedBasically from what i can gather is that my sister d/led some rather shoddy spyware via a searchbar that installed itself on my mozilla browser. I spybotted this last night and after i restarted i had no icons, no taskbar.what ive done is this: Ran ewido, did the complete scan, fixed all problems, saved logs from that, adaware, spybot and hijack this.in the other thread someone mentioned the lack of explorer.exe (shell?) in the reg edit, i followed the advice and found i too lacked this shell (im not sure if thats its real definition) and was wondering really what the next step is.
I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu,etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

In many applications, when I go to "File Open", I am presented with a default view of pictorial icons, rather than text listings of the files directory. This did not used to happen in earlier versions of Windows. Is there a way to stop this, so that I would only ever see a List or Details view, and never a pictorial representation of the files?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was running a program called "Virtual DJ", and it's a dj program, that turns the resolution to full screen, but while the app was in the process of going to full screen, my pc froze due to a lot of programs I had running, so now, the resolution on my computer is not how it normal should be, meaning, its not crisp like it was before, I mean at a first glance, most wouldnt notice anything, but if you look close, you can tell the text and icons are slighty stretched and blurry, so im going to post a screenshot of this page,so comapare this picture with yours,and look closly.I tried a system restore, but that dosnt even work(different issue)I think ti has to be a problem with the video card? One day my wife was working on a word document, and some of the text disappeared. When she scrolled down, then back up, some of it was back. The text was there, we just couldn't see it because of the display being weird. Dual core 3.4ghz Dell, 2gb RAM. Fairly new machine, XP pro.
View 10 Replies View Relatedxp boots past the login screen, but doesn't display any icons, taskbar or start button. On ctrl/alt/del and task manager - new task, I can run some apps. If I try to run explorer.exe I get 'cannot find....path not found...etc'.If I run cmd prompt, I can change to c:windows and dir for explorer - it's there but size is 1008640 bytes. I rename it to .old and run sfc which puts explorer.exe back - size 1004032 bytes. Now new task - explorer.exe loads my desktop icons, taskbar, and everything else. This is fine until I reboot, and then the problem recurs. Each time explorer.exe is replaced with the bigger file.

When i try to play a video it starts flashes green stripes every 0,4 second(rough estimate) . After reading a bit on these forums. The most probably conclusion was that there was a problem with my graphics card. Is there anything else that could have caused this?

View 4 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run a fullscreen program for example a game, or go into standby mode and then resume to my desktop the icons, the windows and text etc are all quite blurred and not so crisp anymore. I had recently bought my laptop which is a Compaq Presario C793VU Notebook PC and it had Vista on it but I don't really like Vista so I downgraded to XP and installed most of the drivers that I could find. I would take screenshots of before standby/fullscreen and after except when I did both the images looked the same. After I restart/turn off my computer the display is fine until I stanby or play a game.

Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. Some of the regular Windows images, i.e. Azul, Windows XP, etc. have the film icon, and do not display in preview.

My problem is that last Friday my desktop icons started having a blue back ground behind them. I have tried right clicking on the desktop and clicking properties then the desktop tab and there I can change the background colors, but I want the background to go away totally. I used to have just the icon and words with no back ground color at all. Can anyone help? I've compared the setting on this laptop to my other one at home and didn't come up with anything there. I also tried to restore the system to a date prior to Friday, but I get the message can not restore for every restore point I have chosen.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently had an annoying pop-up on my screen telling me I was infected , my Norton had expired so I loaded all the McAfee gubbins I got with my EasyNote E2 in 2005, after doing a scan it found 1 trojan and about 15 potentially harmful things! Not thinking , I deleted the lot even though it said that some files may be linked to applications and now when I boot up I get the PB purple screen, then the XP screen and the blue welcome screen, after this I see the picture I set as wallpaper stretched over the entire screen, then the screen goes pink (colour I chose for background) but once the icons start appearing on the desktop the screen goes white with a slight tinge of pink aound the icons. I can't even browse for pics to set as wallpaper and when I go into MY PICTURES and right click to "set as wallpaper" nothing happens.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with my desktop resizing itself after reboot. After rebooting, the left side of the desktop has a large black border that is 7" wide. The rest of the desktop then is not displayed properly size wise. Things on the right are not visible due to that left sided problem. I'm unable to take the cursor any further than where that border is. It's as if that area of the display doesn't exist. I've discovered if I right click the desktop there is an option called Graphics Options. There are two sub menus with one being panel fit and the other is rotation. To remedy the size problem I click panel fit and choose either full screen (no border)or maintain aspect ratio. Click the option that doesn't have a check mark beside it. There seems to be no correct choice in choosing this because both options do work. Always choose the opposite one. I've found the panel fit settings are located in my intel graphics media accelerator driver area.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got a huge hullabaloo and 'Malwarealarm' installed randomly ( I got it from a popup when Firefox told me the site was spywarefilled) and the computer was fine. I restart once, and I loose my background, my ability to select a background from the 'Desktop' tab under rightclick-properties on the desktop itself became null (just a black screen), and proceed to try a myriad of things. Installed the new DirectX driver, new ATI Videocard driver, DirectX9.0, rolled back to ATI Xtasy driver, then tried installing DirectX9.0 again. Run virusscan and spywarescans, got rid of a bunch of stupid cookies. When I login or logout of Windows, my old background appears for a second, then disappears once more.
