It doesn't matter what colour depth I run my video card at, the icons, task bar icons and the window icon top left of every window always display in what appears to be 256 colours. Everything else is 16 bit or 32 bit, depending on what depth I have selected to run my video card at."Show icon using all possible colours" is checked in display properties. I have tried reinstalling windows to refresh any files that may be corrupt.
View 8 RepliesWIN XP Sp2, IE 6 and also Firefox 1.5. For some reason all webpages fail to display any colour. It's as if the "Ignore colors specified on webpages" option in Accessibility in Internet options is checked. It isn't. Don't think it has anything to do with that option because I get the same issue with Firefox. I have removed all security software / pop up blocker software, cleared cache & cookies, restored IE defaults, and run scannow sfc to no effect. Am a little reluctant to roll back to a previous date but cannot think of any alternative solution.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have XPSP3 running on my computer and after cancelling a download of themes half way through(I know I shouldn't do that) I haven't been able to change my colours or theme. I have tried many methods from "Doug", a restore, but not yet a repair because I don't have an SP3 disk. I have copied the message I get here, any help would be appreciated thanks.

Basically from what i can gather is that my sister d/led some rather shoddy spyware via a searchbar that installed itself on my mozilla browser. I spybotted this last night and after i restarted i had no icons, no taskbar.what ive done is this: Ran ewido, did the complete scan, fixed all problems, saved logs from that, adaware, spybot and hijack this.in the other thread someone mentioned the lack of explorer.exe (shell?) in the reg edit, i followed the advice and found i too lacked this shell (im not sure if thats its real definition) and was wondering really what the next step is.
Below is a easy way to choose what windows icons you want to display on the desktop.Rightclick on the desktop and select "properties".In the new "display properties" window, click on the "desktop" tab.Hit the "customize desktop." button at the bottom of the window.Now you can select the icons you want.

In many applications, when I go to "File Open", I am presented with a default view of pictorial icons, rather than text listings of the files directory. This did not used to happen in earlier versions of Windows. Is there a way to stop this, so that I would only ever see a List or Details view, and never a pictorial representation of the files?

One day my wife was working on a word document, and some of the text disappeared. When she scrolled down, then back up, some of it was back. The text was there, we just couldn't see it because of the display being weird. Dual core 3.4ghz Dell, 2gb RAM. Fairly new machine, XP pro.
View 10 Replies View Relatedxp boots past the login screen, but doesn't display any icons, taskbar or start button. On ctrl/alt/del and task manager - new task, I can run some apps. If I try to run explorer.exe I get 'cannot find....path not found...etc'.If I run cmd prompt, I can change to c:windows and dir for explorer - it's there but size is 1008640 bytes. I rename it to .old and run sfc which puts explorer.exe back - size 1004032 bytes. Now new task - explorer.exe loads my desktop icons, taskbar, and everything else. This is fine until I reboot, and then the problem recurs. Each time explorer.exe is replaced with the bigger file.

When i try to play a video it starts flashes green stripes every 0,4 second(rough estimate) . After reading a bit on these forums. The most probably conclusion was that there was a problem with my graphics card. Is there anything else that could have caused this?
View 11 Replies View Relatedwhenever I run a fullscreen program for example a game, or go into standby mode and then resume to my desktop the icons, the windows and text etc are all quite blurred and not so crisp anymore. I had recently bought my laptop which is a Compaq Presario C793VU Notebook PC and it had Vista on it but I don't really like Vista so I downgraded to XP and installed most of the drivers that I could find. I would take screenshots of before standby/fullscreen and after except when I did both the images looked the same. After I restart/turn off my computer the display is fine until I stanby or play a game.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had problems with a couple fonts after I upgraded to XP SP3, so I undid the upgrade and reverted to SP2 (not without a few problems of its own).I now notice that some of the font names in my FONT folder are mainly blue in colour with a few in black. Amongst the ones in black are those that caused problems in SP3. could anyone explain the significance of these colors?

The text colours (like active links etc.) and normal images were working, but not any colours. Same with folders on the Desktop. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy printer has just started not to print all the full colours. It is an all in one HP PSC 1410 and now prints everything as either Yellow, Light green or light blue. I have changed both the colour and black cartridges and the computer is seeing them as full, but if I scan or print from computer it prints say the colour purple as light yellow and red as bright Yellow etc. I have tried removing and reinstalling software but that didn't cure the problem.

Now the monsters are small, and so is everything else outside of the game I have no idea what I did, I checked the Screen Resolution and it seems fine, and I also checked my monitor settings, which is fine.
The monitor started showing graphic distortion. I ordered a new monitor but had the same distortion on it. I updated the ATI drivers but it did not solve the problem. In trying to trouble shoot the problem following directions on the ATI website, I changed all the graphic settings to the lowest and slowest available. This got rid of the distortion but the settings need to go! Now I cannot open the display settings.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAll my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.
I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.
my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features
I was installing security cables for the computer stations. when I finished and rebooted the computers(had to disconnect power and other cords to run the security cables) one of them had a display problem.
it seems that the display area has been reduced. the functional area of the screen is maybe 60% of what it should be. in this area it is complete with the full desktop able to be accessed and nothing is missing. but the right 20% of the screen is solid black (cursor stops at the boundary) and the bottom 20% of the screen(that's not black) is displaying a second image of the top 20% of my desktop. (cursor also stops at this boundary.)
I reinstalled XP Pro with SP1 on my computer today. Everything is working well except when my desktop loads the actual display is about an inch to the right on the screen. If I go into properties and change/apply the screen resolution from 800 x 600 then back to 1024 x 768 it realigns and all is well. I would just prefer to not have to do that each time I restart windows.
