Desktop Without Logging In - Password Doesn't Default Setting
Dec 17, 2004Since I installed XP I've only had my profile and it's always taken me straight into my desktop without logging in. However now it's asking for a password and it doesn't seem to be the one I'd use for it. Is there a default password because I don't recall actually setting one up for it :s Or do I have to reinstall XP?

May 6, 2010At startup 2 days ago my desktop colour scheme was reset to classic with grey taskbar etc. When I tried to change it back to silver I found that the windows xp style in display properties appearance windows and buttons, was gone and only windows classic style was present. Confused I though maybe I needed to do a windows update. I proceeded to do so and while I was at it updated to SP3. After doing this I could successfully change my colour scheme back to silver and change the size of my active title bar and menu font etc back to the way they were. But now whenever I restart my PC the colour scheme has reverted back to the default blue xp theme and the size changes back to default as well.I'm at a aloss because I have windows auto updates turned off and had installed no new software the night before this happened.I should also add that I have already done a virus scan, Malwarebytes Anti-malware scan and a Spybot search and destroy scan but found nothing.

Jan 13, 2007I'm running Windows XP professional and when I change my desktop icons (my computer, my documents, my network places, recycle bin full and & empty) they revert back to the default settings when I restart my system. This doesn't effect my wallpaper, start menu settings or personalized colors, only the icons. The file that I'm using is an *.ico file which I know works fine. (I've used this file when I was still using windows 98.) I've also tried making a "theme" with the saved settings and that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if it's some simple setting that I'm over looking. Something stupid like "Restore default icons on restart"...I'd rather not edit my registry if I don't have to.

Mar 14, 2006WIN XP Sp2, IE 6 and also Firefox 1.5. For some reason all webpages fail to display any colour. It's as if the "Ignore colors specified on webpages" option in Accessibility in Internet options is checked. It isn't. Don't think it has anything to do with that option because I get the same issue with Firefox. I have removed all security software / pop up blocker software, cleared cache & cookies, restored IE defaults, and run scannow sfc to no effect. Am a little reluctant to roll back to a previous date but cannot think of any alternative solution.

Sep 3, 2008I had problems with a couple fonts after I upgraded to XP SP3, so I undid the upgrade and reverted to SP2 (not without a few problems of its own).I now notice that some of the font names in my FONT folder are mainly blue in colour with a few in black. Amongst the ones in black are those that caused problems in SP3. could anyone explain the significance of these colors?

Apr 30, 2005It doesn't matter what colour depth I run my video card at, the icons, task bar icons and the window icon top left of every window always display in what appears to be 256 colours. Everything else is 16 bit or 32 bit, depending on what depth I have selected to run my video card at."Show icon using all possible colours" is checked in display properties. I have tried reinstalling windows to refresh any files that may be corrupt.

The text colours (like active links etc.) and normal images were working, but not any colours. Same with folders on the Desktop. Mar 9, 2007My printer has just started not to print all the full colours. It is an all in one HP PSC 1410 and now prints everything as either Yellow, Light green or light blue. I have changed both the colour and black cartridges and the computer is seeing them as full, but if I scan or print from computer it prints say the colour purple as light yellow and red as bright Yellow etc. I have tried removing and reinstalling software but that didn't cure the problem.

Changing That Default Choice?
Mar 2, 2005Does anyone know how to changing that default choice? I want an administrator account and a public account. In the public account I don't want any right-clicking, changing desktop icons, things like this. I also want all of the things left on the desktop (downloads, shortcuts, etc.) to be gone when they log out. I did look at group policy editor but I don't like it. So I put System Policy Editor on it from a Windows Server 2000 CD.I have a .POL file made already and can't get it to work. Any websites on this would also be great.
Set Default Window Size ?
Sep 4, 2004Every time I open an explorer window on a floppy the window is maximized. Everytime I create a new folder, the default size is maximized. Whenever I plug in my flash drive, the window size is max. I already have remember folder size enabled, but it appears that each of the scenerios above are not included in this "memory" So the question is, how do I set the default size for each of the above to something other that max?

Jul 20, 2005I have an XP laptop that has both a dial up and an ethernet location. When at work I use an ethernet cable to check e-mail and connect to the internet. When at home I use a mindspring dial up. When I am at work with my ethernet connection, whenever I try to get onto the internet I get a message saying that I am offline. A get a message asking me to connect or cancel. When I connect, it does take me to the correct page. This happens all of the time. I can connect to each page every time I get this message but is seems to think I am in dial up mode.

May 4, 2008I've had XP 64 installed for a about 10 days now and everything is working fine. I didn't have any issues with drivers or applications. The default install and updates seem to use two versions of IE (64 and 32). I've swapped all my icons to choose the 32 bit version since there is no flash support for 64 bit browsers at this time. My problem is that I get a lot of links inside emails and when I click on those it always uses the 64 bit version. I've tried to change the default browser option through control panel but it only offers the option of IE and won't let me select which IE. I also have IE 32 set to check to make sure it's the default browser. I've done some Google searches but I must not be asking the right question because I can's find much on IE 64.
