XP PRO, sp3: Was working on a friend's computer. Slaved his hard drive to my system. I put in Windows CD and hit Enter to repair an existing installation. I decided to give it a run, so I started the repair process. And of course, as soon as I did, I realized I was on the WRONG INSTALLATION (mine, which was working - not my friend's)! The operation hadn't yet started - at least according to the progress bar - and the screen said something like, "Setup is loading" or "Setup is preparing" or something like that.
Recently, I installed the latest NVIDIA display drivers. However, I didn't uninstall my previous drivers, and when i remembered that i have to, i did...but after i had installed the latest drivers. And that's when the problem seemed to start. I looked on the Add/Remove programs list to see if the latest drivers were there, but there was nothing there. I couldn't find them on the list anywhere. So I tried reinstalling them, and when they were being installed, i got a message saying: "Windows could not load the installer for display. Contact your hardware vendor for assitsance."
I have this pentium 3 - 700 mhz computer which today I formatted and installed windows xp pro on it. The motherboard on the computer comes with a SIS 5598/6326 display adapter for which I been searching the internet for its WIN XP driver but havent found any except for the other versions of windows are available. What can I do if there is no WIN XP version of this driver?
I am experiencing pixelization problems. At first it would only occur at boot up or reboot. Now it is happening all the time which can be help somewhat by refresh, changing the desktop picture, and/or logging off then on I have tried, disabling the 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro using device manager. At first it was OK but at low resolution (VGA I think), but when it asked if I wanted to let windows manage the graphics it got garbled again. I have reset resolutions down to 800 x 600 using the graphics card but that doesn't help.
My girlfriend has an Emachines P3104 - AMD Sempron 3100+ 1.80GHz 1gig ram, xp pro sp2. At some point recently her teenage boys took it upon themselves to install a 2nd hard drive that they found in another Emachines that no longer worked. Shortly thereafter the standby button became greyed out and that function no longer worked. Then we could not get the computer to recognize or install the printer. Due to these and other various problems that accumulated over time.
After reinstalling XP due to some corrupted files, the software works OK now, but it does not recognize my display adapter, NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX440-8X. In the Device Manager there is no display adapter listed, and I am having trouble operating my scrolling and dragging features. NVIDIA is made by ChainTech.
I have recently gone back and redone a lot of windows. uninstalling updates and reinstalling them. I now do not have a display adapter showing up in the hardware manager. I cannot play games, and all rendereing is very slow. i have tried installing software from nvidia and the video card manufacturer. I have tried the add new hardware wizard, but nothing has worked. I have no idea what to do. I also took a graphics card from another computer and put it in mine and it did not show up either.
I reformatted a laptop and install XP for someone as they were having a lot of problems with it and I thought this would be the best way to go as alot of program stopped working. Anyway, after installing it, I still found that I couldn't installed the games he claimed were working before something went wrong and I determined it was the graphics card. I was even more sure when I noticed how poor the refresh rate was (scrolling up/down on web pages and playing games).
So I went to device manager to find out what the card was and install the latest drivers (he doesn't have the drivers for sound/video). But display adapters are not shown in device manager and I went through display -> settings -> advanced and it didn't tell me what card or driver was in there, all the information wasn't there. So any idea's as to how I can work out what card is in this laptop?
I really need help with this one. My standby mode is greyed out and on top of that it says my intel display adapters aren't working proberly in device manager. So what should i do im not really good with this tech stuff. Do i uninstall them or what because i have no idea how to get them back and i REALLY do not want to mess up my computer. Any help would be GREATLY appriciated thanks. And the intel adapter or driver came with the comp. Ive had this computer for about 9 months.
I did a silly thing today and installed Service Pack 3. It was a silly thing because it seems to have caused various small glitches with my system. I think I've sorted all of them except this last one. Before I installed SP3 my display adapter (NVidia GeForce4 Go 440 64M) inside my laptop (EASYNOTE K5305) was working fine. After the install the laptop doesn't even see it (not listed in device manager) and is running on a basic and lower resolution
I did some changes unintentionally and now my PC won't display anything after windows logo. After that the system asked me to reboot so I clicked OK.From that on my PC can boot and display windows logo but after that everything turn black. My PC is a DELL desktop run on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1, how to set that back?I tried safe mode, Last Know Good, and the like but it just end up in black screen.
HP laptop will not shut down with the DWA-643 wireless adapter card inserted in the expresscard slot. Operating system is XP SP2 Media. Laptop will just reboot itself. Of course, if I hold the power button down the system will shut down or take the card out. I have tried the Microsoft methods to shutting a system down if the system will not shut down. I've tried two different cards and get the same result. Any ideas or patch to resolve? Also, I have updated to the current driver on the Dlink download site. Using Windows zero configuration. Upgraded to latest BIOS available.
I have a notebook with xp pro and i have a foreign language keyboard that I would like to plug in and use. The keyboard is ps2 but I dont have a ps2 connection on my notebook. i went to an electonics store and bought a ps2 to usb adapter so that I could use this keyboard - but xp pro doesnt recognise it doesnt ask for new drivers - doesnt even register.
I'm trying to help my roommate get her laptop to access the Internet, but I can't figure it out.. Here are the hardware/software specs: Right now, the laptop either doesn't connect at all, or only very briefly. We've used both the Linksys networking software and the Windows one. However, it works fine when we don't have security setup, so I'm thinking it has something to do with this. We're using WPA-PSK with TKIP encryption. We don't want to have to leave our computers unsecured.
I would like to know why certain web pages cannot display properly, especially the images. They tend to appear as 'x' and it won't show even I right click on 'show picture'.May I know how to configure my setting in order to solve this problem?I am running on windows XP.
After installing the software (which he has now uninstalled) that came with his new Canon camera. When he opens a folder of pictures (all jpgs) and his display default is set to "Thumbnails", he gets SMALL images (but not quite as small as "icons.") It also is VERY slow to display the images. If he changes the display to anything except thumbnail and then back to thumbnail, he gets the proper thumbnail size on all pics. If he just double clicks on the small image to open it and then closes it, all the images in the folder change to the correct thumbnail size.
Im trying to install a LinkSys network card, and it doesn't work after I do. When I try to reinstall in device manager, the error I get is "name is already in use as either a device name or service name"I've tried all the obvious... uninstall, reinstall stuff. I know I have to play with the registry to fix this but I dont know where to start. Can anyone help me, because as of now, my mother's computer doesn't get the internet!
I had to install a new hard drive on my laptop. It has windows xp. That installed ok and now I can't get my wireless to work. It says "No active network adapters". It is not plugged into the ethernet, my home computer is. I usually just get on my laptop in another room with the wireless that is built into the computer.
Since upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2, my network adapter (a 3Com 3C905-TX-M)does not appear in Device Manager and I therefore can't get this computer to appear on my home network. The network adapter is still working because that's how I connect to the Internet, via LAN to a router then cable broadband, and IPCONFIG gives valid results including the correct IP address from the router via DHCP.I installed a clean copy of XP Home on a spare hard disk. The network adapter appeared in Device Manager and the computer appeared on the network. I then upgraded to SP2 and the network adapter disappeared from Device Manager and the computer no longer appears on the network.
I've recently install a tv tuner card in my pc running on windows xp sp2.while it recieves the cable signal properly but the screen is continuosly shaking and vibrating all the time.why this occures ,is it the problem of the tv tuner card or my pc?
I suddenly encountered a problem yesterday. Alot of images/icons wouldn't display properly. When i try to play a video it starts flashes green stripes every 0,4 second(rough estimate) . After reading a bit on these forums. The most probably conclusion was that there was a problem with my graphics card. Is there anything else that could have caused this?
After being away on holiday i return and ran SpyBot to see if my brother's downloading has put anything unwanted on my computer. It flagged up the usual things so they were removed. However it also started to pop up asking about allowing or denying changes to the registry.
I then started to get an error that meant double clicking on icons did nothing and a terminal error which was found in the microsoft debuger. I've no idea which one though as i ran the fix and thought nothing of it. It then prompted to run a malware sweep which took ages and flagged up 7 malicious files. I followed the instructions for removed and now suspect that this removed something from the registry that i now need.
The issue i now have is that nothing appears to work correctly. Firstly the taskbar disappeared, and while i've got that back the minimised windows sit on the top rather than being inside. Secondly MSOffice products like Excel and Word are showing errors about links and lastly i cannot access the web. I've tried the connection of the latter on another Pc and its all fine. I've looked through the msconfig and cannot see anything untoward.
My next steps are to try and run a 'hijack' log so see what is running by not sure what i'm doing with that and suspect it more what isn't running, eg its been deleted from the start up program.
Hi, I'm using win xp, sp1. When I go to start>run and type in something like cmd to open the dos prompt I see the window come up but it goes away after a second. the same thing happens when i type in regedit. now if I type in cmd.exe or regedit.exe it will work.
Another problem I assume is in the same category is when I get to the dos prompt and try to ping a site it won't do anything just go back to the c: prompt. If i type in ipconfig or do an nslookup it will work tho. what to do here or what else to try.
I have downloaded eset nod32 antivirus, RestrictionRemoval Tool(RRT), Wndows Defender, PrevxCSI, Security Task Manager, and Task Killer just to ensure that my pc is not infected with some malware. My Nod 32 antivirus is out of date since i only used the trial version. The nod32, windows defender and prevxCSI have found that my pc is clean from any malware but one time, while i was surfing the net, i was trying to right click but there is no response as if some application is trying to block my right click.i tried to click the desktop and right click but still nothing happened.. i tried to open the restriction tool but a sound just keeps playing "the windows critical stop". i tried to open the task manager and the same sound plays. i tried the prevxcsi and still the same sound plays.. i try to open "my documents" only to find that my menu bar is missing and sometimes the "help" button is the only one there.
recently my computer has been doing some very strange things. occasionally i get a box popping up saying that something has been terminated unexpectedly and the computer will shutdown in 60 seconds, but this is quite rare.
the main problems are having unusual crashes and moments where the computer acts like the monitor cable has been unplugged and then plugged back in. also i am having internet connection issues much more frequently than before, and sometimes my computer just slows down to snail pace or the mouse hangs every few seconds for no apparent reason.
i have searched through my task manager processes and cannot find anything there out of the ordinary. i have tried to run Ad-aware and Spybot but the programs both crash when they try to update, the same thing also happens with AVG antivirus, the computer refuses to let these apps access the internet connection. I do have Sygate Personal Firewall installed and usually it would run at startup but now there is no longer the icon in the system tray, and when I try to boot it up from start menu it too refuses to load. however the process 'Smc.exe' which I understand is part of Sygate Personal Firewall is still running.
As for system specs, I have:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 1 gig ram Geforce 6600 GT AGP Soundblaster Audigy 2 ASUS motherboard Windows XP Professional SP1
PS- I did have an idea why the spyware/adware/AV programs won't update, since recently my Sygate Personal Firewall seemed to forget which programs were 'allowed' or 'blocked', and I haven't run any of these programs since then. Now that I cannot access SPF to tell it to allow these programs that could be the reason they won't update. I am still at a loss as to why SPF/AVG do not load up on startup as they used to however.
i have been having trouble with my sound for a few weeks now and have been unable to find out how to solve my problem. whenever i get onto the internet the sound does not work. not on any sites, everytime i go onto Internet i can see the video perfectly, but am unable to hear the sound. however when i open up ituens and listen to music the sound works perfectly fine! it also works fine when i put in a cd or dvd or have any games running! does anyone know whats wrong?

I'm having problems with my computer, ImgBurn, uTorrent, RealPlayer freeze when I try to use them and LiveMessenger doesn't open at all, for some reason FireFox started working after restarting the computer, which I had to do manually because nothing happens when I press the shutdown or restart buttons,
I've had Avira detect and remove 3 trojans and restarted but my programs still won't run properly.
I was downloading a pdf file through torrent but I have checked the file and it seems to be clean.
Could anyone help me ? should I post a Hijack this log? and if so, which part?
