Hard Drive Failure - "No Operating System"
Apr 22, 2007
I had a hard drive failure, and have a full copy of the hard disk which contains the operating system. However, when I copy this in its entirety to a new hard drive, that hard drive does not boot.
The bios just states "No Operating System".
Is it actually possible to do what I am trying to do? That is, to reinstate the operating system from a backup CD?

Just want to upgrade from an 80 gig hard drive to something in the 250-500 gig range, and I would like to clone my existing drive with operating system directly to the new drive. Is it possible with freeware? I'll then format the old drive and use it as the slave.

Per "My Computer", the drives are: C:= 200 gig, File: system NTSF. D:= 8.5gig (A partition on the C Drive, it contains HP_Recovery), File: system FAT32. E:= LightScribe DVD/CD Burner/Player, F:= My "Back-up" HD, 160 gig, Seagate Ultra ATA/100, File: system NTSF. G, H, I & J are available for future use.
I backed up all my files etc. from my old PC (Windows Me upgraded to XP) onto the 160 gig HD. The "Back-up" HD was the slave in my old PC. It contains Files etc. there is no Operating System on it.
After installing the "Back-up" HD in the new PC I get an "Error loading OS" message when I boot-up. If I turn off the PC, wait 60 seconds and then turn it on it loads OK and yes I can access the 2nd HD, copy files and paste them into the new 200 gig HD etc.

I took a hard drive out of another computer and put it into my computer to fix it. (I have my reasons for doing that) i hooked up the hard drive and when i turned on my computer, it loads the screen(the screen where it shows the master, slave, etc.). Then it loads the screen about boot from CD, and then it stops It stays at that screen and doesnt load windows.

I want to reload XP PRO, clean the haed drive and give him a fresh start, yet it tells me that I have an earlier version and will not let me install it. It says to reboot and start using my XP Pro and it still does not work. I have checked the BIOS and everything is right in it, i.e boot from CD. I for the life of me cannot format this drive so I can reload a fresh copy of XP PRO and all the updates, and then some other programs. I am pulling my hair out over this. What am I missing that I cannot format and start over,

A friend of mine would like me to take a look at his computer for him later. He said he is getting an error message when he starts it up that says Failure to read internal drive Press F1 to reboot. He doesn't have the exact message but that's about it. Does this mean the hard drive is bad, or is there hope that I can fix this?

I am trying to determine if I really have a hard drive failure. I'm running XP pro. While running EXCEL this morning, my computer froze. Could do nothing but turn the power off and re-boot. Upon re-booting, prior to getting to the Windows screen, I got a message about can't find the hardware. Re-booted again, this time it said there was a problem with the hard drive and it ran a check disc. Took about 6 hours. While it was running, it said there were about 8 to 10 problems had to do with the IE5.1 temporary files. It finished and booted to windows XP.
I thought all was ok. Finished by Excel work. Printed it out ok. Came back later to a black screen with the same initial message about can't finding the hardware.I called Gateway - Tech adviser had me run a program from the Recovery disc that checks the hard drive. Program said hard drive failed. Tech rep said I need to get a new Hard drive. Is this correct or are there other possibilities?

This past August i purchased a Dell PC. It has 160gig Hard Drive. Last night while finishing up some work my PC froze. Because i couldnt move i rebooted my machine. After i rebooted my PC was stuck in the Windows XP boot screen(The screen where that little blue bar scrolls just before the PC boots into windows). It wouldnt boot into windows. I decided to reboot again, and again it just shows the windows xp scroll bar trying to connectI then called Dell, i was asked to boot up and press F12 to do a diagnostic. It came back showing "Failure 7". The Dell "Guru" epxplained to me that my hardrive had failed on me.

My laptop, which was my dad's old office laptop, recently crashed. One day when I turned it on, a blue screen popped up and said there were a corrupt file or something. So I decided to reformat using a Windows XP cd, and for some reason it kept getting stuck on 91%, so I just left it on and it eventually hit 100% and completed. After everything was done, I turned it back and after the first Dell Screen bootup, the screen goes blank for 30 seconds, then a a line of white vertical lines show up at the bottom, looking at though something is loading, and it eventually finishes after a minute or two.Next the XP Bootup Screen comes up, and begins to load, but then the screen goes blank again.

My external hard drive has suddenly stopped working. My computer can see the drive (but not the drive label) and the shortcut I have for the drive will open it but when it does there is nothing there.I have downloaded a few so called free data recovery pieces of software and they can all see the data on my drive with no problems, even stuff I'd previously deleted seems to be available for recovery, however, as soon as you try to recover the data these "free to use" tools need to be registered and paid for.

I did a new hard drive install. When the new HD was complete I thought I would copy the data from the old drive to the new. They both still had os installed They were both connected to the system at the same time. When I finished, I removed the old drive. The new drive wouldn't boot. "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". After recovery disk completed, the system booted fine. I could reboot from the shutdown option.
The problem I have is when the system is shutdown completely. It requires the system disk again. It will reboot after the system disk is reinstalled. I continually get the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" error message.During bootup after a shutdown, I can F2 into the bios before the error message. It will allow me to exit and then windows will boot without the error message.

I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....

I am experiencing a registry (hive) file failure which does not allow me to load Windows. Whenever I try to boot in safe mode, or any mode, I get a blue screen that reads:i did some searching on this forum and found a thread that mentioned taking the drive out of the problem computer and slaving it into a different machine to repair the registry. I do have another computer, so this would be an option for me although may be a bit too advanced for my expertise or lack thereof. But I have a BlacX hard drive docking station (basically an external hard drive reader)

I can't believe this is happening to me. AGAIN. How do I even begin to figure out what is wrong? Let me provide some background. In March I had a hard drive failure. I had shot 4gb worth of photos and that night I copied the memory cards onto my hard drive. I then began sorting, re-naming, and organizing them. Next morning, I was in the middle of doing that when it died. The computer froze up a couple times before eventually the drive was not recognized. Diagnostic tools showed some corruption or logical failure. I RMA'd the drive but I lost several gigs of photos from a previous day.

I am receiving the following error at startup: "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" There are no CD's in the CD drive. However, I ran the System Diagnostics and when it got to the Disk section - it is not recognizing the disk - it said Warning...and to check the cables. I have done that, and everything seems to be connected correctly.

Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

I have tried using my Upgrade Disk to install it on my new disk, but it didn't work right. It added a menu during start up to include a second Operating System choice but it wouldn't load. I removed it from my new drive in order to start over, but now that stupid menu choice is still there.First, how do I remove that? Second, how do I go about Transferring my Operating system to my new drive without buying a New Operating System?

Trying to use the system recover cd.to try and repair windows xp pro. I get to the part where the screen is supposed to offer repair. My screen comes up showing partitions on the drive. It also says unknown disk but it lists the c: drive with 76246 MB and two other partitions. It just gives me the option to setup windows xp on the selected item or to select a different partition or delete a partition.I'm not getting the screen shown in the sticky. When i hit enter on the large partition it warned about installing two Operating System on the drive.Afraid to go farther, hoping I can save the files on the hard drive.
