A friend of mine would like me to take a look at his computer for him later. He said he is getting an error message when he starts it up that says Failure to read internal drive Press F1 to reboot. He doesn't have the exact message but that's about it. Does this mean the hard drive is bad, or is there hope that I can fix this?

Every time I turn my computer on I am getting the following error message;
"Read Failure on internal hard drive. No bootable devices -- Strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utlility"
and every time I attempt to retry boot by entering F1 I do am immediately brought back to the same message. Can someone please help as I am in desperate need to recover company files located on the hard drive.
I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

My problem is that I am trying to use a 60 GB ATA / 133 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Internal Hard Drive as an External Drive as a Slave and I am having trouble getting my bios to recognize it.The Hard Drive is hooked up in the same way as an Internal SATA DVD burner setup as an External DVD Burner that is running on Windows Office XP 2003 and it works fine. So what suggestion would you give me so that I maybe able to get the bios to recognize this drive?

One of those times it attempted to do a scan disc but failed to complete. One time I got the XP loading screen, but it failed also. If I turn the moniter off then on, I get the moniter logo followed by NO SYNC. I am not a pc guru, but I think the hard drive may be dead.

Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up. fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. View 14 Replies View Relatedjust installed a second internal hard drive. tried to access bios at start up (to setup hard drive) but system doesn't respond to ANY keyboard keys. system just continues with normal Windows boot-up. once XP is running all functions and software seem fine. no matter how many times I try at "Press Del to enter Setup" nothing works. Jusat before I had this problem, I had a problem with software (which I have removed) that caused my system to lock up. when I rebooted system stopped and offerred reboot options, ea: Safe Mode, but I the arrow keys would not work, system just went directly to Windows boot up.how can I access the bios if system doesn't respond to keyboard?

I can't believe this is happening to me. AGAIN. How do I even begin to figure out what is wrong? Let me provide some background.In March I had a hard drive failure. I had shot 4gb worth of photos and that night I copied the memory cards onto my hard drive. I then began sorting, re-naming, and organizing them. Next morning, I was in the middle of doing that when it died. The computer froze up a couple times before eventually the drive was not recognized. Diagnostic tools showed some corruption or logical failure. I RMA'd the drive but I lost several gigs of photos from a previous day.

I need to replace my internal hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I do not want to copy anything from it. I bought the new hard drive, but I am not sure how or what order to install everything. I have the 'Reinstallation CD MS Win XP Home' from Dell, SP2 & SP3, and the Drivers & Utilities cd 'for reinstalling dell inspiron system software'. Since these are all 'reinstallation' cds, can I use these? Is there a website or other link that you can point me to that may have step by step instructions/pictures of this entire process? I am not doing an actual reinstall, but that's what the cds say. I am installing a NEW hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can get the actual HD in the laptop. It's just a matter of what to do next to get Windows XP on it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to determine if I really have a hard drive failure. I'm running XP pro. While running EXCEL this morning, my computer froze. Could do nothing but turn the power off and re-boot. Upon re-booting, prior to getting to the Windows screen, I got a message about can't find the hardware. Re-booted again, this time it said there was a problem with the hard drive and it ran a check disc. Took about 6 hours. While it was running, it said there were about 8 to 10 problems had to do with the IE5.1 temporary files. It finished and booted to windows XP.
I thought all was ok. Finished by Excel work. Printed it out ok. Came back later to a black screen with the same initial message about can't finding the hardware.I called Gateway - Tech adviser had me run a program from the Recovery disc that checks the hard drive. Program said hard drive failed. Tech rep said I need to get a new Hard drive.Is this correct or are there other possibilities?
This past August i purchased a Dell PC. It has 160gig Hard Drive. Last night while finishing up some work my PC froze. Because i couldnt move i rebooted my machine. After i rebooted my PC was stuck in the Windows XP boot screen(The screen where that little blue bar scrolls just before the PC boots into windows). It wouldnt boot into windows. So I decided to reformat using a Windows XP cd, and for some reason it kept getting stuck on 91%, so I just left it on and it eventually hit 100% and completed.After everything was done, I turned it back and after the first Dell Screen bootup, the screen goes blank for 30 seconds, then a a line of white vertical lines show up at the bottom, looking at though something is loading, and it eventually finishes after a minute or two.Next the XP Bootup Screen comes up, and begins to load, but then the screen goes blank again.

Did diagnostics and it checks out, spins up, but somehow the file directory got corrupt? it's a WD 120. Would using the Recovery console be the best option to repair that file system? I am unable to do a scandisk/Chkdsk from DOS or within XP. I have some video files I'd hate to loose to reformating that drive to repair it.

I found this out after XP's system file went irreparably corrupt, when my hackintosh (installed on a different hard drive) started experiencing the same problems.Bad RAM has been removed, and I'm trying to reinstall XP. I formatted the drive using OSX's Disk Utility program, wrote zeros to the entire surface, and partitioned it in FAT32 (Disk Utility can not format to NTSC).When I use my CD to reinstall Windows, it does not read the full drive. It instead offers to install XP on a 130gb drive where my 640gb drive is. If I follow it through, it installs just fine, but it formats my 640gb drive to only have one usable NTSC partition of 130gb.The last time I attempted this, I removed every drive and storage device from my computer except for the 640gb drive and the same thing still happened.

When the new HD was complete I thought I would copy the data from the old drive to the new.They both still had os installed They were both connected to the system at the same time.When I finished, I removed the old drive. The new drive wouldn't boot. "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". After recovery disk completed, the system booted fine. I could reboot from the shutdown option.
The problem I have is when the system is shutdown completely. It requires the system disk again. It will reboot after the system disk is reinstalled. I continually get the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" error message.During bootup after a shutdown, I can F2 into the bios before the error message. It will allow me to exit and then windows will boot without the error message.
It started when i use Partition Magic.
there was a notification error said that Partition Magic can't read my Hard Drive, because of 'drive wrong naming' (i forgot the exact word) then came up an option 'do you want to fix it?' YES/NO - I chose YES
but after that, I can't go into to windows again (Vista64) it stuck on loading process forever
- Hard Drive are detected on BIOS
- When I use another 'health' HD with this 'broken' one, then the 'health' HD won't boot either, but it will normally boot again if I unplugged the 'broken' HD
- When booting via Windows Installation Disk (tried to re-install Windows), it stuck again on windows loading
I am having an issue with a Maxtor Model Number 92739U6 hard drive. I have just finished formatting and installing windows xp home edition. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer. First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del. I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor?s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer. Same Error?. The thing I can?t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.

Whenever I try to boot in safe mode, or any mode, I get a blue screen that reads:i did some searching on this forum and found a thread that mentioned taking the drive out of the problem computer and slaving it into a different machine to repair the registry.
