Replace Internal Hard Drive On Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop
Jan 11, 2009
I need to replace my internal hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I do not want to copy anything from it. I bought the new hard drive, but I am not sure how or what order to install everything. I have the 'Reinstallation CD MS Win XP Home' from Dell, SP2 & SP3, and the Drivers & Utilities cd 'for reinstalling dell inspiron system software'. Since these are all 'reinstallation' cds, can I use these? Is there a website or other link that you can point me to that may have step by step instructions/pictures of this entire process? I am not doing an actual reinstall, but that's what the cds say. I am installing a NEW hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can get the actual HD in the laptop. It's just a matter of what to do next to get Windows XP on it.

I have the a problem with my Dell Inspiron 6000. I wanted to change my 60 GB HD with a 320 GB Western Digital HD. I knew about the maximum 137 GB that the BIOS could recognoze, but when I booted from the XP CD it looked like it could recognize the entire 320 GB HD, so I thought OK and tried to make only one partition of 320 GB.
After doing this when I start my laptop I only get the blinking cursor in the upper left corner. So I pretty much knew that it was because I partioned my drive to large.
And this is where my REAL problem begins. I am trying to boot from the XP CD to make more partitions under the 137 GB limit. However my computer won't boot from the CD and let me delete the 320 GB partition. I jut get a black screen?! My computer just refuses to boot from the CD and it's also unable to boot from the hard drive (which never worked after the installation).

I recently bought a new battery, thinking my old one which was a refurbished battery just packed up as it was on the way out. When i put new battery in the power meter reads 52%. The battery is not charging however! When the power plug is pulled out the battery light does not come on! The battery is a brand new 9cell, so im sure it is not the battery. I suspect this is why refurbished battery died, or has it? Any thoughts suggestions would be appreciated as im not so savvy at the tech stuff. The computer has been running abit slower recently after upgrading memory 3 months ago to 2gb, so wondering if its caught something! I have avast protection.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook w/ 512 MB Ram running XP sometimes takes up to 15 minutes to begin booting up. For 15 minutes there will be a blinking cursor in the top corner before I see the typical "Dell" then "Microsoft" bootup signs. I ran Adaware and Spybot and Antivirus and this seemed to solve the problem temporarily. Now the problem comes and goes. The computer still has Mcafee that was pre-installed, but with no paid subscription. And Mcafee still sends the "update" popups, even after I though I've disabled them. Could the Mcafee be causing the problems?

I was surfing around and then all of a sudden my wallpaper is a warning box saying that there is spyware detected and I need to install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean up my computer. When I right click the desktop it just has "themes, appearance, and settings" no "desktop" or "screensaver" By the way it's on a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop.

As fate would have it, the warranty expired on the 15th of July - The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop - running windows XP. After being left online overnight in a hotel with wireless internet it locked up. Currently we get different results (but all results end in a lock up at the windows screen) - usually it comes up with a screen saying "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" (no new hardware or software was installed prior to lockup) It gives you options to try to start - (I can't remember what all it said - but safe mode was a choice and going back to a prior time was a choice) Usually it is just locked up and you can't click on anything.
Once I did get it to go to safe mode and I tried to do a system restore - It did go through all the motions of doing a system restore - but when rebooted - the same "we apologize" error was there - WHen I can click on a starting option it goes to the windows screen - the blue line runs for a few seconds - then it just locks up. Dell wants a small fortune to help me over the phone. This is my son's college computer. I was thinking he probably picked up a virus when he was online in the hotel. Is that possible? It has let me get into set up by pressing F2 during boot - but I have no idea what to do there (if anything) F12 is another option it gives - but it wont do anything when I push that.

Physical memory dump complete.Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance I fixed that by going into the recovery console and replacing:C:windowssystem32configsoftware C:windowssystem32configsam.bak

I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

My sis has one of those Wally-Mart Acer mini laptops; NO CD-ROM drive in it (PS: way-bad idea! Never buy a computer w/o a dvd/cd drive in it!). She managed to delete the graphics card driver and so when that occurred and rebooted, nothing on-screen! Its there, you just cannot see anything in windows! And, because there is no drive, the CD with all the original programs cannot be run in start-up mode without an external CD-ROM drive
I want to use my (HP Pavilion zv6000 w/XP) laptop as that external drive to re-load her original CD, which (of course) has all the drives on it! At start-up, the Acer (also w/XP) has an option to start-up from an ext. drive, so it has that capability (obviously, w/o a drive of its own), but how to make my HP "look" like an external drive (via USB-to-USB hookup) is the problem!

In addition to my other posting here, I want to ask you professionals, if it is possible to mirror my existing hard drive onto a much larger hard drive? My partition C became way too small over the years, the Windows XP files have blown up their size. Partition D (which contains all installed programs) is still fine. But I was never able to use software like "Partition Magic" to adjust the space between these two partitions. So I might just have to buy a new hard drive. But I want - I even HAVE - to keep the installed XP the way it is now. Lots of software installed. So I wonder, if there is any way just to "mirror" the existing version of XP onto a new hard drive, and then just to exchange the old hard drive with the new one?

A friend of mine would like me to take a look at his computer for him later. He said he is getting an error message when he starts it up that says Failure to read internal drive Press F1 to reboot. He doesn't have the exact message but that's about it. Does this mean the hard drive is bad, or is there hope that I can fix this?

My Inspiron 6000 laptop, with Windows XP Pro, has an interesting problem:
When I now unplug the AC adaptor from the back of the laptop, the little icon of the plug in the bottom right corner of the taskbar does not switch to a picture of the battery. When I highlight over it, it still says "On AC Power" as though it were still plugged in.
Even weirder, when i click the icon (or go thru control panel), and get to "Power Meter", it says the battery is not present, and that the current power source is AC power. But the battery is definitly present, as i am able to use the laptop under these conditions, and seriously, I dont mean i took the plug out of the wall only. The plug is not connected to the laptop and the above still happens. The only thing that recognizes the difference when the laptop is not plugged in is the little orange LED light just under the right side of the monitor. When it is plugged in, the light turns green.

I've got an HP / Compaq notebook where the smart diags indicated a failing hard drive, HP shipped me a replacement drive under warranty and I removed the drive and used a couple of notebook hard drive adapters to hook them up as master and slave on the secondary channel of one of my desktops. I then used Ghost to clone the failing drive to the replacement since I really didn't want to have to reinstall all my applications again. The clone completed without any seeming problems however I haven't been able to get the new drive to boot up, the problem is that I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor and no boot menu, end of story...
I happen to have a Win XP Pro full version CD and I am able to boot from the CD to the recovery console, I've tried the following: Chkdsk /R - Did find and fix some problem the first time around, but didn't find anything wrong on subsequent runs. Fixboot - ran with no problems but still no go. FixMbr - indicated "This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record", no matter how many times I've run this and it says it's rewritten the MBR successfully it still says the same thing. In-place upgrade - I've run an in-place upgrade twice and both times it completes and says the system will reboot and the installation will continue but it still gets stuck on the reboot. Following the two in-place upgrades I've rerun all of the previous steps and I still can't get it to boot, nor do I get any type of error message that indicates what the problem is.

I have not been able to get past a dark screen for two days. I have rebooted about 10 to 15 times. One of those times it attempted to do a scan disc but failed to complete. One time I got the XP loading screen, but it failed also. If I turn the moniter off then on, I get the moniter logo followed by NO SYNC. I am not a pc guru, but I think the hard drive may be dead.
