I have Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.I formatted and installed windows xp professional and download drivers from the Dell website everything seems to be working but the drivers for Audio and Network card is not working.
View 8 RepliesI recently uninstalled a bunch of unused programs from my Win XP and I may have uninstalled some thing. Now the DVD does not play anymore and I get the error message "The file does not have a program assocaited with it to perform this action." each time I try to play a DVD.I have gone to the "Device Manager" to check for the DVD driver. It is still there and working fine. I even unistalled the driver and rebooted my computer. This did not help.

Tried Vista, hated it.. formatted to my old XP Home. realised i had to download and install all the drivers myself as i dont have any cd's or manuals from Dell. so i did that. only problem is my 'Ethernet Controller' and 2 'PCI Devices# have yellow exclamation marks next to them, and i have no sound on the laptop. ive tried absolutely everything. hundreds of different drivers, tutorials, etc. i'm very desperate. i need my sound back.
View 5 Replies View RelatedDell Inspiron 6400, Windows XP I can usually fix simple problems, so many people ask me to help them with simple problems. My mother had what i thought to be a simple problem that now appears to be a fatal problem. My mom ran Lavasoft Ad-Aware because the computer seemed to be running slower then normal, also receiving many more pop-ups then normal. Ad-Aware was detecting around 50 infections, the infections kept returning even after Ad-Aware 'fixed' them. many pop-ups and slow performance. I did the same thing, ran Ad-Aware, and recognized that the majority of infections cam from the same root files; rustock, vxgame and spyware.trojan. Ad-Aware could not remove them so i downloaded Spybot, Spybot did the same thing, recognized them but after restart the problems and the infections were still there.

Anyway, Now I can't get anything to work cause I have no drivers, I mainly need the ethernet driver. The laptop has a Nvidia 8600M GS video card, and I cannot for the life of me find any drivers for the video card that work with XP. The drivers on Nvidia's website are not for laptops, and I have seen on other forums that there are driver issues with HP notebooks and XP.When I boot Windows XP, images load very slowly and my video card does not even show up in the device manager. Does anyone know if there's a way to get drivers for this card that work in XP?

Before the reinstall, I managed to track down this page on the Sony Asia website (http://www.sony-asia.com/support/dow...subpage=detail), and downloaded all of the listed drivers onto a memory stick. Having formatted the disk and installed Windows, I installed the drivers in the order listed on the website. They all worked perfectly, except for the Realtek audio driver.No sound was played by the computer, and when viewing the sound preferences under the Control Panel, I was informed that there is No Audio Device.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs fate would have it, the warranty expired on the 15th of July - The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop - running windows XP. After being left online overnight in a hotel with wireless internet it locked up. Currently we get different results (but all results end in a lock up at the windows screen) - usually it comes up with a screen saying "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" (no new hardware or software was installed prior to lockup) It gives you options to try to start - (I can't remember what all it said - but safe mode was a choice and going back to a prior time was a choice) Usually it is just locked up and you can't click on anything.
Once I did get it to go to safe mode and I tried to do a system restore - It did go through all the motions of doing a system restore - but when rebooted - the same "we apologize" error was there - WHen I can click on a starting option it goes to the windows screen - the blue line runs for a few seconds - then it just locks up. Dell wants a small fortune to help me over the phone. This is my son's college computer. I was thinking he probably picked up a virus when he was online in the hotel. Is that possible? It has let me get into set up by pressing F2 during boot - but I have no idea what to do there (if anything) F12 is another option it gives - but it wont do anything when I push that.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to replace my internal hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I do not want to copy anything from it. I bought the new hard drive, but I am not sure how or what order to install everything. I have the 'Reinstallation CD MS Win XP Home' from Dell, SP2 & SP3, and the Drivers & Utilities cd 'for reinstalling dell inspiron system software'. Since these are all 'reinstallation' cds, can I use these? Is there a website or other link that you can point me to that may have step by step instructions/pictures of this entire process? I am not doing an actual reinstall, but that's what the cds say. I am installing a NEW hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can get the actual HD in the laptop. It's just a matter of what to do next to get Windows XP on it.

I can still reach the advanced setup sceme for safe modes etc, by pressing F2 or F8. Also unable to startup the system in safemodes nor all other possible ways through the F8 menu. System gives an possible unexpected power failure, when I startup the system apears the traditional windows XP screen but before the welcome screen appears, appears a blue screen saying something about virtual memory dump. This screen disapears so quickly that I'm unable to read the complete message. I have no XP software or what so ever, notebook was in my possesion never connected to the net.

I replaced the storage drive...this had been the "first" drive and was labeled c: while the one running XP was labeled d:I installed the new drive and rebooted. In the process, the volume labels flipped: the primary drive became c: and the storage drive becoming d: This has thrown Windows into a world of confusion and all previously installed programs show up as uninstalled. They are still there in "program files" but many of them refuse to open, reporting not being able to find .dll files which I can search for and find on the computer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen the storm died down I booted the computer up and it made a series of "ca-click, ca-click" (that's pretty much exactly what it sounded like, too) noises. It ran slowly, but it managed to boot up. I ran all my programs normally, including logging into World of Warcraft. I got disconnect from the server (DSL hiccup, I think) and went to log back in. There's a bug in the game that sometimes causes computers to freeze on re-logging automatically into an instance. I could still hear ventrilo, but the monitor was frozen.
I told people I'd brb and pressed the power button. It rebooted and this time it made a LOT more clicking noises and paused at a black screen after the dell logo went away. After a few minutes it told me that one of my sys.dll files was missing and I needed to put in the windows disc and repair. Every time I subsequently restarted, a different file was supposedly missing. Sometimes it was NSFW and sometimes it was something else.
I'm trying to find the drivers for this computer, the drivers on the hp site won't download and I can't find them anywhere.

Trouble is, because Acer arent in ATI's list of approved venders or something, I cant install the ATI mobility drivers, OR indeed, the normal Radeon drivers. View 2 Replies View RelatedWe use a USB device which allows us to plug in IDE and SATA hard drives to test and read data. We use one computer for this testing and we test a lot of drives. Well recently the device started locking up the computer just as the computer finishes loading the drivers. I first thought it was the USB in the machine, but mice and keyboard both work in all the ports. I then thought it was the device but I tried it in another machine and it worked as it should. I tired plugging in a flash drive into the machine and it does the same thing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI hit the power button and I get the blue screen with the Dell logo and then the black screen that says, "Initializing Intel (R) Booting Agent..." in white text at the top. (All normal). Right after that, it goes to an error page with the text, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware of software change might have caused this" and so on and so forth. To my knowledge, there have been no recent hardware or software changes. My options from there are as follows:
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode with Networking
- Safe Mode with Command Prompt
- Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
- Start Windows Normalliy
I am unable to start in any of the modes offered to me. The excuse given for all of this inconvenience is that, "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to repair.".......
I'm not having any problems with the audio itself,but I just reinstalled XP and before when I would press the volume up/down buttons at the top of the laptop a green bar/scale thing would come up on screen to show me how high/low my volume was. After reinstalling the audio drivers from IBMs website it does not do this anymore
