View 6 RepliesI need to replace my internal hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I do not want to copy anything from it. I bought the new hard drive, but I am not sure how or what order to install everything. I have the 'Reinstallation CD MS Win XP Home' from Dell, SP2 & SP3, and the Drivers & Utilities cd 'for reinstalling dell inspiron system software'. Since these are all 'reinstallation' cds, can I use these? Is there a website or other link that you can point me to that may have step by step instructions/pictures of this entire process? I am not doing an actual reinstall, but that's what the cds say. I am installing a NEW hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can get the actual HD in the laptop. It's just a matter of what to do next to get Windows XP on it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have the a problem with my Dell Inspiron 6000. I wanted to change my 60 GB HD with a 320 GB Western Digital HD. I knew about the maximum 137 GB that the BIOS could recognoze, but when I booted from the XP CD it looked like it could recognize the entire 320 GB HD, so I thought OK and tried to make only one partition of 320 GB.
After doing this when I start my laptop I only get the blinking cursor in the upper left corner. So I pretty much knew that it was because I partioned my drive to large.
And this is where my REAL problem begins. I am trying to boot from the XP CD to make more partitions under the 137 GB limit. However my computer won't boot from the CD and let me delete the 320 GB partition. I jut get a black screen?! My computer just refuses to boot from the CD and it's also unable to boot from the hard drive (which never worked after the installation).
I had been chatting with the sales rep. in Dell but this is what they want me to purchase [Western Digital

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new battery, thinking my old one which was a refurbished battery just packed up as it was on the way out. When i put new battery in the power meter reads 52%. The battery is not charging however! When the power plug is pulled out the battery light does not come on! The battery is a brand new 9cell, so im sure it is not the battery. I suspect this is why refurbished battery died, or has it? Any thoughts suggestions would be appreciated as im not so savvy at the tech stuff. The computer has been running abit slower recently after upgrading memory 3 months ago to 2gb, so wondering if its caught something! I have avast protection.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook w/ 512 MB Ram running XP sometimes takes up to 15 minutes to begin booting up. For 15 minutes there will be a blinking cursor in the top corner before I see the typical "Dell" then "Microsoft" bootup signs. I ran Adaware and Spybot and Antivirus and this seemed to solve the problem temporarily. Now the problem comes and goes. The computer still has Mcafee that was pre-installed, but with no paid subscription. And Mcafee still sends the "update" popups, even after I though I've disabled them. Could the Mcafee be causing the problems?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs fate would have it, the warranty expired on the 15th of July - The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop - running windows XP. After being left online overnight in a hotel with wireless internet it locked up. Currently we get different results (but all results end in a lock up at the windows screen) - usually it comes up with a screen saying "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" (no new hardware or software was installed prior to lockup) It gives you options to try to start - (I can't remember what all it said - but safe mode was a choice and going back to a prior time was a choice) Usually it is just locked up and you can't click on anything.
Once I did get it to go to safe mode and I tried to do a system restore - It did go through all the motions of doing a system restore - but when rebooted - the same "we apologize" error was there - WHen I can click on a starting option it goes to the windows screen - the blue line runs for a few seconds - then it just locks up. Dell wants a small fortune to help me over the phone. This is my son's college computer. I was thinking he probably picked up a virus when he was online in the hotel. Is that possible? It has let me get into set up by pressing F2 during boot - but I have no idea what to do there (if anything) F12 is another option it gives - but it wont do anything when I push that.
I am working on a Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop. The first problem was a blue screen that said:Quote: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}The registry cannot load the hive (file):systemrootsystem32configsoftware or its log or alternate It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance I fixed that by going into the recovery console and replacing:C:windowssystem32configsoftware C:windowssystem32configsam.bak
C:windowssystem32configsystem.bakC:windowssystem32configdefault.bakC:windowssystem32configsecurity.bakwith the one in the C:windows epair directory

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy Inspiron 6000 laptop, with Windows XP Pro, has an interesting problem:
When I now unplug the AC adaptor from the back of the laptop, the little icon of the plug in the bottom right corner of the taskbar does not switch to a picture of the battery. When I highlight over it, it still says "On AC Power" as though it were still plugged in.
Even weirder, when i click the icon (or go thru control panel), and get to "Power Meter", it says the battery is not present, and that the current power source is AC power. But the battery is definitly present, as i am able to use the laptop under these conditions, and seriously, I dont mean i took the plug out of the wall only. The plug is not connected to the laptop and the above still happens. The only thing that recognizes the difference when the laptop is not plugged in is the little orange LED light just under the right side of the monitor. When it is plugged in, the light turns green.
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
I've just purchased an Inspiron 700M from Dell. They did not include a CD for the operating system. How do I go about obtaining a CD for my WinXP pro SP2.

I have no clue what to do... the only way to bypass this (if you want to call it that) is to hit F2 and go to setup mode. I don't know what to do there. I've had problems before where the computer will only go to one or another BSOD and I've had to completely clear the hard drive and reload everything on it aka start from scratch. Usually my dad does this but first I would like to see if there is any other way to fix it.
