I am using win2k on ntfs file system. My two drives are unaccessable f: and g:when I boot my system. What can be the reason, after third boot all disk was unable to be accessed, when I tried to format my c: through win2k bootable cd. It was shown
c:
d:unformated disk
e:unformated disk
f:unformated disk
g:unformated disk
What is the reason?
I have a Presario 3145A laptop computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and all updates. This has been working perfectlly well until tonight.I have tried a Restore Point but with the same errors coming up.Windows starts OK but after a few minutes, even when I am not using the system, this message appears.The only hardware I had plugged in was a 4gb memory stick which I have used many times. Even without it plugged in, the error appears.
View 14 Replies View Relatedi just bought a new laptop. an HP pavilion if it helps. and having copied over some music from my old desktop to the laptop i tried to move 5gigs of music from one folder on the laptop to another one for ease of sorting. i pressed ctrl x and then ctrl v. it was copied ok as i saw it all in the folder. i closed the folder and opened itunes to add the folder to the library. it seemed to not have any music in it.. so then i tried to reopen the folder i just created with the music that was very definately in it. but it is now empty and i get Access is denied.. the music has dissappeared and doesnt appear on any searches i run. i cant delete/open/move or do anything to the now empty folder.it just coes up with D:music is not accessable. access is denied.the odd thing is that i have another 10 folders all empty and undeletable in another bit of my laptop that i want to delete as they are blocking me copying in an addon for WoW.as you can guess im not exactly a genius at this stuff. and just trying to tidy up my pc has resulted in several hours frustration and lots of swearing.

When I right click Play or double-click my D and/or E drives after inserting a cd or dvd, I get the message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." I have tried several things already including running a thorough cleaning, fixes recommended on the Web including one here and NOTHING works. I cannot burn cds either. Hope someone can help me. I am pretty savvy at following the instructions, even if it includes going into the registry.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

In device manager an exclamation shows and I've been unable to find either an XP or more up to date driver. View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who is having a problem with his laptop.I don't know what kind of laptop he has but the problem is his laptop cannot detect any cd/dvd rom drives. It will not detect the internal cd/dvd rom or an external dvd rom (connected thru usb2.0). It does however recognise the harddrive. He is using Windows 2000 OS. For obvious reasons he cannot put in the Win2000 CD and reinstall drivers (if that is what the problem is). So, does anyone know what could be wrong? I can get more information on the laptop if this would help.

View 2 Replies View Relatedjust recently i was doing my usual bit and both cd/dvd drives droped out, after vigorous testing i found cdrom.sys and its shared componants refused to mount the drives as the service could not start, so i tried updating the drivers - no drivers more suitable than the ones i already have, my oppinion is the files are corrupt but it seems pretty hard to find replacments without individually going through the entire .cab database on the x64 disk, this is something i wish to avoid just incase its not even the problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've this habit of installing softwares on different drives. The OS goes into C drive. Any other softwares that are from trustworthy sources goes into C drive along with the OS. I then install all the games, other softwares from not so trustworthy sources or any new programs I'm trying(like a typing tutor) in D drive. I keep E drive for storage purpose. This is my arrangement for my computer and on all of my friends computers on which I installed the Windows.
I thought it would help keep the OS safe(!) and reinstalling or upgrading would be easy and I don't have to reinstall all the softwares I installed. Am I right in that? What are these dll files. For any software I installed whether in C drive or D drive there seems to be a dll file in the C drive. 1) Does it really matter where I install the softwares(apart from the OS) or does having a seperate drive (usually D drive) for installing 3rd party softwares makes any sense?
2) Do I really have to install all the softwares (installed on D drive) again if I format and reinstall OS in C drive?
My laptop came with one harddisk and a DVD drive. These were initially C and D drives.I later used a partition software and made 3 partitions out of my single harddisk. I meant to have these as C: (original drive), D:, and E: Drives. How can I change the oder/visible sequence of drives as per my requirements?

When I go into my device manager, both drives have a yellow dot with an explantion point. When I try to enable them, I get a message saying windows has located the driver but the hardware is not working. When I look under My Computer, the drives are not even listed under Storage Devices. I've even atempted to do a system restore but not matter what restore point I go back to, Windows says it's unable to restore from that point, choose another. I am far from a PC guru and don't really understand much technical stuff. Can someone help me get up & running again?

I hadn't used the burners for a while, now they aren't working (can read from them but most of the time won't write). In the device managerdriveproperties, Win XP sees them all as SCSI devices. How is this possible? The BIOS has them as IDE primary and secondary drives, so where does the SCSI come in? Could this be part of the burning problem I am having?
