Are there any disadvantages for having smart drive active. I have some concern about hard drive failure and would like as much of a head's up as possible.
As far as I know, I've always turned smart drive off in my bios. But I couldn't give you any good reason why?
My computer won't boot...the master HD had a SMART failure. I've decided to replace my current master HD with a WD 80gig. I also have an identical WD 80gig slave on my system (which I do not want to reformat). Seems simple...however, My slave is the current c: drive. For some reason when i reformatted last time it automatically named my root drive g:...no idea. And to get my computer to recognize my ipod i needed a c: drive so i ended up changing my slave to that via a program in xp. Does anyone know if this will be a real problem when i go to format and partition the new drive? Will it show both HDs without assigned letters? Should I install, format, and setup xp on the new HD without a slave attached and then add the slave later?

The end result is a laptop that now requires a smart card to log in but won't proceed to PIN verification when a card is inserted. It is not connected to the domain that enabled the smart card policy, and I can't log in to attach it to that domain to remove the policy. I'm reminded of a program that can reset a windows password by rewriting the HD sector it resides on, is there something like this for group policies?

I have been told that pda's are slow. My current carrier is Cingular, and I do like the Treo 650 and don't mind paying $350 but the monthly charges are horrendous $45 for an unlimited data connect this is beyond your monthly voice charge. I am looking for alternative and I am willing to change carrier but don't know who to go with for less expensive charges. I am operating Windows XP...I just had a new video card put in it..things don't seem right, as in my font is really small ( i have changed that under "apprearance and themes" and under "view" on my tool bar..but when I type regular it is so small and light..also when I open anything to do an email or a message at a group the body where the message goes is really small as well... especially if I go to an MSN Group. Before the body was larger and I could see everything I typed. Could this be a setting problem that I don't know about or could it be that the video card is not right. They had to order it and it took months to even get it back. I am so at a loss on what to do and aggravated at the same time.

It uses smart cards for verification and all works when I am logged in locally, but when I try to use it from remote computer, it expects that the smart cards are on the remote pc, and doesn't see those that are already on the host. I tried to turn off the smart cards redirection in the group policy, but that didn't help.
View 9 Replies View RelatedTrying to get the Photosmart C6280 drivers to install for the past few days. Whether it's installing from the CD or downloaded drivers, I still get the same message. Right before it starts to install the drivers, it says that some files need to be deleted and that I have to restart. So, I restart, and the installer comes back up, only to tell me to restart again. I got past this when I ran the installer in safe mode, but I was unable to start the Print Spooler to continue the setup.

But for some reason after I re-installed windows and ran it, it now made my slave drive into drive c: and my master drive into drive e:! How do I switch the two? The slave master is set up properly in the BIOS. The large drive is the master and the small drive is the slave. But how do I assign the c:designation to the large drive and the e: designation to the small slave drive.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy office has a number of mapped network drives for each user which, unfortunately, start at drive letter F.Each time a USB device is used on the computer it is also automatically assigned the drive letter F (presuming that C is hard disk and D and E are CD/DVD drives). This has to be manually changed from within Disk Management.Apparently this is as a result of physical drives taking precedent over the mapped network drives.Is there any workaround for this other than moving the mapped drive letters further along in the alphabet? - this is not really a feasible solution at this time.

No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive.When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
This is really a question more than a problem. I'm running a PC with 2 HDs. I am changing the boot drive C: for a larger disk. Now ordinarily I would use a backup program like Ghost or whatever. Now my situation is slightly different in that most of my startup programs are installed on my second HD E:, the C: drive being the boot drive with XP installed.
What my intention is. Is to take out drive E: Then replace that with my new drive. Then I was going to boot in Safe Mode and use the Windows Files & Transfer wizard to copy the C: drive to The new drive. The last thing to do then is swap the C: with the newly installed drive and replace the original E: drive. I hope that all makes sense.
I installed a Serial ATA hard drive. Booted from floppy,partitioned and formatted 120mb HD,with 2 partitions.
Connected my old IDE drive and booted from Norton Ghostdisc, cloned my old drive to the new one. Removed all drives and USB card readers except the new SATA drive. Windows will not fully boot, it halts at the blue Windows intro screen. Restarted Windows, and scandisk ran, but indicated drive letter "H" not "C", so I guess the windows installation is still looking in the original place for it's files, ie. the "C" drive, that's why it won't boot. You cannot change the "System" drive letter from "Computer Management" within XP, and I cannot get into Windows anyway. Is there a "work around" for this, other than a clean install? Even then, is it still going to be drive "H"? And that means another Windows activation. How many goes do you get for activation? I tried a windows repair installation, and reactivation (wasted). Windows then worked, sort of. Lots of things were missing and programs unuseable,as they were looking for their files on "C": so I went back to square 1, put my old drive back in for the moment
I had to reinstall XP because of spyware issues. I saved important data on my slave drive. I reinstalled XP. Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi screwed up my registry, and of all things it was the keyboard driver or something, so theres no hope of fixing it on my computer. ive got the drive hooked up as the slave on a different computer, but i cant figure out how to edit the registry on my drive rather than the primary drive. is there any editors that will open it from a file? any way of decompiling it? theres got to be some way to edit it. also, they are both xp.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever I open up My Computer and browse Local C drive, it takes at least 10 seconds to open up a single folder. I did chkdsk /f /r thing and found no errors on my C drive. I am also possitive that my PC is malware free.
