Computer Only Working In Safe Mode

Feb 20, 2009

When I try to boot up Windows XP, when its at the windows loading screen with the Windows logo, the bar under it the blue thing will move for about 6 or 7 times and then just freeze and stop. Then I restart the computer and choose to boot in safe mode which is the only mode that works. This is the second time this has happened, the first time it happened through safe mode I got the Windows Xp.iso image from microsoft.com, and then used a product key locator to find it on my pc because I do not have the windows xp boot discs but my original copy of XP is legit.

BSOD When Booting To Safe Mode, Not Normal Mode?

I've got a Dell Dimension 4550 running windows XP w/ SP2 and ALL the latest patches here in my shop, and I've got the weirdest problem. I wanna sweep it clean of viruses and spyware, but can't boot to safe mode. It boots completely fine in normal mode, no errors or anything. The BSOD I get is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Not Booting Up Normally Or Safe Mode

Aug 20, 2008

I'm having a crisis, my computer crashed...it would not boot up, I get the "Windows did not start successfully" and asked to choose to start windows. If I choose start normally, it just restarts and back to the same screen, none of the safe modes work, the drivers load, black screen, and it just stays like that.

My computer was fine a few days back, then one day I get a blue screen with writing about some error, then something about a win2k.sys and now poof! Can it be saved? I'm a student and all of my work is on that harddrive. I will appreciate the help/advice anyone has to offer.

BSOD Even When Booting In Safe Mode

Apr 5, 2010

Don't know what found it's way into my PC last night but I was suddenly hit with the BSOD showing the following error:

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x87AB43B2, 0xF79AD270, 0xF79ACF6C)

Normal reboot results in the same screen and trying to boot up into sfae mode just returns me to the setup (F8) screen. So, I figured on a repair for which I've managed to get hold of an XP disc from my mother of all people.

So far I have, based on what I have found from searching the net, via the Recovery Console on the disc I have:

run chkdsk /r
followed by a reboot - no change
COPY D:i386NTLDR C:
COPY D:i386NTDETECT.COM C:
FIXBOOT
followed by a reboot - no change

FIXMBR (yes to proceed)
followed by a reboot -- no change

bootcfg /rebuild
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL
/Fastdetect

Those procedures sounded pretty safe to me and I don't think I've damaged my PC any further but ...

BSOD Booting Into Safe Mode

Jan 4, 2009

I have a strange problem which I can't seem to rectify, I've searched around but can't find a solution. I have a Dell Demension 8400, it has 1GB RAM installed, an 80GB C: drive and I have a 250GB external USB drive (which I use for back-up, I store pictures music etc there) and I'm running Windows XP PRO with SP3+ all fixes installed.

he problem is I can NOT boot info safe mode. (I can boot normally though no problem). When I tap F8 key, I get the safe mode choices just fine (just safe mode or safe mode with networking etc) when I make a choice it starts to load then I get a BSOD with the following message/information

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to the computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen (it's NOT it happens every safe mode boot no matter if I choose just safe mode or save mode with networking etc.)restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for Viruses on your computer (I do always have Avira's AntiVir running and fully updated, I ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and spybot search & destroy). Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers (no new hard drives or controllers). Check your hard drive to make sure it is configured and terminated (I assume it's working I can boot into windows fine normally just NOT in safe mode). Run CHKDSK /F (I did that no problems detected) to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. (the problem of course still exists)

Technical information:

***Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF7C7B524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"
I'm not 100% sure what to do, I really don't want to format & reinstall Windows from scratch because I have so many "things" which I use alot that I'd not want to try to replace.

Using safe mode isn't 100% essential, but there have been times in the past I needed it to remove a malware that could not be removed in normal mode.

After Restore System Is Booting Only In Safe Mode

May 21, 2006

Basically the original problem was a non functioning WinXP OS that led to using the system restore disc on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...dont-work.html

Now the system will only boot in safe mode. So far I've done the restore several times. Gone into msconfig, checked Hide Microsoft services and disabled the rest, unchecked load startup items and tried a Diagnostic Startup. Device Manager looks fine, but I tried disabling items without change. It looks like the Restore Disc is the right one for the system.

I have not installed any software. I have replaced my cd-rom burner and it is working properly. Any ideas on how a I may access "Safe Mode"??
I am running 2000 pro. Also is there a way I can see what the "Administrative Password" on Win 2000 pro.?
I set up a friends computer with 2000 and I didn't enter a password. Apparently, someone else has entered one but can not remember it, thus their computer is useless without the password.

Cannot Boot Pro - Safe Mode - Black Screen With Working Cursor

Dec 15, 2004

I cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.

Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.

Can't Boot Into Safe Mode / Stop Error Screen

Jun 15, 2005

In trying to get rid of some adware, I attempted to boot my computer (P4 2.8 GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, Windows XP SP2) in safe mode. When I selected "Safe Mode with Networking", I was brought to a blue screen called a "STOP ERROR SCREEN" - basically it said that it had to stop the booting up of the computer or the computer might be harmed. It suggested removing any recently installed hardware and disabling BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. So I rebooted and got into windows normally just fine.

Then I decided to try just regular Safe Mode (without networking) - when I selected that option, the computer started to do it, then rebooted and prompted me if I wanted to boot into Windows normally or safe mode, etc...I tried Safe Mode again - same thing, a reboot. I tried Safe Mode with Networking again - and I got the blue Stop Error Screen again.

This is pretty strange (at least I've never seen it) and I'd really like to be able to boot into safe mode.

Stop Error Screen Won't Start Even In Safe Mode

Nov 14, 2007

The problem is on my buddies pc. It uses Windows XP Professional. I have it setup next to this pc I'm currently using. First I get this screen:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent harware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight your choice.
Any choice I highlight brings this screen:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is indentified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with the hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
