View 8 RepliesI've got a Dell Dimension 4550 running windows XP w/ SP2 and ALL the latest patches here in my shop, and I've got the weirdest problem. I wanna sweep it clean of viruses and spyware, but can't boot to safe mode. It boots completely fine in normal mode, no errors or anything. The BSOD I get is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT _LESS_OR_EQUAL 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a crisis, my computer crashed...it would not boot up, I get the "Windows did not start successfully" and asked to choose to start windows. If I choose start normally, it just restarts and back to the same screen, none of the safe modes work, the drivers load, black screen, and it just stays like that.
My computer was fine a few days back, then one day I get a blue screen with writing about some error, then something about a win2k.sys and now poof! Can it be saved? I'm a student and all of my work is on that harddrive. I will appreciate the help/advice anyone has to offer.
I am in a desktop administration class and I have been given a question I can't seem to find an answer for.PC appears to be booting in Safe Mode, however it is not. What is the likely problem?
View 5 Replies View RelatedDon't know what found it's way into my PC last night but I was suddenly hit with the BSOD showing the following error:
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x87AB43B2, 0xF79AD270, 0xF79ACF6C)
Normal reboot results in the same screen and trying to boot up into sfae mode just returns me to the setup (F8) screen. So, I figured on a repair for which I've managed to get hold of an XP disc from my mother of all people.
So far I have, based on what I have found from searching the net, via the Recovery Console on the disc I have:
run chkdsk /r
followed by a reboot - no change
COPY D:i386NTLDR C:
COPY D:i386NTDETECT.COM C:
FIXBOOT
followed by a reboot - no change
FIXMBR (yes to proceed)
followed by a reboot -- no change
bootcfg /rebuild
WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL
/Fastdetect
Those procedures sounded pretty safe to me and I don't think I've damaged my PC any further but ...
I have a strange problem which I can't seem to rectify, I've searched around but can't find a solution. I have a Dell Demension 8400, it has 1GB RAM installed, an 80GB C: drive and I have a 250GB external USB drive (which I use for back-up, I store pictures music etc there) and I'm running Windows XP PRO with SP3+ all fixes installed.
he problem is I can NOT boot info safe mode. (I can boot normally though no problem). When I tap F8 key, I get the safe mode choices just fine (just safe mode or safe mode with networking etc) when I make a choice it starts to load then I get a BSOD with the following message/information
A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to the computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen (it's NOT it happens every safe mode boot no matter if I choose just safe mode or save mode with networking etc.)restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for Viruses on your computer (I do always have Avira's AntiVir running and fully updated, I ran Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and spybot search & destroy). Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers (no new hard drives or controllers). Check your hard drive to make sure it is configured and terminated (I assume it's working I can boot into windows fine normally just NOT in safe mode). Run CHKDSK /F (I did that no problems detected) to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. (the problem of course still exists)

I'm not 100% sure what to do, I really don't want to format & reinstall Windows from scratch because I have so many "things" which I use alot that I'd not want to try to replace.
Using safe mode isn't 100% essential, but there have been times in the past I needed it to remove a malware that could not be removed in normal mode.
My laptop runs Win XP Pro SP3. Since yesterday, the normal boot does not succeed - but safe mode (with and without networking) are working. I know I am supposed to diagnose the cause in the safe mode, but do not have a clue what the next step ought to be
View 14 Replies View RelatedI attempted to re-format NTFS and re-install Windows XP Home Ed to get rid of a virus on a PC.I made the bonehead mistake of beginning this re-install while I had the computer in Safe Mode (I got into safe mode to save off data files).I went through the XP re-install, booting from the CD and did the re-format through the recovery console. Now I get an error message that says "Windows cannot run setup in Safe Mode. Windows will restart". I click OK and the system reboots. When the BIOS loads, I can get into the Advanced Options menu, I select boot normally but the PC still seems to boot in Safe Mode and I get the error message again.I'm stuck in this cycle because I can't get out of Safe Mode and Windows can't complete the install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've read several threads and have not gotten a full answer that works. My computer was infected with the Advanced Virus Removal trojan. All the forums I read were not helpful as it had mutated and would not allow access to regedit or task manager. My virus/spyware support said to go under msconfig and have in safe boot mode under boot.ini. Well my system rebooted and would go to blue screen saying system was infected and would stop. This would happen each time. I was told to use my startup cd. I did and chose to repair the OS. When it would reboot the screen would say safe mode in the corners and then a dialog box appears saying Windows setup cannot be run in safe mode. Tried going under F8 and tried every option with the same.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've read some other posts with this problem, but I haven't seen a solution that will work for me. I set my xp to safeboot through msconfig per instructions from symantec for spyware removal. It never booted in safemode, just was stuck in a loop.I decided to try to boot from the cd. It was going okay as a repair until it told me it was going to restart and finish setup. When it restarted it said setup cannot run in safe mode.I can't reinstall (at least I don't think so) because everytime you start it up it says setup is restarting..... and then you get the error message again.
View 23 Replies View RelatedBasically the original problem was a non functioning WinXP OS that led to using the system restore disc on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...dont-work.html
Now the system will only boot in safe mode. So far I've done the restore several times. Gone into msconfig, checked Hide Microsoft services and disabled the rest, unchecked load startup items and tried a Diagnostic Startup. Device Manager looks fine, but I tried disabling items without change. It looks like the Restore Disc is the right one for the system.
i was trying to get into safemode so i could run an antivirus scan, problem is whenever i tried going in safemode the blue screen would pop up and computer would restart. now for some dumb reason i thought maybe i could get in safemode if i used msconfig and selected safe mode from the boot menu. so the computer restarted and now it boots in safemode but the blue screen and restart happen everytime now. ive tried "start windows normally" but that boots in safemode. ive tried "last known good config" and that too boots in safemode. so now im stuck
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried booting into "Safe Mode" to defrag my computer. Before it goes into "Safe Mode" I get a blue screen stating that "I must remove improperly installed software to proceed". I have not installed any software. I have replaced my cd-rom burner and it is working properly. Any ideas on how a I may access "Safe Mode"??
I am running 2000 pro. Also is there a way I can see what the "Administrative Password" on Win 2000 pro.?
I set up a friends computer with 2000 and I didn't enter a password. Apparently, someone else has entered one but can not remember it, thus their computer is useless without the password.
Blue Screen Reads: BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO. STOP: 0x00000074. Can't boot into safe mode, computer simply reboots instantly and you can see the blue screen for a split second when you select that option or any other option. The only way to see the blue screen is to let the timer time out on the selection of windows did not start properly.Do not have the choice of repair either.

I have a IBM Thinkpad that was setup for use on a domain. I know I have a trojan that has affected my ability to start my computer normally. After I enter in my username and password I let it sit for over eight hours today but I never came to the desktop. I could move the cursor but I never was able to access the desktop
When I tried to access safe mode I don't know any of the local user names or passwords. I also don't know the admin password. What options do I have to access safe mode somehow clear this trojan? I was told I had a trojan before I restarted my computer
In trying to get rid of some adware, I attempted to boot my computer (P4 2.8 GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, Windows XP SP2) in safe mode. When I selected "Safe Mode with Networking", I was brought to a blue screen called a "STOP ERROR SCREEN" - basically it said that it had to stop the booting up of the computer or the computer might be harmed. It suggested removing any recently installed hardware and disabling BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. So I rebooted and got into windows normally just fine.
Then I decided to try just regular Safe Mode (without networking) - when I selected that option, the computer started to do it, then rebooted and prompted me if I wanted to boot into Windows normally or safe mode, etc...I tried Safe Mode again - same thing, a reboot. I tried Safe Mode with Networking again - and I got the blue Stop Error Screen again.
This is pretty strange (at least I've never seen it) and I'd really like to be able to boot into safe mode.
The problem is on my buddies pc. It uses Windows XP Professional. I have it setup next to this pc I'm currently using. First I get this screen:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent harware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight your choice.
Any choice I highlight brings this screen:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is indentified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with the hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

View 11 Replies View Relatedthis is the best way I know to explain all of this. I am running a 3 yr old Gateway with Windows xp and Sp 1 & 2. I have always stayed up to date with my Windows updates deleting cookies, defrags and so on. I am running Avast anti virus and Armor 2 Net firewall. I have noticed over a period of about a mth that my system has been getting pretty slow to boot up and load up web pages. Now I am having to manually start my PC and I have to do it in safe mode F8 and click on debugging mode. If I don't do it this way then everything loads up and then my PC just turns itself off. I have PC doctor and I have done a complete diagnostic test and I have gone to antivirus.com and did a virus scan there as well as with my Avast. I am thinking that I may have to totally take everything out and reinstall everything back in. The only thing is -is that I don't know what to type in to get the whole thing going. Also I have been getting a message but only sometimes that says RTL cannot locate HPOIPMO7.exe (HPOIMO7.exe) I haven't a clue what this is. Might it have anything to do with what is going on. I don't mean to write a book here but there is one other thing, the other day I had a window pop up that said that windows needed me to reinstall my xp software and when I tried it said that the version that I was already running was newer than the cd software I was trying to install and wouldn't accept it.

View 2 Replies View Relatedbut i think i posted this in the other area before. i had some bugs i couldn't delete in normal mode, so im like oh kay, easy, go in safe and delete the suckers. i restart my computer and f8, and try to go into safe mode, said something about your computer was shut down incorrectly or power lost and some files are missing now.
so im like, ummmmmmmmmmm... how do i get round this. so, i restarted my computer and put it in to the (Last Known Good Configuration), i know, i went to Run>msconfig>Boot.ini>tick /SAFEBOOT and restart my computer, not knowing this was one of the biggest mistakes i've ever done. it starts and it runs a little big and boooom!!! blue screen pops up and this is what it says, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damange to your computer....
An infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:WindowsSystem32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:oot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI went into MSCONFIG and checked the box to go into safe mode so i could run some virus scans and adware scans and stuff like that. Now when it gets to the desktop it has the window that says Loading Windows and then after like 2-3 min. it says password is incorrect and that i should retype it and becarefull of caps lock and stuff like that. The thing is don't have a password. It does this when i boot normally too but it lets me hit ok and hit Cancel without a password entered.
All of a sudden it tries logging me in automatically when I start up but the thing is i dont need to log in. So I try to go back into normal mode and Ican't. I hit F8 during startup and went to the Boot Normally option but it still does to safe mode. What do I do? How do I log on or how do I get rid of this password thing? One more thing, the window that tells me the password is wrong has an OK box but theres no mouse on the screen for me to click it and I can't use the keyboard to select it.
I've got a problem booting Windows XP in safe mode though it works wll in normal mode. I press on f8 at the begining, I do get the menu where I chose the option "safe mode" and then it seems to boot up but after a few seconds all I get is a black screnn and a blinking cursor on the top left (this lasts for more then 15 mins when I get fed up and try again) What can I do?
